I wonder if cats can tell venomous snakes from harmless ones?

Local language Tagalog is 30% Spanish, if you can speak Spanish or English, why would you bother with a local dialect?
Because of the other 70% might make it mystifying? :)
I speak some Spanish, and yes, there are Spanish words in Tagalog, but it really didn't help me that much when I was there. In the old days, you could find people who were Spanish speakers, but they are not taught it in schools anymore. The Filipinos may start picking up Chinese soon for all we know. :) I think it's already common in Cebu.

We have three in the Colonies: 1. Recycle. 2. Landfill. 3. Compost.
The distinction between the last two is lost on most people, but of course there are plenty of things that won't compost or recycle.
Now translate that to Thai.

Not attacking you, but I've noticed that guys tend to think just because a girl has good bone structure and isn't a lard bucket that she's "special". It's always a good idea when assessing a potential partner in life to imagine she has had an accident and her face is all smashed in, and would one still want to be with her for her personality?
The old saying that beauty is only skin deep is very true.
PS, I do know a previously very attractive woman that had a face altering accident, but luckily for her she was also beautiful on the inside ( she was married to someone else when I first met her so not a prospective beloved ). Still married to her husband from before the accident.
I don't know, my late wife had a "potato face" but a heart of gold. Still miss her.

A work permit or teaching license? I believe there are different requirements.
Your employer may be able to game the system.
There are websites for English teachers in Thailand and may be better places for straighter answers.

Come on UG, the site didn't say that. Just like it didn't focus on the south of Thailand. But if people want to make decisions about an entire country just based on that, more power to them.

I guess we have a choice of sources.

Asking for anecdotes is very entertaining, but statistics are more accurate.

But as every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way, the stats in different categories yield different results.

Because even without violent crime there is still crime.

OP, do you have a specific instance in mind or are you just indulging your imagination?

I know Japan is "to expensive"! We were talking about the women.

For the second, go to Japan without a nanosecond of hesitation.

I've been to both (and not just Pattaya and Subic!).
I prefer Thailand over the PI in most categories.
Of course, English is widely spoken in the PI, but that's its only positive point over Thailand, as far as I am concerned.

And the only way to do that is to learn each guy in the relevant context. As everyone is different. Not make a generalisation from one situation and apply to the whole country. The OP hasn't even shown signs of acknowledging any positive things about Thai men. Which suggests he had preconceived thoughts which are not open to change. So why bother with the thread to begin with? Just to try and ignorantly confirm these thoughts based on incredibly restricted experiences members have had with the odd Thai guy?
To be fair to Hiro (unless "he" is a pseudonym for the friend he is asking about) is that he likely hasn't dated any Thai men, so is probably viewing their behavior through a glass darkly.

I don't see anyone calling Japanese flawless or even better than Thais.
People get abused everywhere. Some statistics which I assume are from the US:
1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
https://ncadv.org/statisticsI think Hiro is trying to understand his friend's predicament.

Thank you. BTW it seems the general opinions of Thais/Thailand on this forum is rather low. Then why would so many farangs wish to settle down here for good? Is it because everything's cheaper? Or the women? I get the feeling from people's response here that Thailand is not a safe lawful country. Personally I would only be here for vacations over a short time.
I don't know if it's that "black-and-white". You gotta know what you're dealing with, the general character of the country you're in.

I don't know Thais well enough to generalize. Sorry. I'd just say that I haven't met a Thai who is as strict about their personal integrity as Japanese.

Would you care to elaborate? Having arrived in Thailand not too long ago. I do have many things to get used to in terms of culture. I have yet to gain deeper understanding of the Thai mentality, which to me right now, is a complete mystery.
Well, Hiro, are you Japanese? Correct me if I'm wrong, but a typical Japanese person doesn't want to think of himself or herself as lazy, untruthful or unreliable. I'm not saying that most Thais are lazy or liars, but I wouldn't count on that....
