Joe i am actually in Laos now. Yesterday i went to get my tourist visa and the guy at the window asked me fro my financial statement Is this normal from now or he was was not knowing what he was doing? The guy behind me was in the same boat he said to me later he has been never asked for financial statement for tourist visa.Anyway he let me of the hook because how was i supposed to know i needed that Strange sometimes Non-Immigrant O yes but not tourist i feel

Was this in Savannakhet or Vientiane?

  2. I am going to Vientiane for a SETV next month.. my passport is getting pretty full is has 5 pages left.

When I was in Hong Kong the consulate official looked through all my exempt stamps and two tourists visas that I have used in the last 2 years and they decided not to give me a visa.

So I am now wondering should I:

    1. Go to Vientiane with my current passport and hope for the best. I hear Vientiane is pretty good with giving visas. I only have two tourist visas in the 2 years the rest are exempt entires land/air... i would like to do this to use up my current pport
    2. Get a new passport before heading out again so the consulate official cannot see all my previous entries(expensive - 10000 baht ?)

    Cheers!

Not sure why you’re surprised. It’s been promoted as “one of the best locations”, which has probably increased the number of applications from long term ‘tourists’, which inevitably would result in reports like this.

Yeah, there were three times as many people this year then when I was there last year.

Maybe it's like that on Mondays

This is quite surprising, as Hong Kong has been one of the best locations to apply for a tourist visa. What questions did they ask you? Did they ask for any documents you were unable to provide? Had you received tourist visas from Hong Kong before? If so, when?

I got a SETV from HK last year in February no issues at al. Since then I have stupidly been on back to back visa exempt entries with extensions. Spending only 1 month back home in AUS.

I actually had all the required documents, except my bank statement was missing 1 page it was a 3-page statement i only had the first 2 pages which 'did not have the information they need'.

He asked what I was doing in Thailand for two years, I said I was traveling around, staying with friends and a lady (probably far from the best answer).

He then asked where I get money from - I said I have an online business running in Australia(which is true), he seemed to acknowledge this as if it was ok.

He then asked about the guarantor on my application who is my landlord(dunno who else to put, my gf?). Asked me for more information on this person, I said they are more than welcome to call the number and speak to the landlord. They didnt do that.

He then said wait I will talk with my boss, sit down first.

5 minutes later the boss said I have to go back to thailand and get a 30 day visa exemption and if I want a toursit visa I need to apply for one in my home country.

Unless you have a history of doing visa exempt back to back you should be able to get one without a problem.

I suggest you have at least the equivalent of 10k baht in cash and ticket out of the country to show. Best to have a ticket to someplace where you can get another tourist visa in case you were denied entry.

My last 2-3 pages of my passport are full of exempt stamps and extensions stamps.. Pretty silly of me to use up both my land border crossings.

But I do have the cash requirement and I will make sure I have a flight out and a hotel booking to show.

  6. I was just denied a tourist visa in Hong Kong.

I have been in Thailand since 2016 on visa exemptions and two SETV's. When submitting the application the man asked a lot of questions and wanted to see a lot of info and even info about the guarantor I put on the form ( he could of just called the number that I put there if he thought I was bullshitting?)

In the end he gave the application to his boss who said I have to go back to Australia to apply for a tourist visa.

SO I need some advice please people. What is my best option from here? I have a flight to Phuket tomorrow night.

Should I fly in and attempt a visa exempt entry ( I have used 3 visas exempt this year already, two walk-ins have been used up. )

Or should I spend a shit ton of money and go to Vientiane from Hong Kong and apply for a tourist visa there.

I am thinking to try to fly back tomorrow on visa exempt and then going to Vientiane the next time I have to go out.

  7. This is a little off topic but..

If for whatever reason you were denied at an airport.

Would they send you to your home country or back from where you came.

My home country is AUS, most flights stop over in KL or Singapore. So for example, if they did send me back to Aus could I not just enter KL or Singapore when the flight gets there and come back to Thai over land or would the Tourist visa be voided?

The visa exempt entries are not a factor at most consulates.

You should be fine if you want to get one more visa in Hong Kong. Vientiane will be OK for at least two (likely three) visas, though busy unless you are willing to apply Friday and stay through the weekend. The requirements at both are minimal.

Other good places to apply (but with requirements, typically financial proof and/or onward flight tickets) are Savannakhet, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Yangon.

Phnom Penh has a number of disadvantages, and I recommend against getting visas there unless you particularly want to visit anyway.

Something to consider is that entering by air (even with a visa) can sometimes be subject to extra scrutiny when you have been a "tourist" in Thailand for an extended period. Vientiane and Savannakhet avoid that problem as you can re-enter by land.

If you want an easy life, and no risk re-entry into Thailand, I suggest Vientiane (staying the weekend) for your next two visa runs, and then Savannakhet ensuring you have the required financial proof to show them.

Thanks for that info! Much appreciated.

I have already done 2 walk-ins this year and the IO left a little note next to the stamp saying '2walkin' or something similar. I guess that won't be an issue if I am walking back in on SETV?

  9. Hi there!

I am an Aussie, I have been in Thailand since October 2016. So far in that time I have used two tourist visas back to back and 8 exempt entries with extensions staying the full 60 days at a time.

I am just wondering what the friendliest embassy would be for me to go to considering I have a lot of exempt stamps.

Hong Kong was simple the first time I got a tourist visa but am wondering if it will be more strict now.

Phnom Penh through a visa agent was another idea I wanted to pursue.

I hear Vientiane is one of the friendliest but seems busy.

Does anyone have any suggestions or think I will have issues getting a visa because of my time staying on visa exempt/extensions?

    Cheers!

Your entry is valid until 11:59 pm on the Admitted Until date on the entry stamp. You can extend on the last day. In fact (although definitely not recommended) if immigration is closed on the day your permission to stay expires, you can even apply on the next working day without penalty.

    Thanks a lot, great info.

    Cheers

  12. Hi guys, a little unrelated to the current issue here but not sure where else to post.

My visa exemption stamp is saying valid until 20th October, does that mean I can leave Thailand no later than 11.59pm on the 20th, or do I need to get out of Thailand before the 20th?

Also, if I can be in Thailand on the 20th is it possible to extend for 30 days on the 20th. Or should I go on the 19th to extend? (I know the 20th is riskier but im just wanting to know if it is possible to extend a visa exemption on its last day.)

  13. So I ended up changing my flights for quite cheap to Myanmar. I now leave with time to spare to get the embassy for a thai visa. Do you think it would be better to try and get a cheap flight maybe to KL then back into phuket(as that is where im staying) to avoid the don meung airport immigration? Maybe it is worth the extra 2500-3000 baht.
