  1. Hmm, seems banks are a popular target these days. Wonder how this will get linked to Mr. T?

In respect of your comment, I understand the bombings are related to the outcome of the Taksin case. As serveral Banks are believed to of been sponsors of the Coup in 2006, that threw out Taksin & lead to TRT being disbanded. In my experience with people, we are all one in what ever part of the world we were originally born & Thai

    people are No different...Peace.

    NO

You guys are getting events very mixed up.

The bombings in this report are in the South - they have nothing to do with Thaksin and the court case - they are to do with the extremist violence that has plagued the South for the past several years - you know the stuff where innocent people are killed every day.

Hmmm, you really shouldn't make comments if you are not at least slightly informed about what is happening in Thailand.

In their defense - this was sent as a "news update" email to members of TV.. and the email conveniently left out the words "In Narathiwat" which is extremely misleading considering the events of the past week. Someone in TV needs to take a journalism ethics class.

  2. In any event an attack on the banking system and in central Bangkok is a terrorist attack on the nation of Thailand. This is serious.

    Take a chill pill.

Someone may or may not have tossed a grenade. It is stupidity. It may be criminal, but the terrorism label is unwarranted.

It's definitely terrorism, by any classical definition of the word, unless you're claiming that it was just some kids having fun or something. The word 'terrorism' has been hijacked in the past decade or so to mean something greater than it really is.

  3. I have an Iphone 3G with DTAC's 50hr/200baht/month package, and I've had no problems with data "leaking". I have pushmail off and have it fetch my emails hourly. I've been impressed with how little minutes I use this way. To answer the OP's question, yes my "E" icon is always on

  4. Crushdepth is right - for the most part avoid these SEO companies. Instead, use that money to hire a professional web designer who knows how to create a google-friendly site and is willing to constantly update it. It will take time, but it will work. If you go the SEO route, you'll likely see no real improvement in RELEVANT search results, and worse, your company reputation may suffer and you could even be banned from google altogether. If you do decide to go the SEO route, have them guarantee a specific goal in contract before they receive the full payment. However, I seriously doubt any SEO company would do this, because they know it would be impossible to guarantee.

  5. Sorry you're quite wrong. Many new PCs are pre-loaded with pirated softwares.... even from 'reputable' dealerships. I tend to agree with Tmark... it's near impossible to source machines with 100% legal and licenced softwares.

Most reputable dealers will put a licensed version on the computers, and if you're not sure, just ask. If they lie to you, contact Microsoft and they'll send you a free licensed version for reporting that dealer. Again, this is assuming they are a 'reputable' dealer, not some no-name shop in Pantip.

    Q:

What is the genuine Windows offer?

    A:

The Microsoft genuine Windows offer is designed to help customers who unknowingly purchased counterfeit versions of Windows XP by offering those who qualify a complimentary copy or electronic license key for a genuine copy of Windows XP.

  6. If so, that brings to mind this analogy:

    yes : yeah :: ครับ : คับ

Good call on that one. Probably the best explanation for the question by the OP :) As for yes, some people will write 'ya' or 'yep'

  7. Where do you get your information? According to http://flutracker.rhizalabs.com/ the official count in the US is as of this moment:

United States total - 38,744 confirmed cases, 201 deaths

Back here in the US the swine flu is all but forgotten. Nobody running around wearing masks. And we border Mexico where is started.

    Cases in border states:

    Texas - 900 cases, 3 deaths

    California - 553 cases

    Arizona - 520 cases, 2 deaths

    New Mexico - 97 cases

United States total - 6,552 cases, 9 deaths

Hysteria in the only pandemic going on here. The 1976 Swine Flu vaccine killed 25 US whereas the Swine Flu only claimed 1 life.

  8. Last week I went for a 'trial day' at California Wow, and of course they tried hard to sell me a membership. After talking with them for about 30 minutes their final offer was a family lifetime membership to use any center in Bangkok for 12,000 baht - not including Yoga OR 15,000 including yoga. Seemed like a good deal to me, but I told them I'd check out other gyms and think about it first.

What are the going rates for other gyms in Bangkok, particularly Fitness First?

  9. yesterday in Pattaya, i had occasion to want to enter the Soi near to Jamesons that leads to the back of Big C North Pattaya.

i had my wife and my 75 year old mother in the car.

as we approached to turn, a number of men surrounded the car and i was told in no uncertain terms that i could not enter what is a a public road and the point was emphasised by a number of men with their faces covered with bandanas waving fence posts and big sticks at me.

A state of emergency had been declared in your city.. driving your 75 year old mother around might not have been the best idea.

  10. You didn't do anything wrong or unusual at all. You shouldn't touch a Thai lady in a normal environment, but assuming you just touched her lightly while talking.. and in a CLUB, it's not a problem. Actually, most clubs i've been at in Thailand are so cramped that it would be impossible NOT to touch other people.

  11. I gotta call BS on that one. 8 years comeing back and forth and I was never even stoped to have my bag checked at customs. None of my family or fellow Black friends where ever harrassed in any way. hel_l not even my Iraqi friends where ever harrassed. In fact the only time I ever saw any discrimination against me because of the color of my skin here was from WHITE people not Thais. And even then it was only twice I can remember.

And thats it folks, 8 years of doing everything, going everywhere, being single, getting married, all that..Thats it for discrimination.

Yes The advertising is out there, but unlike America, where whites still drag Black people from the backs of trucks untill they are dismembered (Google Brandon McClelland, just killed this moth 10 years since the last lynching there in Texas just a couple hundred miles away) in Thailand the color issue is more of a profitible self hate. Yes profitable because it allows a handfull of people to control what is considered beautiful and its a immage that 90% of Thais need to invest serious money to attain, and most never will. So they devalue their sence of self worth the darker their skin gets. The key word being THEIR, I have never seen them put that devaluation on me or any Blacks I know.

I gotta disagree with you on this one.. I've worked in both the US and Thailand for many years and from my experience there is a LOT more prejudism against dark-skinned people here than the US. In the US, the subject is very taboo and you won't often hear white people making racist comments. However, here in Thailand you will quite often hear comments about Indians or Black people. The difference is that in the US it is a small minority that is very racist. Here in Thailand, it's not so much racism, but prejudism and fear of the unknown, however it is the majority of the people who feel this way.

  12. I have an unusual question but it's bugging me badly. I have a girlfriend in Mae Sot. I travel on business often and we stay in touch with mobiles. Sometimes, she will switch off her phone, which never bothered me or made me suspicious but a friend recently said to me that Thai girls never ever switch off their phones and i should be suspicious of this. This one sentence from my friend has now turned me into mr parnoia and i wanting to know if Thai girls really never switch off their phones. Does your wife or girlfriend do this? I want to point out that my girlfriend is not a bar girl and works a normal job as a manager's office assistant.

They would probrably switch it off for the same reasons as you would. Whoever told you that "Thai girls" never do something is just stirring you up. Maybe she ran out of battery... Why not just casually ask her?

  13. Are there words in English/other first languages you avoid using around Thais ?

A few i've come across in personal experience..

Avoid the name "Jim" or going to the "gym", especially using it at the end of a question. for example, "Are you Jim?" or "Do you like the gym?" (The rising tone makes all the difference)

If you have a some english/aussie accents, avoid yelling "Here!" Americans pronounce the r strong enough that it isn't an issue.

  14. I dont know about "what jokes thai's dont like" but i dont think they understand the following:

    Flippancy

    Sarcasm

    one liners

    Puns

    winding them up(pommy term)

like most people they are sensitive to remarks about their appearance, fatness etc.

but they do smile and laugh alot so they must find something funny, maybe its us!.........am only having a laugh ok.

You're wrong about the puns and one-liners! Puns and one liners are really common forms of Thai humor. However, English puns don't go over so well probrably because of the language barrier. If you're speaking to Thais, using Thai language, you'll find it quite common though.

You're right about the others though.. stay away from sarcasm unless you're REALLY close friends with them and you're sure that they'll find it funny.

  15. This "news item" sounds bunk to me.. I think something got lost in translation. I finally found the news item on the Nation after a lot of searching, but couldn't find it anywhere else on the internet. Does anyone have a link to the story in a Thai language newspaper?

I believe the part about the IPAA (lobby of 1300 US companies) urging the Thai government to make the law, but come on.. the rest of the story is just hype. Why this was posted as breaking news is beyond me..
