  1. ,we shouldn't hijack an interesting thread and it's clear you and I could have a good discussion. Unfortunately you are a long way from the 500 posts required to enter Bedlam (semi-private forum) where this could be carried on. So let's just leave it at that. :D

Agree :D Anyway, I didn't know such a forum existed within TV :o

    Sir Isaac Newton

    post-27262-1141656136_thumb.jpg

    "Nature and Nature's Laws lay hid in night;

God said, 'Let Newton be!' -- And all was light." (Alexander Pope)

  2. Strings theory is a beautiful mathematical theory which has nothing to with reality! Otherwise could you tell me what did it achieve since the standard model of particle physics? Zero.

Nothing to do with reality? I suggest you do a little more research into it and its' implications. It's still a virgin field, not like particle physics so one can't say what has it achieved but rather what will it achieve. If it (string/M-string theory) indeed can be fully understood and formulated then the "Unified theory" will be complete. Remember, laws often start out as theory until proven.

Actually I should put this to the Bedlam forum right along with the chaos theory thread. Interesting stuff.

I know this off-topic. But I believe as long as this theory can not derive a measurable physical quantity, such as the mass, electrical charge, or the spin of a particle, it remains just a mathematical curiosity. Where is the connection with reality then?

BTW I don't know what is the Beldam forum.

  3. greatest brain, Steven Hawking

He was also at the top of my list of great thinkers until I started to do a little personal research into string theory and discovered Edward Witten. Probably few here will have heard of him but those interested in really abstract physics should take a look.

    post-566-1141641782.jpg

"Edward Witten is so softly spoken that his voice sometimes threatens to drift away completely. His desk is a jumble of papers and his blackboard a mess of equations. But his hushed words come straight to the point and are infused with understanding and passion.

Witten's quiet manner belies his status. In his role as de facto scientist-in-chief of string theory, Witten, the Charles Simonyi professor of mathematical physics at the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton, is undoubtedly the heir to Albert Einstein's title of greatest living physicist. If Einstein were alive today, he would probably be a string theorist, engaged in a remarkable, but still very controversial, theory that claims to explain absolutely everything around us.

As personal opinions go, Witten's make other scientists sit up and listen. His ideas in the development of string theory are legendary.

"There is no question of the extraordinary quality of Witten's intellectual achievements," says renowned physicist Roger Penrose in his latest book, The Road to Reality. "Where Witten goes, it does not take long for the rest to follow."

  4. Chances are that you do use it but not consciously when you go shopping (If I buy 5kG of this how much for 1kG). :o Of course it all depends on your field. I use algebra nearly everyday for one thing or another and calculus maybe once or twice a month. Not a fair comparison I realize since I work in nuclear Physics. :D

You don't really need Lie Algebra when you go shopping, do you? :D

  5. No, I don't believe that education is overrated. I agree that it is not the only way to gain knowledge or to achieve success in life. However we should also remember that standard education requires many years of commitment, hard work, sleepless nights, and exams. At the end of each level, the student receive a diploma or a degree which proves to the world that he has passed successfully written or/and oral examinations in a specific area of knowledge or expertise. This of course does not necessarily make him more intelligent than the other people. But when it comes to achieving a particular task or asking for an expert opinion, I believe that rightly the priority should be given to the person with the highest education in that field.

  6. I would have thought the general level of education was painfully clear from the content of the posts without having to go to the bother of a poll.

Not necessary true. I believe most people are here just to relax or have fun, and also we shouldn't forget that English is not the first or even second language for some of us :o

  7. CMCool, a post doctorate may not be a degree, it can be research or some combination of coursework n research. phd, though, considered to be the highest, is always lower than the post doctorate work

To my best knowledge, a postdoctoral work is a full time job at a university laboratory or a company and doesn't involve any coursework. Therefore in my opinion it shouldn't be considered as an educational level.

  8. Somebody said SQ flight attendants get booted out when they reach 28 yrs of life.

A friend who used to date one of them told me - in the contract it says when they are 30 the contract is for re-negotiation. Meaning, if they were good, some may become crew's cheif on staff on a flight.

    Why I'm not surprised :o

  9. My Thai GF has been granted a Schengen Visa to visit her sister in Holland.
I'm not love lorn or pining for her, its just that she said she would call and hasn't. I worry a bit and just wondered if Thai ladies were in the habit of just disappearing......
Yep, at the time of the post about the Schengen, I was not aware of the other man in her life. Imagine that, she didn't tell me the truth! Quelle surprise. :D

I thought it was just a visit to her sister.

So, no deception on my part intended, just wanted to stick to basic facts rather than boring you all with the whole story.

When did you know about the other man? If it was before her trip to Europe, then why do you expect her to be in contact? In the opposite case, how could you possibly know about him if as you said have never been contacted since her arrival to Holland? Your whole story doesn't really make any sense. Now I am suspicious about your real intentions or you are just trolling.

As you have clearly lied to us and seem to be amused about it, you don't deserve any of the advice and sympathy from the people in this forum who genuinely wanted to help you :o

Hope the mods will deal with you shortly.

  10. Talking about SQ economy class, I can't see how it is so much superior to the other Asian airlines. True, the stewardesses in their outfit are cute :o, but that's all I think. Honestly I find the quality of the service at the same level as the others, if not less in some areas.

  11. ...

My Thai GF has been granted a Schengen Visa to visit her sister in Holland. Whilst she is there I would like her to be able to come see me in the UK. I know the UK is not part of the Schengen agreement but I was curious as to whether it was possible for her to apply for a visa at the British embassy in Holland? Will the fact that she has a Shengen help in her application for a UK Tourist visa?

Or will she have to wait until she gets back to Bangkok and start the whole, drawn out process at the British embassy?

    ...

    :o

  12. The main actor was crap :D Obviously the guy never played footy before in his life! No elegance or body balance when on the ball :D I'd have preferred to a have a real world footballer, such Robinho or Ronaldino, as actors instead :o The Newcastle general scene wasn't too bad though.

Did it end where I thought it ended? (knockoff dvd, so can't be certain)

    Yep...

  13. I'm pretty sure she's fine as she has a sister and friends over there. Now a Thai lady always calls back her family: Have you checked with them? If you don't know them, then you weren't close enough to her and hence just forget it man! Really can't see how a man expects somebody's wife to be in touch with him on a regular basis! I wouldn't like it myself if I were the husband. Would you?

If I said what I want to say, I'd be banned, and probably rightly so.

Can't you put it in a "polite" way? :o
