  1. My friend based in Australasia has a business based in other cities in Asia. What they do in HK (for example) is have employees from IT/TELCO and Oil/Gas companies that are based outside Thailand on their payroll. They pay their wages/tax/get them work permits/visas/and keep them legal in HK although strictly speaking they are not working for the company that pays them. Basically the contractor has outsourced the payroll responsibility etc so their employees are paid. He now wants to bring this business to Thailand too. My question is would it be allowed here? Can these contractor staff be got work permits and it be affordable? He thinks he will have 20+ of these contractor staff at least and the cost of employing 4 Thai staff per foreigner will make things expensive and problematic.

    Any thoughts?

  2. I am new in Pattaya and was astonished how low property prices have dropped. I was offered these 3 three yesterday from a friendly expat broker and they range from around 31,000 THB sqm to 37,000 THB sqm. Seems like a good time to invest because prices have got to rise later this year. If anyone wants this broker guys contact details PM me.

  3. I am living in the Philippines having moved from Thailand last year. I am entitled to comprehensive health insurance with my job. The policy in 2009 that was selected was with Blue Cross but I have been very disappointed with them. They query every claim and nearly all claims have either not been paid or I have to fight hard to get thru. I am 54 and want a health insurance that covers almost everything health wise. In 2009 it was found that I have a blood sugar problem and Blue Cross threw that out saying it was a pre existing condition. I had no history before of this. I had skin tags removed in 2010, they would not pay this (no previous history again). I needed some vaccines (upper respiratory pneumonia) and they would not pay that.

Ideally I would like a medical policy that's cashless and one that covers nearly all eventualities. Should I stay with Blue Cross in the hope that second year is better? Or if not who shall I move to? I would also like an annual comprehensive check up provided free too.

  4. I have a couple of questions that some British Thaivisa members can help with...thank in advance.

I am a British subject living since 2005 in Asia. Before that I had 28 uninterrupted years working in the UK (nearly all as a teacher in state schools). I paid my tax, medical contributions and council tax until July 2005 when I left the UK. Since then I have paid no contributions there. I still remember my National Insurance number in the UK. I am in my mid 50's.

    1) I visit the UK twice a year now; can I get treatment (for free) in UK hospitals? If not how do I make contributions so that I can now and when I retire in the future use UK hospitals for free?

    2) Am I still entitled to the monthly state pension from the UK government? What age must I be for me to be able to claim (60 or 65?)? Should I make contributions now to the UK to enable me to receive the state pension in the future?

  5. I live in the Philippines. What is the best way to pay my Citibank cc monthly payment from here? If I wire money to my Bangkok bank a/c it's quite expensive. There is a local Citibank office here near me in the Phils but they wont let me pay my Citibank cc card bill there as they say my card is set up by Citibank (Thailand). I took the cc out when I was in Bkk.

  6. 'All the language you need for travelling/working or living in Thailand' by James Higbie. This excellent as new set (never used) contains an introductory cassette tape with pronunciation guides and beginning phrases included. There is a large comprehensive textbook available in the box set. The ISBN no is 974-202-035-3 and barcode 978742020354. It is distributed by DK Book House and bought from Central Dept Store.

    Make me an offer.

  7. I worked for 4/5 years in Thailand (Bkk) from August 2004 - 2009. I am trying to recover my tax for first 2 years (allowed due to UK/Thailand tax treaty). I received 4 months worth of tax back but the tax authorities are now ruling as I had 2 contracts (changed with same Thai employer as I was promoted) that I cannot now get the remaining 20 months tax back. Can anyone help? I am prepared to pay on a no win, no fee basis because I don't want to lose anymore money on this. All the paperwork is available and the tax authorities have everything.
