More and more there are stories about Farngas having their house broken into while they sleep. They wake up and never remember hearing a thing. I have heard about this in the the Chalong/Rawai/Nai Harn area. I hear stories about things even being taken from the bedside table.

Although I dont know full detalis I know of one farang couple it happened to so it is not like an "inside job" carried out by some one night stand.

How is this possible? Some people speculate that some kind of gas is used but this sounds awfully sophisticated .......

Could it be that the theives wait to see if people have been drinking heavily?

Do I really have to worry at night? I already drilled all the crosses out of the screws on the bars of my window since I am surrounded by jungle and not to far away many aluminum chateus (sp?)

I am visiting BKK in October this year for 15 nights and have only the accomodation left to sort out.

I lived there for 6 months in 2004/5 and have decided I want to stay on Sukhumvit.

I cannot recount how many hotel search engines and hotel web sites I have visited (including thai vias') and my head is spinning! I have read loads of Trip Advisor reviews (where do these people come from??) and in the end I am not really any nearer to deciding.

My budget is max 2000 bht a night (inc tax and VAT). Must haves are Pool, good room with in room safe and preferrably guest friendly and near sky train or the metro

So my request is.... whcih hotels would you guys recommend?

If i had a bigger budget though, after all my research I Think Majestic looks good. And asiarooms had the best rates. I too checked out the thai visa room booking site but they didnt have to 2 hotels im debating or I would of happily booked through them.............

You need a letter from your employer to get the Non Immigrant visa, and possibly about an inch more of paperwork.

Typically you come to Thailand and get the paper work and do a visa run. Get used to VIsa runs. ITs a part of lie here for many of us.

So once you arrive you get your paper work fly to malaysia for about $40 one way. go to the embassy, drop it all off and then pick it up the next day (check for malysian and thai holidays though). then come back with the non immigrant and then the school can apply for the actual workpermit, assuming they will give you one as is not always the case, and the you must leave again in 90's for the New non-imm visa, ideally for a long time.

YOu dont have to plan your trip to LAOS!

It may have been better to have a TOURIST visa which give you 60 days but if you are going to start working right away then you have 30 days to leave anyways so it can be a waste too.

YOu can also mail your visa to the Thai consulate if you are sitll in america and not have to physically go to LA.

YOu should get used to checking eveyrthing YOURSELF. BUt stop panicking or you will never survive here! People dont leave Thailand saying how effecient the Thais were.. more like friendly but not effecient.

Just dont lie, at least not to paypal or ebay. If you try to set up your paypal account while in Thailand, using your overseas mail and phone number and bank account you will get caught. Because they will call to verify I think. my friend tried to do it and it got all very complicated.

However once in Thailand I CAN access my paypal account but dont remember how i got it all cleared.

With Ebay you can register as being in Thailand or change your addres sto THailand. HOWever if you are registerd overseas and start logging on from Thailand then you will have a problem.

I recommend NOT SELLING counterfeit stuff. Seems like there are a lot of German Ebay websites with fake stuff.

It just gives everybody selling from Thailand a bad name. I think anyone selling from Indonesia has problems because of this, like Ebay warns the buyers.

I want to use my rented house as an address/office.

However my landlords have told me I can NOT use my house because they dont want the tax office to know they have the houses. (I think the word is encroachment) but i try not to ask to many questions. they dont want to pay tax. So now ????

I must move unless there is another option? My accountant could have registerd the business to her address but now that i want the work permit it must be registered to an office where I have my sign up and have..an office.

I think I will just have to move....... I like the house but not dealing with shady people.........

I did hear that a more questionable accountant can set it up from his office?

HI I am a single western female who has lived here for 5 years. Thailand is fine, thailand is safe. Mabye just stay in Bangkok and book a trip from there. Khao Sarn road is THE Backpacker headquarters. you can book a trip from there and have instant friends on the journey there. Bring a backpack though and not a suitcase .

Go to the lonelyplanet.com website, go to the "thorntree" discussion forum on Thailand. Thailand is proably one of the safest places to travel. Be street smart and saavy, and you should be fine.

briley, Thank you so very much! I was having my own problems at work sending out and i dont know what the problem was, and wont go into the boring details but i changed my out going smtp to gmail using the authentication from my gmail account and its all working.

Ill also mention it to my friend that maybe this is why some people are not receive her emails.

I didnt realize I could send out going through and smtp that had nothing to do with the ISP i was using for my email . oh its all sort of comfusing for me.........

My friend bought a lap top and has CAT internet adsl at home but cant figure out what her SMTP Settings are.

I called Cat and of course got no where. they wanted to know the phone number which seemed irrelovent.

I have IP Star and have had it for about 3 or 4 months now. Very happy with it. There were a few bugs in the begning, but I called them up and all seems to be working fine. If its cloudy it doestn work. A few times it has been down and I have emailed them and they have called me back!! Amazing really.

My download speads are fine as well. Ill see how i feel at the end of the low season with lots of rain.

It does work sometimes during bad weather, i guess it just depends on the extent of it.

However people with ADSL seem to complain a lot aobut the customer service. Today i have no complaints! ANd i use P2p a lot, downloading like crazy!

They provide free dial up hours as well for the times when you cant connect.
