These days I always choose the 'booze' option.

The golden era in my home country, England, passed well before it did in Thailand.

For me, Thailand is the better option, by a country mile

I can understand that, but for me Australia remains a better option by far than Thailand.

Only the Thai women draw me back nowadays,  a reasonably quick and convenient direct flight to BKK and still a good enough exchange rate;  but I wouldn't want to rely on that as an expat.

I have heard..wink wink...that if you pick one just before their shift is about to end, then arrange to meet them after, and you can give them a little more. She makes a bit more, and you save a bit more..win/win.

I don’t know myself, but heard it from a ‘friend’. It works for m...er, him.

"Their shift"  usually ends when they get you to Bar fine them.

Unless you want to hang around until 4.00 am then the TG is too drunk /tired to be of much value to you.

Seriously, if you can't make the BF decision before 9-10 pm night time you've missed the boat.

The choice is yours really, do you want to booze along into the wee hours, or catch an early enough BF so you can enjoy a full night of sex action ?

Hahaha...you do it, I have only heard the term...555,  shh, my mrs can read this, I ‘d have to explain to her as well..?

300 to 500 is reasonable,  1000 as in the Nightwish Bars on Soi 6 Pattaya is damned extortionate.

    18-19 baht is possible.

They are forecasting our dollar at 68 cents and longer term, around 74 stable. The Aussie dollar is going to get pressed and if it gets to these levels, many are going to suffer. I am now pressing the wife to open back up her Accountancy business, I am rebuilding our rice barns to make way for rooms to rent to farangs that come to train for boxing. I bought over a few million at 26 not long back and now leave my income alone in my Australian bank account,  hoping to trade again at better times.

Australia is pretty much a basket case now.

I feel for you mate,  seriously I don't want to be at the whims of currency exchange and the vagaries of the Thai government and authoritarian BIB.

I'm on a good wicket here in Aussie land, too much to lose if I relocated to LoS; but I'm sympathetic to those who do so.

Not really, it’s their job...not a great job granted, but there are far worse jobs for the money than that...they would look at treating them badly by NOT bar fining them...??

I think you're going to have to explain what a Bar fine is 555

Although I do realise that its consensual, having sex with a female in exchange for some paper, is rather treating them badly

When I moved here 15 years ago, I did it 100%...Nothing left in my home country.....

Money moved to Thai banks, the Thai Stock Exchange (SET), bought a house (in my Thai wife's name) and opened a business....

If I then had listened to the doom and gloom 'experts' on Thaivisa, I would have done none of the above....

I still have (more) money in Thai banks, SET has been good for me, have 3 houses today + some land plots and the business is on it's 15th year and still doing okay....

My point is, that if you move to a new country, you have to do it 100%...You can't live in two countries and have to worry about currency fluctuations...

My currency is (for better or worse) Thai baht....and I never translate local prices into to home country prices....

And before anyone ask...I don't receive a pension from 'home'....Probably entitled to one...but not worth the trouble for a small amount.

Hear a lot of my friends complain about bad exchange rates those days....The very same guys that told me, that I was stupid to put all my eggs in one basket.......I am not gloating.....but almost...:coffee1:

"have 3 houses today + some land plots and the business is on it's 15th year and still doing okay...."

The only farang in existence who OWNS land in LoS ?

A rather quaint way to look at it. If you made USD1500 at old rates; that would be what, B54,000 at 36 to 1?  No matter the current USD to THB rate, you are still making B54,000, are you not?

There's no shortage of Condos for sale in LoS, selling one as an "investment"are you ?

    Good post, thank you.

I think when we reach a certain age we try to turn back the clock. That was certainly my initial attraction to Thailand and the new place i bought a home at in the US. Turning back the clock isn't necessarily cheaper; certainly not in the US, but it is comforting to many, including myself. I don't want to go, go, go all the time. I don't want my "space" invaded". I want to be free to do as I like. If one doesn't have an extraordinary attachment to self, Thailand is a great place to do just that

Well I have to give you guys the 3 tiered chocolate Cake !

Seriously "Free" as a farang target in Thailand, what a joke.

first came to thailand in 2016, being really smart we changed money at sydney airport, got around 22 bhart  per dollar, we thought we were rich when my mate and i arrived  in bangkok ,back then , compared to now, i can not see many things that are that much dearer, we , as newcomers paid then a hell of a lot for pussy, we definately got ripped of, you still can get 25 bhart for aus dollar now so i think its still good value here now, when i moved here permanately , i bought heaps of cash and changed at 32  bhart, put it in the bank, so in reality, now i am way in front, just back from aus and there is no way that i will ever go back there, its bloody expensive and there is a law for every thing, at least you are free here, i pay no rent live on our farm, we clear 150k bhart a year and we live like kings on my old age pension and i can not see any thing changing here to i check out, no i am staying

150 k baht a year, so you farm what ?

    Hmm.

    Lots of questions.

There are many reasons why an expat might want to or feel "forced" to leave Thailand.

Expats that earn baht here would be in a different situation.

Short answer -- the baht down to 20 would put fire under my arse.

As an Australian yet to be domiciled in Thailand,I'm concerned as many are with the unrealistic currency exchange rates.

Over the last couple of years the Thai baht generally hangs between 24 and 25 baht to the Aussie dollar,  which for my agenda is too close to the 20 baht limit.

My own dual pensions allow me just over 100,000 baht at the 24 baht per Aussie $, as a monthly lifestyle support,  and no way would I draw from my reserve funds just to live in LoS.

IMO a 4 baht margin is still to close for comfort,  yeah I know many of you will sneer and state that 100,000 monthly is easy going,  but my point is that's where I want to be consistently if I was ever to relocate to Thailand.

So at this point in time I'll continue to holiday 2 to 3 times yearly in LoS,  while monitoring the situation.

    1. Cheaper at some point than living in the west  (Cheaper at some point than living in the west. Period.)

    2. Warmer climates (Not if you're living in Florida)

    3. Easy to find a companion no matter hold old or what you look like  (Condescending comment. What will you do if you divorce your wife? Come back to Thailand and look for another? :whistling:)

    4. You have already retired and this is all your pension can afford (Condescending comment. When are you going to get it through your thick head that not everyone who retires here is living on a SS check?)

    5. No place to move back to, no education or job skills (More condescending comments.  Assumes everybody is in the job market.  I have a Master's degree, am a lifelong student, can afford to live in any state in the US)

To the people that come and experience living in Thailand and move back home

    1. Realize the third world is not for them  (Thailand is not a third world country. It is a developing country. Hello? How many times has this been pointed out to you?)

    2. Educational opportunities for children is no comparison

    3. Family, friends (Why didn't you include this criteria for people who chose to live in Thailand as well? Or did you mean to say white family and friends?)

    4. Modern conveniences of the first world  (Like what? Cable TV, High speed internet? Netflix? Internet banking? Supermarkets with produce from around the world? That's all available to me and I live out in the boonies.)

    5. Did not burn any bridges and have the education/skills to make more money  (Bragging alarm starting to ring)

    6. Corporate incomes possible with 401k matching, bonus, etc. (Bragging alarm getting louder. You forget that a lot of people over here have done the wage slave, 9-5 monkey, 30 years in the trenches of soul destroying mind numbing corporate ass kissing and they would like to enjoy the fruits of their labor without being interrupted by some smug punk who thinks he's got it a-l-l-l-l-l-l figured out.)

I lived in Thailand for 10 years then returned back to Florida USA, so you can bash me all you want.

For those interested in why?  (This is at least the third time you've started a thread to tell us why. It was interesting the first time. But the third time? Not so much.)

    1. Wanted kids to get US education (We get it BW. Schools in the West are generally better than in Thailand.)

    2. Had pretty much seen and done everything in Thailand that interested me 100 times over.  (Careful. You or your wife might come to feel the same way about Florida in time.)

    3. Tiring of the water and electric going off for no reason, scams, police checkpoints, etc.  (Let's have some balance here: school shootings, hurricanes, bridge collapses. Better a police checkpoint than getting shot for driving while black or Thai, right? Cops here use a hellava lot less deadly force than the cops in FLA, right?)

    4. Already happily married so no interest in sitting on a barstool spinning yarn  (Insulting inference that everyone over here whiles away their days sitting on bar stools. Didn't you tell us you spend a lot of time at the local country club? No drinking? No spinning yarns? Seems like you enjoy spinning your fair share of yarns on TVF.)

    5. Still at an age could go back to USA and move back into corporate America with high paying salary, benefits, insurance etc.  (Bragging alarm is really becoming deafening)

    6. Quality of life is just much, much better for the entire family  (Very subjective criteria.  Different strokes for different folks, like you said BW. For example, is your wife's social life better in Florida than in Thailand?)

Why do I get the impression that you're not all a happy individual ?

Been here for over 20 years, when i 1st got here immigration was never a hassle, fees were low, didn't have to do 90 day reporting, and many things have changed for the worse. Paid 35 baht for a kilo of moo etc. The price of food is now basically comparable to the U.S. so no saving there.

So now I can get u.s. citizenship for my Thai son,  and get him in a good school in the u.s.

Tired of all the hassles, and will be leaving in May. Probably will never come back here to live, just visit.

I'm hearing a lot of this from more of my old friends who've been living there over the years.

Not if your house is a home, not just a roof over your head.

How long for when you tire of the place, or neighbors ?

I believe renting in Thailand is the way to go, you can't own land, you take a high risk if you put it a Thais name;  and chances are if you do want to live in Thailand sooner or later you'll want a change of view.

I have farang friends who've paid out for condos, town houses; and houses and regretted it.  I also have farang friends who rent and don't regret it.

For many years I lived in a service apartment at a 100+ room hotel. I was finally asked to leave because -- among other reasons -- when my Thai girlfriend used to arrive at the hotel without wearing a bra, it created too much of a disturbance amongst the hotel's other guests and employees.

Putting a deposit in one shortly!

My TG warned me not to have too flash a motorbike in LoS, according to her the cops are happy confiscating farangs motorbikes, not that I've ever heard of it before.
