I taught Thai for decades including to many foreign adults.
For me personally I realized from the get go that focusing on tones and accuracy of pronunciation was key. But it took me years of listening to train myself in truly understanding the sound I was hearing and how to physically produce it.
As a Thai teacher I figured that most people could not and would not have the time to be able to do this so I concentrated on the general cadence of sentences to help them speak with relative clarity.
For others who couldn't trust their ears but who had more time to devote to learning Thai I advised learning written Thai and especially its rules. The learning of the spelling of a word thus became a help in its pronunciation. The learner could - with the help of a native speaker - hear its pronunciation then figure out how words of a similar tonal value would sound. I always said that the around a dozen central rules or items of knowledge for figuring out Thai tones were the most important things to learn as a gateway for good pronunciation for people from a non-tonal language background.
Incidentally those commenting on วนไปวนมา would see a version of that in today's story on TV about sharks "circling" at an island in Krabi.

Look on the bright side. At least you now have a clean record.

So now it has officially collapsed and the following were given on the BBC as reasons:
"Thomas Cook has blamed a series of issues for its problems including political unrest in holiday destinations such as Turkey, last summer's prolonged heatwave and customers delaying booking holidays because of Brexit".
Great how they manage to blame Brexit and Turkey (and not a word on the value of the pound abroad).
But they need to look on the bright side - with global warming the UK is hotting up nicely, wine from vines in Cornwall (the new Riviera) is gaining recognition and soon it will be completely unnecessary for any Brits to leave their homeland for holidays.
How the world will miss the lager louts...

Move it somewhere near Bognor Regis and take Nana Plaza and Thermaes with it. Would save a lot of people an airfare
Finally a post that makes sense.
And with Viagra now available at Boots, day trips could be organised for the folks in Worthing.

One of their founders, I believe, was Captain Cook who discovered Tahiti.
He also discovered your homeland, contrary to Spanish claims.
I got my history degree on Facebook, want one?

Thomas Cook...whose exchange booths (for want of a better word) in the UK offered tourists about six baht under the proper rate.
Good riddance to thieves.

Frankly, I was just as shocked by the black women in the picture who put on white make-up.
Disgraceful.

In Bangkok earlier this week we had the most spectacular electrical storm seen in the city for a very long time. The kids were in awe when they weren't hiding under their covers. Lovely to live high up and experience the flashes, bangs and torrential rain without a care in the world!
Not quite so nice in Pattaya and Ubon I gather.

Concerned about the state of the pork at my local supermarket I called the Swine Fever hotline.
But all I got was a lot of crackling.

Having seen 8 people from that large triangular country openly urinating group style in the centre of Soi 4 I would hazard a guess that certain factors are leading to a decrease in Pattaya,s charm. While this type of behaviour may be acceptable in certain countries, notably India and Pakistan, Europeans tend to be slightly more up-market and avoid such places ????
Oh come now, sir. Britain is hardly large and I would dispute the fact that it is even vaguely triangular.

The orange cones all floated away, the water covered the drain holes and some poor guy turning into a side Soi drove straight down a huge hole. Took half a dozen people to get him and his bike out. Never ride anywhere in the rain since.
A similar thing happened to me about 23 years ago in Soi Lasalle that they were digging up. On my Honda Rebel me and first daughter, then aged about six, started being drawn into a quite ample hole during the school run to BPS. People rushed to successfully grab her from my outstretched arms as I sunk beneath the sandy mire.
I lived.

I went to England when they won the league cup in 2008 when I was 46. But I never got a ticket....

I'm only 58 so not sure I am allowed to comment. I do worry about one thing in relation to getting old - that I'll conk out before Spurs win the EPL.
On a slightly more serious note I think that having the attention and needs of very young children around me means that I have few times to dwell. I honestly obsessed about getting old far more when I was in my twenties than I do now and I don't think that is set to change in my sixties or seventies. Also I have passed through medical emergencies in which I believed that I was extremely unlikely to see even 50 years of age; this means that now nearing 60 I am thankful for every day I wake up even if my back hurts or my three year old needs chasing around the pool table. Having a cerebral interest - worldwide tournament Scrabble and the practice regimen needed to retain a reasonably high world ranking - also keeps the mental acuity quite finely tuned. Work is also a big factor for me and it is inconceivable that I would consider giving up writing for a living, ever.
Positive thinking and a very active life, especially mentally, are key components for me and will continue. Maintaining a healthy diet and following the advice of my doctor (a Thai who is a Man City supporter) are also important. He thinks I have a fair chance of seeing Harry lift the EPL trophy...

You are so much against plastic and then you buy 6 Kraft cheese slices. Every single slice is packed in plastic and in addition all of them are packed in plastic. Are you sure that you are really against plastic waste?
You are right. The amount of plastic waste that we take home when we are patting ourselves on the back is appalling. We are forced into a corner with much of it and we need the regulators to help and the producers to be obliged to follow suit. As I said in the OP, much more needs to be done.

I agree with you. If I ever run out of vegemite, then I have to start on the marmite. A reminder to get back to the store.....it's one of the few food items I would be prepared to be fleeced over!

It's far better to take a deep breath and relax. It's good for one's health and may even make you appear less of a fool when it comes to interpreting the vagaries of Thai ways. This columnist has found that the less I overreact the better I feel and ultimately the more correct I might turn out to be in the long run.
It's funny, I was just rereading this after a considerable (and private) family event occurred last night. I think I overreacted and now my own words have reminded me not to be such a stupid idiot, smell the roses and wait until things pan out.
Learning never stops.
