And yet I am sure many of those broke Thais still manage to go to expensive clubs, sit there around their booked table in their cool black clothes with their friends, all looking at their phones, with their personal bottles, all trying to look rich, take highly beatified pics for instagram doing the V sign pose and the gang hands...and then go back to their single room slum in a drab Bangkok suburb.
Even amongst the expats Ive noticed a tendency to talk big but be in reality earning what in my mind is next to nothing and living in squalor. Im sure they mostly have more than 50 baht in their accounts...but probably not much more.

The bar fine has to go negative for me, because these days I am the relatively good looking one and most of the bar “girls” have gotten fat and old...I now tell them what my bar fine is.

Was just about to plan my next visit for January to March when I checked BKK air quality...bad...and thought about the ever worsening nonsense/harassment/hassle from immigration...and had second thoughts but wondered where else to go....and then I found it in this thread....Da Nang...cant wait...goodbye Thailand.

So they want more first time visitors cos they spend more do they, presuming they want repeat visitors less. Then they say the first time visitors will become repeat visitors....the ones they seem not to want. I guess they didn't really think that one through....once again.
I think the real problem Thailand has isn't the scams, the xenophobia, the strong baht etc etc...its that they're just really really DUMB.

Pattaya is for the large part very safe, but obviously a huge drinking and party culture gives it a sort of "anything goes" feel, and the authorities tend to have a reactive approach in which cover up and indifference rule.
The slapdash nature of court rulings here don't improve the image either. Crooked people get away with murder (literally in some cases) in this environment. I hope the attackers here are given the maximum punishments in this case
You mean a 500 baht fine?

Shirts are often pulled off or torn off in a fight or violent attack as people may have their arm up to cover their heads and are at the same time being pulled and pushed around, as well as being punched and kicked and worse.

The three main killers everywhere are diabetes, heart failure and cancer. if the first two don't get you then the third probably will. we all have to die of something, for thais it tends to be cancer and this might actually be despite the pollution, smoking and drinking people have talked about. it could be their life expectancy is quite high and because there is a lower chance of diabetes and heart disease then its cancer that finally gets them.

It has everything I need, and would be very surprised if I ever left it. The best decision I ever made ... was packing up and putting the USA in the rear view mirror, and moving to a country filled with beautiful people and places. I would consider it a great favor if the haters would just read this ... and move along. This posting is for like minded people who love life in The Kingdom, and respect Thai People.
Well how lovely for you...but maybe open your tiny American mind to the possibility that there are lovely people in many other countries, that there are great views everywhere and that people can have a great life elsewhere without the excessive number of negatives and annoyances that have been worsening here over the years. Thailand isn't the only country, there are many others, get out a map and have a little look.
And one more thing, people can be critical of Thailand and especially its immigration process without that implying that they hate or disrespect Thai people or Thailand in general. I am sure most posters understand that, but obviously not all.

The strong Thsi Baht must be a significant contributing factor IMO.
* Grocery shopping here is very expensive. (AUD to THB in my case)
Crazy prices at the supermarket. High tariffs on anything imported already meant prices were never cheap when the THB was weaker anyway.
* I can buy most things back in OZ much cheaper. And that's with supermarkets/shops there paying much higher rents and salaries.
* Eating out is now the same price as in OZ and lower quality and quantity on the plate!
* I am considering Vietnam again. Would be great to do some part time work as a retiree for pocket money. Cannot do that here. Did that when in Nam.
* Feel like a convicted person on probation/parole reporting every 90 days and TM30s for any trips I make! Thai authorities seem very contemptuous towards us as well. Almost feel ashamed to be a farang here, like a second class citizen. Ok. rant finished.
Agree with all your points and have been running down my Thai bank funds and will not be bothering with extending my visa again next year, im tired of the petty minded, time wasting, abusive and ever more complicated immigration process as well as your other points.
But on Vietnam, as I understand it, the long stay visa options are quite limited so not sure it will be good alternative quite yet apart from for short visits.

Before I moved to retire here, I was with my g/f visiting Chiang Mai on holiday. I became seriously ill with suspected appendicitis. Rushed into Lana Hospital and went under to have it removed. It actually turned out to be diverticulitis! They did ask if I had insurance which I confirmed. I had travel insurance through using my Lloyds debit card to pay for the flight. Long story shortened. Every time the bill racked up to 100,000 baht then the hospital asked to be paid so I gave my g/f my debit card to pay up. Got released then 2 days later had to be rushed back in with sepsis due to a leak. Same procedure with the bills as there was no need to worry as I was covered. On arrival back in UK put in the bill with all the hospital paperwork and was paid out in 2 weeks.
So I am at a loss to understand firstly why people do not take out travel insurance? It is not expensive at the end of the day!! And secondly, why do the hospitals let these bills mount up? If the person has insurance there is no excuse. If not then just give the very basic aid and send them away!!
Any idea what led to the diverticulitis? Maybe diet related...were you overweight at the time? As I understand it a good diet and healthy weight are the best ways to keep the intestinal tract healthy and hopefully avoid those kinds of conditions.

If it's not a silly question, why do you want to come to Thailand at all? There are countless other places that don't put you through this nonsense.
its not a silly question at all. i think its because he wants to go on holiday for a week in pattaya and wants to make sure he has the correct visa and health insurance.

that should be true and very good travel insurance policies cost very little. mine is less than 2000 baht annually and its coverage is far superior to the ones over age 50 non OA visa applicants and extenders now have to buy, but for 25 times the price.
so although what you said should be true, when the required insurance has to be bought from government approved thai insurance companies at an obscenely inflated price, the statement becomes patently false.

To make it simple for you, I can afford it but thanks for the advise ha ha ha
not only have you paid 10 times the going rate for a not fit for purpose insurance policy (so now you need to buy a real policy) but the clock on that policy is now ticking and you will now not get a full period on your non OA visa as once that visa is finally issued, if it ever is, the extension will only be up to the expiration of the insurance policy.

as he said, and as ive explained before, the issue is basically the current account surplus. this surplus is a combination of high exports such as tourism and agriculture etc plus imports kept low due to xenophobic protectionism and high import taxes. so in a way it boils down to thainess. either fix the thainess or the laws of supply and demand will eventually fix the thainess for you and it wont be in a nice way.

we all get the need for some kind of insurance but youve just paid 30-50k for a policy that is grossly over priced and provides very poor insurance. for a tenth of the cost outside their forced scheme you would have better coverage by far.
to make it simpler for you to understand, youve just done the equivalent of paying 1000 baht for a coffee at starbucks when the normal price in starbucks for the same coffee wouldbe 100 baht.

Why buy the insurance to get the OA when you can get the O without insurance? Didnt you just spend 30-50k for nothing, especially lf you cant even get the actual visa you wanted?

Actually, I think there are many other reasons.
Ive been taking my money out of Thailand recently (thanks for the 10% gain Thailand, did you know you have somewhat enriched this white westerner?) as I have decided the yearly non O based extension is now more trouble than its worth and the reason is the TM30.
The day or two at Chaengwattana, the time getting there, the time taken to get the paperwork from my bank...etc etc...it was bad enough already but now that I will need to wait at desk B for hours for the TM30 receipt, obtainable in no other way, worrying about rejection for some petty reason, plus other added complications I wont mention, has added up to too much for me to bother with.
The insurance requirement apparently wont apply to me anyway, and no way would i buy it it did (hey guess what I dont like getting scammed) but the need for a TM30 receipt will and ive decided its the straw that is breaking the camels back in terms of nuisance, nonsense and wasting of my time by the immigration idiots.
I will therefore be spending far less time in Thailand once my current one year extension has expired. But thats OK, I will close the door on my way out and my lost revenue will easily be made up for by a couple of hundred Chinese and Indian tourists and I am sure the Thais will love their manners.

Where is the actual TM30 receipt obtained from?
And if like me someone is on a non O one year extension based on retirement, but come and go and stay in hotels which change everytime I am here and during my stays, do I keep needing to obtain fresh receipts? I am aware the hotels do the online TM30 for me, but that still leaves the need for the actual receipt, especially when it comes to the next extension. Anyone know? Thanks

The reason the Bhat is strong is that exports vastly exceed imports and the reason for that is unfair tariffs and protectionism. Just look at the prices of imported items such as wine.
If Thailand is able to tackle its xenophobia, absence of ethics and get that you cant dump your exports on the world but then do everything possible to prevent imports, then its surplus will narrow and its currency will moderate.
But I believe they cant get over themselves and their petty, greedy, xenophobic and narrow minded way of thinking so in the end the currency will only weaken when exports collapse due to their high prices or natural disaster such as drought, or when foreign countries decide enough is enough with Thai protectionism and hypocricy and apply their own punitive taxes on Thai goods, or when the domestic debt pyramid comes crashing down on their thick heads.
So when it weakens, finally, it will weaken a lot and in an an uncontrolled manner, a sort of forced loss of face reminiscent of 97.

Are you saying that even if you made a print-out of a screenshot that proves your TM30 was filed in the IO TM30 database, that at CW they STILL want you to provide them a TM30 receipt before considering to process your application for an extension of stay?
And that you need to get that TM30 receipt within that very same office?
That would indeed be absolute madness and everybody treated this way would be rightfully angry about it!
That was exactly my experience

Note that even if you are TM30 registered online, done by a hotel or condo admin or yourselves, when it come to extensions of stay etc the immigration office will still require a TM30 receipt and this is seemingly only available from the immigration office. When I was last at Chaengwattana in Bangkok there were atleast two hundred angry looking people queued up at desk B to obtain this receipt.
Why I can only see great things ahead for Pattaya

The OP sounds like one of the many falang real estate agents, I recognise the tendency towards bubbly optimism no matter what the facts say, the desire to seem big and successful (that businessman, that polo club etc).
Personally I think Pattaya is in danger of becoming a ghost town. If the recent collapse in clientele of the bars and restaurants continues then we will see closures and once that process starts it can be self feeding...a death spiral....fewer places to go and less buzz will mean even fewer visitors and then even more closures and then even fewer visitors. Who will want to visit Pattaya once all of its buzz has gone? Even the Chinese wont want to. What happens when the hotels start going bust? Imagine Pattaya with half its sois boarded up and empty...thats the future its headed for.
Success breed success. Failure breeds failure. I know which of those looks more likely.
