You're right, tourist areas are always worse, just like here in Thailand. And i traveled solo, it's obviously safer to stay in a group.

    Btw, nice pictures!

Not my pictures. Pulled them off the Innernet as have none on this laptop. Though I think mine are even more impressive. Though to be fair my girlfriend takes them all....thousands of 'em.

Was just me, my girl and her camera and iPad. ????

We needed the iPad at the time to access the App for the bikes. Was a bit annoying to carry around at the time.

Once I was standing alone in Flamengo Park with the iPad waiting for girlfriend to turn up and someone came along and asked for money. If I didn't have the iPad in my hand I might have offered something. But didn't want to tempt fate by having him try to grab it, so just said no and off he went.

In general I gave generously, as many have nothing and I have, relatively, a lot.

If I saw a bunch of 'street children' hanging around Botafogo shoppers with their shoe shine box, I would give them 20 Reals just to keep them out of trouble and tell them to buy food for the whole group, which they did.

Then they scampered off into the distance.

Anyway, let's not ruin the man's thread with our reminiscing. ????

I still think it's high crime. In any case, what does it matter if you can't qualify for their visa anyway?

I asked him. That's why it matters.

In addition, why would you assume that he cannot qualify for the visa?

The requirements for a retirement visa are less than Thailand's, at currently, 50,672 baht per month

I stayed in Rio 2 months and got robbed at knife point twice, in broad daylight. Not to mention all those times i managed to escape. Been in Bangkok 15 years, so far no such incident. I love Rio, wonderful music, food and ladies but, i just think it's to dangerous.

Where on earth did you stay in Rio?

Before my first visit, we too imagined it would be rife with crime. But we went everywhere, even places we weren't supposed to go, by accident wandering into the 'wrong' favela.

Perhaps we are just lucky. Been there at least four times now.

All well and good till you come to use the 'visa' card on line.  They issued me, at first, with a POS Chinese Unionpay card with which I was severely embarrassed in Vientiane.

I stormed into my branch on my return as people on here said the Bank were issuing proper cards from November 2018.

Got mine - AOK as an ATM.  As soon as I tried to pay for air tickets, same problem as Unionpay.  Had to use my UK card with all the attendant foreign currency charges.

You can only have a Credit card (by keeping a top-up account) -  BKK bank don't do debit cards  anymore.

Why not obtain/utilise a U.K. card that doesn't have any charges? There are many. No excuse unless you no longer have any ties to the U.K. But since you state that you still have a U.K. card.

If you don't still go there, but still have friends with a U.K. address there, you could try; https://loot.io

Then get them to send the card out to you.

Just buy this Sim card: https://www.lazada.co.th/products/4mbps-1-3g4g-i257626141-s396924058.html?spm=a2o4m.searchlist.list.3.6cca7705MBfYx1&search=1

When it arrives you have to activate it in a True shop. 12 months of 4mbps unlimited internet, so effectively 100 baht per month. For calling you have to top up money like any other prepaid sim card

The 'problem' with that solution is that once that year is up, there will be no more of those SIM and the OP will have only the poor package option. So, if he does go with the Truemove H SIM, he should take steps to keep the current AIS SIM active throughout the year, in so he can avail himself of the long term AIS packages above in the future.

On the other hand, the Truemove H SIM may still be open to the older Truemove H packages.

So good solution, but keep the current AIS SIM active if it was originally obtained and registered before the 1st of Feb.

Thank you KneeDeep, I am here on a retirement Visa. I will seek your help after my attempt.

As long as you obtained and registered your SIM prior to the 1st of Feb this year, the codes above will work fine.

But if you are here on a retirement visa, then perhaps you need a longer term package, which works out a lot cheaper on a monthly basis.

Six months of 1 Mbps(0.125 MB/s) Internet costs just 642 baht. Twelve months 1284 baht.

Six months of 4 Mbps(0.5 MB/s) Internet costs just 1498 baht. Twelve months 2675 baht.

Six months of 6 Mbps(0.75 MB/s) Internet costs just 1926 baht. Twelve months 3745 baht.

    Which suits you best?

    Hello everyone,

I am new to the Sim card and internet use. All I know is that 5 months ago I have been buying a new sim and no limit on data at speeds around 3-4 Mbps for 149 Bhat. Now in March AIS said it is no longer available. They offered me something for one month for 399 plus vat 427 Bhat. I thought I was getting the same 149 Bhat deal for 427 Bhat. But I was wrong after 5 GB of data my speed dropped to 128kb.  I use close to one GB a day. So 5 days into the one month deal I am out of internet now. I finally got here to the forum trying to seek help as to how I can prevent myself from making the same mistake of not knowing the concept of data volume and net speed. I realized now that what I need is a net speed of 1-4 Mbps but unlimited data volume, good for 30 days, which I have been getting all along the past few months. Could the members of the forum please be kind enough to guide me through the process of getting an internet connection with slower speeds like 1-4 Mbps but unlimited data from one of the 3 vendors available. Thanking you all

Do you have an existing SIM that was registered before the 1st of February?

If you do, just top up at least 321 baht tap in *777*7153# and then the dial button for 1 Mbps unlimited or top up 535 baht and then *777*7159# for 4 Mbps

If you are staying longer than two months, then think about a six month package. 1 Mbps for six months is 642 baht inclusive.

My prescription changes every couple of years and new lenses are often needed. I have replaced my lenses several times because of this, and I usually get it done here for about 500-1000B depending on the type of lens. But I havent bought any new frames for about 5 years. Also I have several different pairs for different uses as I dont like vari/multi-focals. I also dont like carrying them around so I tend to leave one pair in the car, one by my bed, one by my PC, one on my coffee table etc.

To be fair, my prescription is not complicated. So for those with progressive lense/bi-focals etc. they might have a differing outlook.

For my relatively simple prescription, these glasses are working out fine. Will order a spare pair or two.

Sure, there are some shops who sell things with a high margin.

But there are also definitely high quality differences.

I use my titanium frame since years. No corrosion, nothing ever broken, perfect. And my lenses have multiple coating. No problems at night and/or with rain while driving.

Lenses have to be fitted 100% correct. With astigmatism the angle has to be 100% correct and the center of the lens has to be 100% correct. If I wear the "test frame" (shown above) I can adjust the angle myself to make sure it's 100% correct. And I know it's 100% correct because I can read even the smallest numbers on the test chart.

I want to see as good as it gets (for me). I am willing to pay a couple of 1000B more to get that. If you prefer to save that money that's obviously up to you.

I bought my glasses in Singapore, in 1992. I only replaced them last year because I dropped them on to the pavement and the glass shattered.

100% blah blah blah... I utilised the my U.K prescription for my online order, but dropped the dioptres by 1 in each eye.

    Much more comfortable.

The distance between your pupils doesn't change, so which measurements are not going to be 100% correct if your reliable optometrist supplied them in the first instance?

As I stated, pay more if you like, but if my glasses were not comfortable, they would already be in the bin.

I've tried all options, but like the fact that I can tailor my glasses to what I want and not necessarily what the optometrist seems to think is best.

All of the products(contact lenses and glasses) supplied by the optometrist sit in a cupboard, as they are too strong and give me headaches.

Always avoid female IOs at the border. They seem to have the need to outscore their male counterparts.

It was a male officer that referred me to his supervisor...who then overruled his subordinate in every matter.

Female officer questioned me, but on seeing my papers, made no further issue.

So cannot agree that it is a female problem.

    No, not a trial.

    Activation 2019-02-20 164014.jpg

AFAIK a Win 7 Home goes to a Win 10 Home and a Win 7 Pro upgrades to a Win 10 Pro - you stay with the level of licence you originally bought.

In many cases, you can upgrade your Home Premium to Professional or Ultimate before then moving to Windows 10 Pro.

In addition there is no need to upgrade over the top of an existing Windows 7 install. You can simply take a snapshot of the Windows 7 activation, clean install Windows 10 and then apply the snapshot of the Windows 7 activation to Windows 10.

This especially useful if wanting to clean install the OS on to a new SSD.

The price you pay for anything outside your country depends on the money exchange rate. Exchange rate for Pound Sterling at the moment is 40Baht/PS. 10 years ago 79B/PS, so now anybody who's money is in P/Stirling shopping or living in T/LAND their paying nearly twice as much as they were 10years ago for the same thing. This has nothing to do with the Thai Government its to do with western government situation. the Pound will gain in value when out of the EU and the EURO  will sink.

Just your wishful thinking and nothing to do with reality...

I think it's interesting how many people here want cheap and cheaper.

Personally I want a quality frame, quality lenses and a good optician who knows what he is doing.

I go to Opticland in Sukhumvit near the corner of Soi 29

    https://www.facebook.com/Opticland29

    Not cheap, but very good!

Sorry, but you are just over-complicating a simple matter.

Yes, you want a comprehensive eye test, but if you think that you are getting a better product and lens from the average optician, you are sorely mistaken.

This is how they make their money, from inflated prices for frames and lenses.

My spectacles are as good as any I have worn, if not better and they cost me £18 delivered. I used the prescription that I got from Boots The Opticians.

So sorry, but a good frame and good lenses I have and I guess the UK optician knew what they were doing.

If you want to pay more for the same, that's up to you, but don't try to sell us snake oil. I've seen the crap that many opticians here sell at high prices.

It does indeed look like the unlimited packages of AIS and True are gone.

Dtac increased their prices drastically, 4mbps is now 650 per month + vat: http://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/go-no-limit.html

Seems like there were too many people using too much bandwidth with these packages

Until not long ago when you made a fibre internet contract with True you got a 4 mbps unlimited sim card for free, now they also changed this to a sim card with a limited amount of traffic: http://trueonline.truecorp.co.th/package

Same for AIS Fibre packages which came with a 4mbps unlimited sim card before, they now have limits: http://www.ais.co.th/fibre/en/package_power4maxx.html

    No, this is quite wrong.

DTAC are the only ones who have not changed their tariffs. Your link is simmply the wrong one. You link if for a data and calls bundle.

    Data only is here; http://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/net-no-limit.html

    Same price as always.

As are AIS and TruemoveH prices, for SIMs registered before the 1st of Feb.

15 days ago I made the promotion to 1 mbps unlimited for 6 months at 600 Baht on my wife's phone, yesterday I tried to do it on my own but I can not find it anymore, I tried both with the APP and on the site. P.S. my sim has been active for more than 9 years. Other companies (true / dtac) have unlimited offers at a similar price? I already have fiber at home I would not be spending too much)

Not true, as Truemove H has done the same thing, for SIMs registered  from the 1st of Feb.

    So, only DTAC is left.

Your SIMs should be fine, click through as normal here; https://m.ais.co.th/ontop-package-myais

If that doesn't work for you, tap in the code directly...
