  1. Gyms are included in the list of businesses allowed to reopen in Bangkok from today  (Sunday).

That's according to a report today in the Bangkok Post.

Hopefully authorities in Chiang Mai will take their cue from that.

I prefer information from the Thai site....  ddc.moph.go.th

You know they won't push the figures up if they don't have to.

Same site. DDC stands for Dept of Disease Control.

Where are you seeing 38 or 35 cases in Chiang Mai? I saw 30.

  3. A few days ago I saw a report in the Bangkok Post that mentioned in passing that $100000 worth of health insurance is required of tourists coming from risky countries. The report was actually about the "little ghosts" returning from South Korea, and that many had been denied boarding by airlines because they did not have the insurance. The report went on to say that the next day the matter was clarified and Thai citizens did not need the insurance. But it is still required from visitors.

This is the only reference I have seen about this particular requirement. Has anyone seen a report about the health insurance requirement? If so I think all of us will appreciate a recap, or a link.

If it is indeed true then visiting another country is a big risk at the moment, because no one knows which countries may be declared risky. Even more dangerous, no one know how an airline counter will interpret the rule.

  4. I want to avoid the road work on the 118 in going to Chiang Mai and need to choose between the 1089 and 109. The 1089 is the road that goes through Thaton and Fang, and 109 branches off the 118 to Fang.

Which is easier with a decent road surface?

    Any info appreciated.

Driving to CR early morning is no problem, traffic is light.  Last two times, came back via Thaton.  Great route & only about 25km longer than 118.

Have you- or anyone - taken the 109 to cross over to Fang? Google suggests this route from Chiang Rai to Fang.

I am not interested in the shortest but the more convenient route - easier to drive.

Any info on the 109 vs the 1089 will be appreciated.

  6. Dr Morgan speaks good English and takes time to explain things. I haven't really tested her diagnostic abilities but I assume it is on par with other decent physicians.

However her prices are high. More specialized doctors than her charge 200-300 baht at their private clinics. Dr Morgan manages to at least double this. Even a simple consultation runs 600 baht or so.

You may want to keep this in mind.

For vaccines, there is a vaccine clinic somewhere in the Sriphat hospital complex. I don't know the exact location but you can probably find it. They even have a poster on the road.

They will be 100-200 baht cheaper if it counts.

  7. You will need to call a central Dell number for Thailand. They will in turn give you the whereabouts of a Chiang Mai technician. There is no dedicated Dell service center in Chiang Mai.

You can try getting Dell's number from one of the stores that sell their products. That is what I did. It may also be available online.

I ended up getting the job done at Advice, instead of the Dell authorized techy. It was much cheaper, and I had a good feeling after speaking with Advice.

Did they say you had to get a copy of that report and put it in your passport like the other TM30 reports and updates?

    No, nothing of the sort.

When I was dismissive about the idea of reporting when staying with a friend a couple of days she seemed to understand and shrugged it off herself.

I was there a month back for the same reason, but no one said anything about not having to report.

  9. A visit to Chiang Mai Immigration yesterday produced somewhat different results than I had expected, and not unpleasant ones.

This was to update the TM30 after a visit to various parts of Thailand. But I was informed that after visits to places within Thailand, no update is necessary upon returning home (if the address remains the same).

I was under the impression that this was one of the main issues in the TM30 uproar of a few months ago, the necessity of having to report one's address upon returning. And that the matter was being reviewed by the government. Is this a change, or just a whim on the part of the immigration official, I wonder? To be safe, I asked two persons there and both affirmed this policy. To be safer, I requested them to update anyway, since I was already there.

They did say that if I was staying at someone's house when traveling then reporting was necessary by the person I was staying with. There is no change in this.

  10. There is a sewing shop in Warorot market that I have used for something a little simpler than what you need.

Directions? The market being the jumble it is, I wouldn't even know how to begin. Best I can do is that it's on the second floor. Go up and find the clothing stores, and ask one of them. That's what we did and got directed to the shop.

  11. Now that the 'where to buy cheese' topic has been laid to rest, perhaps we can move to the olives topic?

Any good places for black olives, the European variety?

I bought a can recently at Makro, European origin. Unfortunately it was more like American olives, very mild.

So any tips will be appreciated.

  12. Went to Gekko Garden for the first time to get the cheddar mentioned above.

I thought there would be cheeses on display but I didn't see anything and asked, upon which I was provided a laminated sheet with prices listed.

The point to note is that they do not give a list of the specials. It was only when I asked that I was given another small laminated sheet.

  13. That's what I use now, Bons mocca. There is also a Vietnamese packaged coffee that is good. They don't say it is a mocca, but I think it is similar. I buy it in a restaurant.

I prefer Peets- Major Dickason or the mocca - but what I bring back lasts a month. Peets is a specialty California coffee, for those not familiar with it.

  14. I see there is no entry for podiatrist in the doctors' list.

For someone who has experience, what would be the next best alternative for a foot issue? I see a Dr Chanakarn mentioned for sports related issues, which may work. There is also another doctor at Rajavej mentioned for foot/ankle surgery. Any recommendations? I don't think surgery is called for, but some kind of support may be necessary.

    Thanks.

  15. I did not know a place like this existed in Chiang Mai - or anywhere for that matter - until I saw this thread. I have been getting my equipment from outside, but there was no need for it.

I visited the Hillkoff store next to Amway yesterday, and was amazed at the collection they have.

Unfortunately, they don't have a cafe so I cannot try their coffees before deciding which one I like. So it will be a long process of buying the small pack and trying it out. Maybe I can decide after one or two attempts - either way.

I generally don't like Thai grown and packaged coffees, so it could be that Hillkoff will be a place for occasional visits, to look at their collection, or buy something if needed. But I will certainly try a few of their more recommended coffees.

In the meantime, if someone has extensive experience with their product, do they have a coffee that is a mocca, or resembles one?

Last I heard, Dr. Siri no longer attends that clinic, and can be seen only at the newer wing of Maharaj Hospital. Are you certain you saw Dr. Siri, and not the doctor who replaced him ?

    ~o:37;

When I walked in I asked the desk the doctor's name and was told Siri.

And I was chatting with a CMU student while waiting- she referred to him as Siri.

  17. To close the topic by giving my choice, I ended up going to the private clinic of Dr Siri. He is a highly regarded Chiang Mai Univ, and the associated hospital, dermatologist and teacher, according to what I read on the web. His clinic is past Thapae Gate, in the direction of traffic, maybe a couple of hundred meters. There is a pharmacy next to it.

It was crowded with patients about 6 pm, but he goes through them quickly.

He seemed competent enough, and I will probably go to him again. The charge was 320 baht for the consultation, and to put some acid on a small skin tag.

Why not go to their private clinics where the cost will be 1/2 the price?

Do you have contact information for the 2 doctors at RAM mentioned above?

I searched for Dr Vachiraporn but didn't find anything.

  19. Is the section on dermatologist s updated in the Recommended list above? Or maybe another recommendation?

I just want a looksee but obviously it has to be someone with experience, who can tell an innocent mole from something that will knock me off my feet.

  20. 8 hours ago, Genericnic said:

    Thanks for that.

The price you mentioned for the CT scan was about the same as I paid at RAM in Chiang Mai about 4 years ago if I remember correctly.

Sounds like you have some great insurance. I'll be contacting mine soon to find out what they cover. My best guess is around 80% since I am out of network. If I went back to the US and did it in-network they would cover a lot more.

    David

You may be in for a surprise. If it is typical US insurance, they will not cover anything overseas.

Some (Kaiser) will cover emergencies overseas, but they define emergencies narrowly. Your case doesn't qualify as one.

Consider getting it done in the US if you find you don't have coverage.

Yes I do it every two months, but have a very edible houss aswell.

Chaindrite 40 is the one you need. You dilute it 40times.

I just buy a 1 litres for 300bt and it does me twice.

I just measure out in a yoghurt pot then fill my sprayer to 6 litres and go.

40 is really for the soil as its very strong but i use it everywhere, posts, eaves, floors.

Be very carful with it, use a mask and goggles and gloves. The fine mist can blow in your eyes and mouth and will quickly have you sweating and overheating.

The sub floor pipes you have can only be done with a pump its a loop and needs to be under pressure to create the spray. Really best to pay the pros for that job and will cost you 1400/1600bt.

Personally i am not concerened about termites under my concrete floors as long as the perimeter is well soaked.

Chiang mai pest charge around 8k a year and includes 12 visits. We used to use them and yes they did need a call because they dont keep records. We stretched our 12 visits out over two years.

The best guy is from CR pest(could be wrong initials) office down Thapae somewhere., knows his stuff but clueless about his own safety.

Spraying Chaindrite on the soil around the house will control ants as well?

And what about plants. Is it safe to use around plants, because there are many around the house.

    Thanks.
