  1. Thank you both.

I went to the shop on Lamphun Road because it was easier for me and the directions were quite explicit.

He replaced the mirror in a little over an hour, while I had lunch at Laila Biryani next door, and sticky rice and mango, also next door on the other side.

    100 baht for the replacement.

Android box with the rights apps and you can watch anything, just the cost of the box , most recent for a friend was 880 baht.

Which apps are you using these days?

I am interested in installing the newer apps for TV, movies, etc.

  3. A little off topic but close enough : has anyone found any no-sugar no-caffeine drinks around here.

The only one I can find consistently is Coke no-sugar, but it is loaded with caffeine.

Even a concentrate that I have to prepare will work.

As an aside, I find it amazing that Thailand has such a huge diabetes problem but companies have totally ignored diabetic needs. There are also a growing number of people, like me, who would prefer to avoid sugar in things like coffee and soda but cannot find suitable alternatives.

  4. To the original poster - Colgate has several whitening products, one or two with charcoal, that may work. They also have pastes with various salts, even tiny balls for an abrasive effect.

To those suggesting peroxide - I have spoken to a few dentists, and all of them recommend against it. In tiny quantities it may be okay, but even that is questionable. Dentists say that peroxide kills all bacteria and brings about changes to the bacteria in the mouth that can lead to other problems over time, such as severe halitosis.

  5. I used the Visa Europe foreign currency calculator to check visa conversion rates. But in the last few days my saved link takes me to some other Visa location, and I have been unable to find a satisfactory calculator by searching.

I tried downloading the Visa Travel tools app, but that didn't download either.

Does anyone have a link they can post ... to an official Visa calculator?

    Thanks.

  6. There is a TCL model that is highly rated by U.S. reviewers, including CNET.

It shows up on the 10 or 8 best lists of several reviewers.

They call it the Series 6 models, and the specific model number is 617 I believe.

Anyone know if the Series 6 is sold in Thailand, and in 65 inch size? A specific model number will be even more useful.

Do they  have Pana TV as well? I am looking to buy one.

    Where is this plaza89?

Plaza89 is on the old Lamphun road, the big trees road. You can Google it . I don't know if the store near it has Panasonic.

Super Cheap probably does carry the brand. They have several brands. The store is near the bus station.

From the 11 turn into the frontage road as if going to the bus station . Go past the bus station turn and turn left at the next traffic light . Super Cheap is immediately on the right.

  8. Thanks everyone for the advice...appreciate it.

Here's some information that may be helpful to others in my position:

I did go to the large independent near Plaza89 yesterday. The sales manager was pleasant and helpful and, at first glance, the prices were good also.

As an aside, I have 3 Sharp units and they are the quietest units I have ever come across. Guests tell me that they have to look at the unit to see if it is running. They were from a store called Super Cheap, near the Arcade bus station.

I decided to pay them a visit and found they have a large selection of brands and VERY good prices. I bought a 12000 BTU Sharp, and later that evening discovered that Big C has it on sale also - for 3400 more.

Anyone looking for an aircon might want to pay the store a visit. They have other stuff too, but I did not look in any detail so don't know if the prices are good.

  9. I am looking for an airconditioner (aircon), typical size and specs, in Chiang Mai.

Turning to the Internet for some help I came across an older ThaiVisa thread that recommended going to independents instead of the big box stores.

None were listed, except for one unnamed store.

My question is: does anyone have a recommendation on one or two of these independents? I am not going to do intensive price or spec comparison. When I find a known brand with specs I need and a decent SEER then I will buy it.

    Thanks...

Sounds like I'll just go with ceramic tiles and a couple of rugs ????

    Thanks for the feedback

I have also seen tiles that look like the cement floor pix above.

You may want to look around and see if tiles like that suit your needs.

  11. In keeping with the encouraging news coming out of Immigration, I should report that it took me about 10 minutes to obtain a reentry permit on Wednesday.

They did not even check all the papers I had attached that I could see. I went in the afternoon but there were still many people seated in the hall.

  12. I used to buy Kingsford starter fluid at Rimping. It works fine with the local charcoal if you know what you are doing.

I have never seen Kingsford charcoal in Chiang Mai. I think I have seen it at Foodland in Pattaya. If you go south you can drop into the store and check.

  13. Thanks...I have used CR Saddlebags before.

I have a large unit and I need to try out the holder to be sure it is of sufficient size. Most are made for phones and won't work.

Which is why I want to actually try it out in a store.

The issue with Lazada is they don't give enough information to be able to figure out the specs. Also, many of the products they carry are of dubious quality and I don't want my unit falling off.

I will keep looking for a local store .

  14. I am looking for a motorcycle accessories store which stocks holders for GPS units.

I have tried to search the forum because the question was probably answered before but the Search function is not intuitive.

Maybe there is a grouping of stores which carry such accessories?

  15. Anyone know if the Brachy procedure for the prostate is done in Chiang Mai.

And about how much it costs here?

A friend needs it and Bumrumgrad (sp?) in Bangkok is quoting him US 20000.

This seems high to me and I will let him know if the cost is similar or less in Chiang Mai.

  16. Well, according to poster HullyGully above he opened an account with a minimum of fuss. Only the ID card needed.

I will give it a shot once I get an ID card. But I sure will not jump through hoops if that is what they want.

If HullyGully remembers the name of the person who opened the account for him that may help - maybe.

Don't go to their Meechok branch, they have the same difficult attitude if you don't have pink card.

They are not welcoming to foreigners unlike Bangkok Bank. I prefer Bangkok Bank because their staff is more accomodating towards foreigners unlike CIMB.

You are probably right. I have a couple of Bangkok Bank accounts, and the staff at the branch I use is very friendly.

However, if I am to set aside $25-30000 for visa purposes, which now looks inevitable, then I would like a decent return. And I would also like to avoid double taxation (or the paperwork to avoid double taxation).

I understand that it is not a lot of money, but to me it is almost like a game.

Bangkok Bank return is very low compared to CIMB. Also, the latter has some accounts where they do not deduct tax. Hence my interest.

The staff at CIMB Central was horrible in the sense that three different people gave three different views. In the end they just said 'sorry', wasting quite a lot of my time, and angering me - which is not a good thing in Thailand.

I will give the Meechok branch a try. If it doesn't work, then so be it.
