  1. I tend to have a morning ritual of skimming through many news outlets while drinking my coffee and over the last week I have been unable to update mailonline. Some will say that I am missing nothing of importance but I do find the sometimes radical opinions amusing. I am wondering if this is censorship as the Daily Mail is not a favourite of the Establishment, anyone else having the same problems ?.
  2. I think this gentleman would be very happy to be forgotten rather than some University activist bringing this up again. As for the concern as to how he is surviving ,he was a senior officer and I am sure he would have had a suitable retirement fund somewhere
  3. Don’t forget the famous drug dealers, bikie enforcers and other slippery lowlife that are continually being found here. First stop for any drug lord is usually Thailand and then Dubai.
  4. Safety first, absolutely… from Westpac using OSCO, immediate funds transfer to Wise Australia account, immediate email acknowledgment of funds received, then check with SCB, funds in account within one minute, back to Mail foe email saying funds sent with note it might take so many hours for my bank to post it. where did you hear that Wise is not dealing with Westpac ?.
  5. Safety first has just posted that Wise no longer deals with Westpac !!! I have just transferred funds taking less than two minutes from Westpac Australia to S C B Krabi, where did this information come from ?
  6. I note that one poster says Westpac only charges $5 per transfer, that may be correct but the exchange rate they apply may be as much as one and a half baht per dollar lower than Wise, I have used Wise for three years plus and all extensions needing financial information have been accepted. I have just checked and the difference between Wise and Westpac for $A 3000 is 2300 baht !!! In Wise’s favour .
  7. My first introduction to Issan cooking, or lack of , was at a restaurant at Lam Pao Dam where my wife and her family ate live prawns. The lady that sold them took a small scoop of live prawns, ho longer than an inch, stirred them in a bowl with sauces and green shoots and then put them on a large leaf. They were then scooped up and wrapped in another leaf and eaten. What amused me were the cats that accompanied the seller, they sat quietly beside the table and if one of the prawns managed to escape that was their snack. I stuck to the chicken on two sticks.
  8. Great idea, last time In Bangkok we went for a ride on one of the commercial boats for some ridiculously cheap fare. The water was absolutely filthy and my upcountry wife was not impressed however I thought the houses and little offshoots were fascinating. I see that a they are now proposing electric boats and if it happens can only help with tourism, next project will be to stop the locals treating the canals as sewers, good luck with that.
  9. I remove the card about once every couple of weeks and download it to my MacBook , I then put it back in the camera, go to menu, check all the settings and go to re format. This will give a warning that all info will be removed and card is then ready to start recording again. After viewing the recordings I then delete all that are just boring which thankfully most are, the only important one is two minutes before and including the accident. You can get an SD card in any camera or phone shop , must be class 10 for quality.
  10. Just a final thought, you commented that the problem was of course night vision, when I bought my older Ford Focus it had a medium tint on all the windows. I firstly replaced headlight bulbs as I thought they were not good enough but came to the conclusion the tint was the problem, I removed the front screen tint and vision improved dramatically. Next I put a band or tint on just the top of the screen and cut the side window tint so that I could see the rear view mirrors clearly, amazing the difference. When you can’t see the driver through the windscreen in the day how much do you think he can see at night, answer, very little.
  11. My opening page tap on image, there are a lot if you scroll down. What year is your altis ?
  12. toyota altis headlights ...........my initial fault was Toyota Corolla without specifying altis...I am now looking at opening page...only a few for Altis and they are quite pricey . Not sure if they are complete units including reflectors.
  13. Check out Lazada. enter Toyota Corolla headlights and dozens appear from 339 Bht to 1600, depends on your model. Any local mechanic can fit them for 200 bht I have just checked again and found them for 299, you will see the same photo illustration on a wide variation of prices.
  14. check out YouTube, full of methods to make them look like new. In my case Lazada was selling new covers for my Ford Focus for less than 400 baht, easy to replace and looks like new.
  15. This reminds me so much about comments made about Melbourne’s swimming beaches back in the seventies. It was said that you didn’t swim , you just went through the motions, sorry but very much an Aussie/ Pommy joke.
  16. My explanation to wife’s sons regarding their attitude when riding is ,you and scooter 200 kilo , me and car 2000 kilo, who wins in collision. I hate to admit that I am less shocked than I used to be, the attitudes will never change, ten year olds driving scooters with two or more siblings on the back is totally normal. I have no answers and it seems people in authority have no will to change or enforce the laws, as usual T I T.
  17. Retirement in Thailand nursing home has often been featured in Australia with very positive views. The Australian retirement industry, and I use the term industry correctly is rife with horror tales. Staff are quite well paid but the training and selection is very low quality, it is a thankless job and of course the inmates suffer. Families are today not as close knit as in the past, selling the family home when Mum or Dad dies releases a lot of capital and putting the parent in a home seems to be a simple solution. I have had personal experience of retirement homes as my late partner was one of the few qualified staff in a large complex in Queensland, the working conditions were totally unacceptable. As medication Nurse she had to administer tablets twice a shift to sixty patients, this is not a simple job with dementia patients who had to be coaxed to take their essential medications. I actually worked out that she had less than a minute per patient to ensure their compliance and no time to socialise or listen to them. We submitted the figures to management and was told that was her job, she was not a social worker, she finally left after nearly having a breakdown. To those who know the Australian retirement village scene I am sure that Thailand with all its faults certainly rates much higher in compassion and the human factor , something that sometimes has to replace the family you rarely see.
  18. Hey fellow posters let’s not laugh too hard, too many men have been caught in the same way. Some have been lucky and learned a lesson , others have decided to join the “flying clubs “ as frequently reported. He would be wise to drop all actions and move to another country in the area, live and learn, not really a large sum to pay for the lesson.
  19. First thoughts, the driver acted correctly, maybe a tragic accident and he accepts his wrongdoing, second thought, he is rich and probably very influential so why worry.
  20. Minding your own business is often suggested but what person can ignore this abuse. Unfortunately too many children are harmed by parents often resulting in death, tragically nobody interfered..
  21. Very good, I always despair when I see the Ivory recovered from Poachers being burnt in a big publicity event. To me the controlled release of tusks with the funds going to preservation of Elephants is much more logical and might even deter buyers of illicit ivory, and cut down the poaching.
  22. To our Newbie who thinks this report is disgraceful, have you noticed that you are in Thailand. Everyone in Thailand is distinctly tribal, my Female friend in Bangkok considers everything south of Hua Hin peasant country and as for Issan , enough said. We as Falangs are fair game and anyone who isn't Thai is also subject to discrimination not only P O C ( just being politically correct). T I T remember .
  23. In 2015 I traveled to Penang for a visa run in a minivan from Krabi, that was the last time ever in a van. The drivers standard of reckless driving was mirrored by at least eighty percent of the vans I saw, tailgating, undertaking, sheer aggression all seemed to be standard procedure. Now that the drivers have a chance to earn a living again you would think that they might be a bit more careful but no, nothing changes………. T I T sums it up.
  24. I commented earlier that engine oil cost is minimal in the overall running costs of a car. To purchase a litre of diesel or petrol is currently around thirty baht a litre, this will give you approximately 10 to 15 kilometres of travel, four litres of the most expensive, branded engine oil will not cost more than two thousand baht and will protect the engine for at least fifteen thousand kilometres, as I said , minimal compared to all other costs associated with distance traveled.
