  1. If the nest is not too close to your house, children or anything of value, maybe you could try my solution. After 100 bites and many overrated products, I did the following.

I had some paint thinners handy so I poured a little down the tunnels they build. I lit it after a few minutes while it penetrated and it burned for maybe 10 minutes. It must have reached them all as no sign of them since.

I guess any flamable spirit would work.

Papaya fruits rapidly, though it has a comparatively weak rooting system, so be careful where you plant them, they can get washed away at this time of year.

Guava, as you already know, fruits quickly. Cover the developing fruit on the tree in either paper or plastic bags to keep the insects off.

In addition to the two above, we commercially grow dragon fruit, banana, mulberries and lemons all in poor stoney fast draining soil. Soil which I have gradually improved over the years with a steady supply of cow manure from a nearby dairy farm but it's a lifetime's work, I suspect.

For our own consumption, we also grow mango, limes, blackberries (yes, seriously), sour sop, melon and, my pet project at the moment, lychee (I have to see how this pans out).

Great tip about the guava as the missus will soon have more than 20 trees and she has already sold some but would attract more customers if they looked nicer. Shame we can't buy more at the same price we found at a casual market a few months back.

Currently we are using only this half Rai which is our actual backyard as our American friends call it, but we have access to much more as our family own another Rai or 2 which they aren't using.

    So, great info from everyone.

Any more will go into the draw to decide which way to proceed.

Santol trees, limes, mangoes, starfruit, jackfruit, coconut, longan, tamarind, Antidesma puncticulatum, among the many that thrive in Udon.  Jackfruit planted next to the house brings good juju.  I'd stay away from things like durian....I'm not sure they'd do well without lots of loving care.

Avacadoes are gaining in popularity around here.....but you might have to settle for strains that fit the climate.

    Thanks for the heads up

Longans should grow well there. I had good success growing a Longan tree in tropical Australia. Rambutans grew well as well but they prefer a cooler climate, preferably elevated. Longans are more hardy and will fruit in 3 or 4 years.

Grafted Mangoes will fruit in 3 years. Never plant mangoes from seed.

And custard apples, and 5 corners (star fruit). And cashews. All fast fruiting.

We inherited one unhealthy custard apple which may be ripped out and burnt. Will be replaced with 6 healthy ones. Longans were popular as a large crop at our last place so we'll maybe also try those. Mangoes are plentiful in most gardens. Star fruit are grown but few are picked with lots on the floor cashews I never considered as they need a lot of processing. That said I'll certainly put one in to try.

    Thanks for the input.

  5. I realise this subject has been covered a few times but I'm hoping for any up to date and current experiences.

We have recently reclaimed about a half rai of land rear of the house in Isaan. This has been

thoroughly cleared and topped up with sandy rice paddy soil. We have plenty of water and full sunshine. In the past few months we've had some decent success with planting flowering trees on the same size land front of the house. Some young trees were bought via mail order and very successful others were from local garden centres. The wife also bought 8 guava trees which are already producing dozens of fruit.

Now she wants to plant a lot more fruit trees and I was wondering what's the best and/or quickest growing for Isaan. I read there is a mad dash for people to plant Durian for the crazy prices the fruits bring in around 5? years, but we don't need that. In our previous house, we had great success with the golden mango-like fruit called Mayongchit Tulklao. The second year it cropped there were kilos of 'em. Quite a high price in the markets. Unfortunately it took about 8 years to mature and produce and I doubt I'll see that long.

Maybe the wife should just get another 30 guava trees and stick with what she knows. But I'd like some variety so any comments welcome.

I haven't any recent experience but I have used the Hann facilities previously along with a friend of mine and we both have received excellent treatment there.

Thanks for the feedback. My wife will call them tomorrow.

  7. I've done a long seaarch and can't find much about the Dr.Hann Hospital in Yasothon.

Can anyone tell of any recent treatment ot experiences at this hospital.

I'm especially interested in the orthopedic clinic or their consultant.

    Thanks

  8. I am a retired Brit living 10 km from Phanom Phrai. I believe there are some other English guys living in the town or nearby and would really like to make contact with them as I will require help in the future regarding some English paperwork.

I heard there is a guy named Paul? in the area and if anyone knows or he reads this, please could you send a pm and I will give you more details.

    Thanks in advance.

In my amphur they want a certified copy of my pasport and officially translated and legalized by the Ministry....But I don't want to make so much costs now for in fact nothing.. Okay no pink card, but I have my driverslicense and if I need prrof of residence I go to immigration. Living 17 years in the same place, everybody knows me, have tax number, car and insurance, social security but no pink card

Yep, did that twice in 2 different translation offices. After the move I lost all the contacts I had made so, apart from family, I don't have anyone to step up and speak on my behalf.

    Thanks anyway.

  10. I don't know if this is the correct forum so moderators please move if necessary.

We moved from one province to another and have since built a house. For 20 years I was never interested in trying for a yellow book and pink card as we were renting a property. Now we have our own and with the banks changing the rules on money transfers etc, I was hoping a yellow book would make things easier.

Previously we lived in a provincial capital but our home is 65 km from the new one. So, I applied for a book in our local Amper. This was 3 months ago and my first stall was I needed more paperwork translating. Then a delay caused by voting weekend. Then some more hold ups. Next they found a spelling mistake made by one translator so I needed them all redoing and all spelt the same. In the meantime, the clerk at the local Amper insisted we took a civilian lady from our village to help with my application. This lady, as pleasant as she was, spoke no English so couldn't tell me what was happening and by this time was wife was totally out her depth.

Then those 2 needed to go again to the capital office (about 160 kms in her car) who agreed that one document was wrong and should be redone then all would be OK. So, off to another translator.

I now have my birth certificate, marriage lines, passport, medical documentation and other stuff all the same. My wife called the office and was told we needed to take this village lady with us again as she understood everything.

Including paying the village lady for her day and mileage, translations and so on, I am now approximately 7,000 thb into this fiasco and can only think this clerk is waiting to hit me again for a big pay off to eventually issue the yellow book. I want to go there for the sixth time and ask if she will finally issue the book without me paying sin bon to her, her boss, this village lady and her friend for a document which should be free.

I am at a loss as to what course of action to take. Should I go, present my paperwork anew and ask her to write down and sign why I cannot have the book?. Consult a solicitor in a one horse town, anti corruption office or what?.

If anyone has details in English or Thai listing the criteria for applying for a yellow book then please let me know......

    Thanks.

  11. Just finishing a new house near Yasothon and I'm looking for help finding a few locations in or around the town.

I heard there was lawn turf available somewhere near the bus station but can't find it. Do any of the garden centres have it?

Our truck needs new tyres and if bought online, does anyone know of a friendly local tyre garage who would fit them for a reasonable figure.

Finally, can anyone give me the location where a few foreigners meet up occasionally, again somewhere near the bus station?

    Thanks in anticipation

Dan Kwian pottery markets have  many.        Forget the exact price,   but       somewhere around 500 baht, I think.

Dan Kwian  is  on Highway 224, ,  south,  between  Korat and  Chok Chai  lies Dan Kwian.   all along the road    thru  the  village  are many pottery works.

Thanks for that. The location you give is a little too far but I will google the potteries name to see what that gives.

I found the ones around Sara Buri where I bought some items maybe 15 years ago, But also too far.

    Thanks again.

Our local garden centre has similar to that.  But I'm in Khon Kaen.

Thanks for that. Did you happen to see how much?

Either way, if I don't hear of anything closer, we would drive over to KK.

I could not open that file. Perhaps try posting it as a image (jpeg, png and etc).

I cannot change it, but since your post, I have double left clicked on the link which downlaods it then (on mine) double clicked to open the download.

    That definitely works every time.

    Thanks anyway.

  15. I don't know the name of the item I'm looking for so I've enclosed a generic picture similar to what I need.

We have a small piece of empty wall at the front of our new house and we would like to make it a focal point. I suppose it could be called a Thai traditional mural or mosaic but I'm, looking for something made from ceramic tile or stone as per the sample. Only 1.5m x 1.5m would be perfect.

If anyone knows a garden centre or merchants who have these on display in Yasothon or Roi Et, could you please send me details.

Does the hospital staff read this forum?

Not necessary in Nakhon Phanom as some Hospital Staff have foreign partners. Word of of mouth will always work.

May I add to the OP that our local staff have also been fantastic on my 4 visits to the local vaccinating centre. I had my 2 and went with the wife for hers.

The village volunteers were also very kind and efficient. Smiling faces everywhere even on the days when they pushed more than 1,000 through.

  17. I'm not in Ubon but I had my second Astra Zeneca only yesterday.

The slip they issued me with before leaving has a 13 digit number 3rd row down which has no meaning to me or my identity. It is in the space saying ID CARD Number.

Maybe this is the number you need.

  18. I opened this forum looking for the above and saw a similar recent one currently under discussion.

I have been married for almost 20 years and the retirement visa has been the best for me for many years. Previously the 400,000 in the bank worked but a wicked and totally unhelpful IO would give my wife a hard time and we needed to make several trips to the bank and neighbours to satisfy her (made up) requirements.

In a few months, due to an unforeseen overseas commitment, I may just fall short of the required 65k/month necessary for the retirement visa. My question is, would I be able to change as per the heading? My current extension is up for renewal next March and if necessary, I would probably need to change around October.

For many reasons, I have always been against using agencies. If others like or need to, then that's OK for them.

If the local office will change for me, I have the following questions.

Will the issue a new marriage visa costing 1,900 thb?

Is the requirement for this visa a 40k/month transfer?

Would I need to complete all the required paperwork (40 sheets as I recall)?

Will we need to visit the local registrar to confirm we are still legally married?

And what else would I/we need to do?

I should be able to find all this out from the Immigration website but I recently learned that even some of the downloadable forms are out of date. Plus I find things a little harder these days in my dotage.

Thanks in advance for any useful advice..

  19. There are hundreds of knockdown house builder videos on YouTube from all around the country. Some featuring foreign customers.

We are interested in viewing some being constructed in the Roi Et area. Unfortunately, the only one we could contact near highway 23 east of town replied they are not allowed to have customers visit because of current covid restrictions.

We have tried a few numbers from Facebook Market Place (maybe on the 214) site but cannot get replies to phone calls.

We would appreciate if anybody in the Roi Et/Mahasarakham/Amnat/Yaso areas can give us any information at all on any of these house builders. Better still phone numbers or Google Map locations. If you have any personal dealing with any such tradesmen, we would also appreciate any comments using pm.

Interprovincial travel permitting, we intend touring around next week searching for these guys.

    Thanks in advance

  20. When visiting Nong Phok a few months ago, we saw a few foreigners enjoying a beer near the night market. Unfortunately I couldn't join them on that visit. We are here again until 28/12 but the group was missing last night. I was told they have a new venue as that shop has stopped selling beer. Anyway, if anyone local knows where they now meet, please post me as the wife would like me out of her hair for an hour one evening --- except the 25th..
