You'll need to demonstrate that you meet the minimum income requirement of £18,600 per year, or have cash savings, for your wife to be issued with a Settlement Visa.
The application fee is in the region of US$1990 and in addition your wife will need to pay a NHS Surcharge of £600.
She will need to pass a basic English Language test and get a certificate to confirm she's free from TB.
You seem to be aware that you need to provide confirmation of suitable accommodation.
Once your wife has her visa she needs to get to the UK within 30 days and collect her Biometric Resident Permit.
She can apply for Further Leave to Remain after 30 months and the Indefinite Leave to remain after a further 30 months.
The goalposts haven't changed for some years, though the prices increase annually.

That is very useful info. Many thanks
big problems are the NHS who are a total pain. I moved back to the UK after 4 years in the land of greed and got DVT en route. A doctors appointment cost me £70 per 10 minutes followed by a prescription at an eye watering £137 .
Fortunately my new doctor is a star and fixed it such that I now am an NHS recipient but it rankles after having paid a massive amount if ££££ in my life into the system through NI and Income tax to be treated worse than an immigrant in my own country.

I have met both the good and the bad but what has always amazed ( and upset) me is the lack of empathy or sorrow once caught with their fingers in the cookie jar. Several times it got the distinct impression that they were trying to somehow lay the blame on me for them not repaying or stealing the car or whatever.
I could give stories of both of both types but I am sure most have encountered them in daily life.
i do take offence at the poster who intimated that you get what you deserve ( meet people like you) and I call that utter nonsense. I have been nothing but supportive to my wife's kids, never been in anyway dishonest. Paid the vast majority of the cost of the sons new house which I discovered had been completed but he, his rotten wife and their spawn preferred to stay at our house and make zero contribution to any of the costs (age mid 30's) and allowed their spawn to damage virtually everything they touched.
so i requested that hat they move into the house that I had financed and immediately I was hated. I was told it was too far from work ( 20 km) so too tired to drive home at night.
a couple of months later I discovered that in a pique of hatred towards the farang he had taken out a loan against the car I bought new three years ago in order to buy them a new car themselves. Now refusing to repay that loan and I am pretty sure the repo or loan sharks will be circling shortly.
I am am no longer there as it was all too much for me but I have advised the wife to drive it to a piece of waste land and burn the <deleted> thing. Then let's see who is in the cackar.
Lying does come easily to the Thais in my experience not always with malicious intent but lying is still lying.
Pretty sure the apologists will have something to say but frankly there is little they can say to piss me off now. I left and those who delude themselves by making excuses for every fault they encounter will one day wake up.

If you had looked more closely, you would have realized my wife does NOT have tattoos, just birthmarks. I know, it was dark, etc. And she does speak English, just doesn't have much to say.
Sounds ideal, a quiet wife. I am acutely envious.

Sure. Just without sweeping generalisatios that everyone is paying for it. It's kinda on the same level denial as farang saying it's fine to live on 10k baht a month like a Thai. Otherwise I have the same right as anyone to comment on it. Btw, the thread should be renamed what do you most like about Thai prostitutes imo.Hi Global guy ,
you make a good good point though there are a fairly substantial number of prostitutes that are (genuine) girls ( generic use of the word) so they are included in the title I would have surmised.
In my wild and very much happier youth as a ingleton, I admit to having partaken in an occasional dip or two in that particular "watering hole" and I swear I never knowingly dipped the love log into anything that did not fit under the genre girls
but hey, you never know!

You have good advice above, but I want to thank you for your work in Afganistan. Stay safe!
I fully concur, you did not mention your profession and so I have assumed it from your nationality and current location. Stay safe and thank you (genuinely) for your service.

Not sure what you mean by pause.
A re-entry permit is valid until the date your extension ends. When you enter using it you will be stamped in to that date.
Thanks UJ, as my extension to reside based on retirement expires Feb 18, as long as I come back before then I will not have invalidated my extension of stay .
Much clearer now thanks for the info and info and apologies for the hijack.

Leaving Thailand without having obtained a Re-entry Permit will void your current visa/extension of stay. You need do nothing further than that. The other questions I will leave to those with specific knowledge.
Sorry for hijacking and off topic but does anyone know how long the "pause" on the extension to stay on retirement is valid when you leave Thailand for overseas?

The girls are lovely it's their families;
1. family borrows farang's money and pays it back.
2. family asks for bigger loan for business venture.
3. business goes belly up - money gone!.
4. family gets angry when farang asks for loan back
5. family takes what's left from farang.
6. divorce/suicide/accidental death.
And all the while the lady loves you to bits and cannot understand her own family
Oh wise owl, what an utterly cynical but horrifically accurate picture you laid out for us. Can I send you the bill to clean my mid morning coffee off my shorts?
If it were not so so bloody true it would be laughable ( well I laughed anyway)

It does not.
When is your report due? If you leave before the report is due you do not have to do it.
If you have a valid re-entry permit in your passport you do not need another one. The fee is 1000 baht for a single re-entry permit and 3800 baht for a multiple.
Yes
Thanks UJ, much appreciated.

I wrote visa since that allows a new entry to the country.
A re-entry permit is not a visa and does not give a new entry. It allows a entry based upon an entry done before.
Ho UJ and my apologies for upsetting you much earlier in this thread. Does the extension of stay based on retirement therefore require the Bht 20k to be produced?
If we have already proved to the same entity ( immigration) that we are fiscally sound and meet their criteria, why would they demand to see more?
i am going to do my 90 day day reporting next Thursday but on Friday I fly out for a couple of months. As the 90 day report costs nothing I don't see any problem but I will presumably need to purchase the Bht 1900 exit reentry stamp ( sorry cannot right now recall the correct name) which I will do at immigration in khorat.
When i I come back though my "new" 90 days starts from the day of arrival does it not?

I had a dreadful experience also with thaipost where information that could have been used for identity theft went missing in a registered mail letter ( delivered not signed for)
i have spent eight eight months seeking resolution but all I get is " the matter has been passed to the investigating officer and if he finds anything we will respond"
used to be brilliant service comparable to most westernservices but now.........

We have some guys nearby who are wannabe Phil Collins ( in his drumming days). Sadly they still require many more years of practice much to the "delight" of anyone within a zillion km of their pad.
My answer?
My guitar practice sessions at a reasonably loud level.
Dunno if if it works but I can hear them!
actually they have ceased and desisted not sure if it was due to their " drumming" skills or my bass guitar rendition if "money" by Pink Floyd.

It is the labor department that checks on work permits or work related situations. If one has a work permit- they do from time to time come to check the location. If one does not have a work permit- and the work one is doing is not obvious- the chances are lower that anyone would care. However, if one gets into an argument with a neighbor and that neighbor is wise to the law- they can make a complaint and then the authorities visit. Normally, working on one's own home would not cause an issue- unless someone makes a formal complaint and then the officials come and where it ends depends on several issues such as where the 'work' occurs; the status of the complainant; and what is being alleged.
In a rural area- working on one's own land (actually it belongs to the wife) would not draw any ire unless what is being grown encroaches on the business interests of a Thai or there was a disagreement between parties.
Digital nomads are pretty safe because no one can see them- however, if they make many calls per month or are using sophisticated technology to connect abroad- the authorities can become suspicious and investigate. I would eventually expect this to come under more and more scrutiny as Thailand becomes more sophisticated with technology and surveillance.
To me, the best advice is to get a work permit and work only in the location of the permit- if one keeps everything legal- there is never a worry. If one cannot get a work permit- they may want to reconsider what they are doing as the new law is draconian.
Man I feel your pain. You have a heart of gold, you have given up plenty to live where you don't really want to be and are hounded by corrupt officials.
the frustration levels must be intense but hang in there my friend, do not be cowed by these savages that are hounding you. What you are doing may we'll be in the grey area ( as most is) but you are an honourable chap and can hold your head up high no matter what.
wish I could help you, honestly!

I discovered 'Floyd sort of by accident when "Time" was used as the music for a caving programme called (IIRC) "Worlds Without Sun" of which I can find zero reference on the net. Drug induced memory? Perhaps.

Well I have earned a good living out of it. It has mostly been American country music I play, I have never really heard Pink Floyd, but I know they are one of these heavy rock type bands who are very loud, country bands are not.
Just pulling your leg possum old friend, music, no matter what it is classed as, is the food of life. I prefer the post Dark side of the moon creations and have always been an avid devotee of what was classed as progressive with bands such a genesis, camel pink Floyd, crimson king, yes etc some of which is the type you instantly like or not. Personally not a great fan of C&W ( just love that quote in the blues brothers) or jazz and not into heavy but I always approach any new band or music with an open mind. ( ok boy bands, these computer assisted sugar coated fifi's etc don't ring my bell either!)
would love love to watch and hear you one day so if you do come out of retirement and start on the circuit, let me know pls.
cheers

Eventually but certainly not immediately as your records would have been sent to the central filing place ( or google!) during your absence.
How can you prove you moved back permanently?
I have an NHS number, an address but needed a letter from the bank and/or utility suppliers etc before they would act. Fill out a four page questionnaire including multiple choices on gender you declare yourself to be but until that has been cleared ( and no bugger will write to tell you that you are now back on line) you pay. Fortunately my doctor has an excellent reception and practice management so mine was expedited. In the interim however.......
