  1. No free wifi in maccas in Europe?
Welcome back JJ. Perfect timing not to be nominated. Sit back and think about what could have been.

Seems like I needed a new sim for every country visited

I like your thinking Sipi..save a baht where u can.

Good to be back among the penny saving crowd

    sent from my iphone7

  2.
Whatever JJ, you are splitting hairs. Cheap skate, Cheap Farangs, Cheap Foreigners, Tight Wad, Cheap Ass...All one in the same for the context of your post. As said, most of them are heard in a very specific segment of Thailand. You do not hear it outside that. At least I have not heard it.  Think about it JJ, How would they know the guy is "Cheap" if they had nothing to compare it too.

But to your OP, the impression is all foreigners here in Thailand are loaded thus when they do not cough out money they can be frowned upon and called  "Cheap Farangs" as you put it. Its a stigma that has existed for years. As for "pennywise" women, Being many have had little for most of their life and had to scrape by, they are always going to be "Bahtwise" thus they are looked at as very frugal and spending conscience.

Any cheap guy stands out after knowing them for short periods...there are few cultural boundaries that hide that.
No matter what background u are from it will be apparent after a few meals or shopping trips when they complain about 10 baht water.

But your focus is on what thai women say about farang guys and that is not my focus.
My focus is on what other farangs say about and the negative view they have of cheapass farangs.. yet if a thai woman is equally frugal, they are praised for saving a baht....

You are kidding right?  I have seen Cheap Charlie used on this site no less than 50 times.  It's a common term and seems to be  used in the bar girl circles as stated.  I personally have never heard it used in public.  Just as read.

But it's all the same to me a tightwad, Cheap ass, Cheap skate, etc.

But I think outside that "Segment" Thais are not sitting around talking about foreigners like many believe they are.  Again. It's all a product of one's environment.

The term as used on this thread JAFO...used on this thread...
  4.
But it is a slightly derogatory term used by people who want you to spend money with them being the beneficiary .
If you were out shopping with a Thai lady and you were looking to buy yourself a gold chain, for example , and you said "Silver ones are cheaper , so I may get a silver one instead of a gold one"
Would She say "Dont be such a Cheapskate, buy yourself a gold one"?
    No She wouldnt .
On the other hand, :If you were buying her a gold chain and you suggested that it would be cheaper to get a silver one.....................out come the derogatory terms

It is usually a derogatory term. It isn't limited to those wanting u to spend money or solely thai women talking about farang guys...
Calling another expat tight or a cheapass is used as a negative term in describing them...that really was the thrust of my OP
  5.
There is currently another thread with "Cheap Charlie" in the title , which has a similar content to this thread , this thread also has "Cheap ferang" in the title, which has the same meaning as "Cheap Charlie" , so, we are all talking about the same thing, just using slightly different terminology

The title said cheap ass originally ...but was edited by admin..
The phrases refer to the same type of frugal people but it's different terminology used by different people...as u point out.

My point is....cheap ass and cheapskate is widely used terminology...not limit3d to bars.
  6.

^^^Exactly. Just a normal good old fashion relationship.

I think this Cheap Charlie, ATM talk is "Bar Girl" lingo along with Teerak and a host of other words that have hit TV. If you have chosen that lifestyle one shouldn't expect too much and it is likely Thais are talking about you in that light. Outside of that, many of us go about our day and if my hunch is correct Thais are not talking about them as much as they think they are. At least where I am from.

It certainly is : Generally used by bargirls if you dont buy them a ladys drink in a bar

The word cheap charlie might be bar girl language...but u are the only two using that terminology here. It isn't me tinned in my OP.

Calling someone a 'cheap ass or 'cheapskate' or 'tight' or 'kee neow' is common everyday phrase usage
  7. Spot on, but one is an outside perspective looking at you, and the other is your perspective looking at your partner.
I don't think these perceptions are any different in any country. Generosity is usually a valued trait, as is being a frugal wife. I think what is more important is having a similar attitude to money as your partner. If one is tight and one spends freely there will be friction, especially if she is the one spending your money freely.

Interesting observation about the 2 different perspectives...and quite right
  8.

    I find this anomaly interesting

Expats who are careful with their spending are disparagingly referred to as being a ‘cheap ass’ or ‘tight’ with their money; using the term about another is viewing them unfavorably

Yet, when speaking of Thai partners, their exact same carefulness with money is seen as a massively positive trait; something to proudly tell others about.

Why the difference in attitudes when it comes to gender?

Are farang guys expected to be more free spending and reckless with their spending?

Both the man and woman are showing caution with their spending so why is one derided and one celebrated?

  9. Come on guys, can't you see that this guy is just an adolescent troll.

He's had 500 posts on here since July...most being deliberate stupid questions.

So let's lets just ignore him, and hope he doesn't grow up to be a teacher.

What do u have against teachers?
  10. Seriously? You would go around stealing religious items from a Buddhist Temple? What sort of moron are you? Not only is that illegal, but incredibly disrespectful. Damaged Buddhas are regularly returned to temples by Thai people, never thrown out. I've even carried a damaged image back to Thailand to be safely enshrined in a Wat in Chiang Mai. I hope the police are onto you and I hope the monks give you a sound thrashing if caught! I'd even join in! Stay in your own country and go desecrate a church and see how far you get!

    Calm down dude!

I only asked about the figurines...i didnt say i was taking a sack to rake them up
  11. When your out Mr Green is it OK if I pop round to your gaff and start a collection of JJGreen objects. I'm sure it will be ok with you as you see it as ok to collect other people's stuff.

If i leave anything outside and away from my property for a period of months you are welcome to take what u want
  12. Upon reflection, I  support this person's  desire to collect these graven images, false gods and idols. They should be collected and disposed of.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Good advice to follow. Idol worship  is so Rome and Greece circa 500 BC.

Should we meet up and forage together?
  13. Perhaps he's talking about all the little animal carvings that are often left at Thai temples and spirit houses outside important places, like hospitals.

Yes those ones...but the spirit houses are everywhere. Sides of roads...on trees..next to buildings...in vacant lots
  14.

Must be a Brit or Aussie, no self respecting American would be caught dead wearing socks with sandle's

    From wiki...

Socks and sandals is a regular Pacific Northwest phenomenon.[14][15][16] Seattle based insurance company PEMCO used the "Sandals & Socks Guy" character as part of a 2007 advertising campaign that portrayed this as a typically Pacific Northwest fashion.[17][18] The Daily Dot highlighted "sandals and socks" as a term entered into a web search engine more often by Washingtonians than residents of any other state.[19]
  15. That's a great idea start going round to shrines and begin helping yourself to some of the "older/rarer" looking figurines. No need to be sneaky about it I'm sure it won't be a problem.  Please do come back and let us know how you get on.

    Are u a collector?
  16. Was thinking of starting up a collection of shrine figurines.

I’ve seen some quirky figurines at shrines, often spilling over onto pathways or just laying abandoned on the ground next to the shrine

Is there a secondhand market for them?

Any figurines that are collector items?

Can I just help myself to some older/rarer looking ones? Surely the shrines are cleaned out regularly of them anyway

Are there shops selling only new shrine figurines? Where are they?
