  1. Apparently it's only worth $16. Hardly worth the effort.

    http://domainestimator.com/www.directfromthailand.com

Ha ha what a crap valuation site.

I happened to be looking at this site http://asiapropertyworld.com and put it in for a valuation. Result? Also $16 and the accompanying text said that there were no pages indexed by Google. This is a large site so I checked that as well by putting "site:http://asiapropertyworld.com" info Google with the result "About 199,000 results".

Best of all you get the same answer of $16 for ThaiVisa.com If George wants to sell based on this I'll generously round it up to $20 laugh.png

www.directfromthailand.com is a nice name but as has already noted something is only worth what someone else will pay for it.

  2. I had a good Western xmas Dinner at the Art cafe some years ago .Turkey ,sprouts ,veg etc with a glass of wine for under B300 ,if i remember correctly .

Art Cafe's sister restaurant Hide Away cafe do a very tasty, traditional 3 course lunch, will set you back about 400 baht. Nice garden setting and you won't leave hungry.

Why people pay up to 2,00 baht in a so called high class hotel is beyond me but each to his own.Not sure how they justify the price they charge but obviously they don't have to.

Hey Sparkles, where are these places?

    Thanks in advance.

I had heard that The Chedi did a great bash last year so I made an enquiry a couple of weeks ago and they came back with 2,800++ w00t.gif

I'll be giving it a miss and looking for something a bit cheaper

  3. Just to get things back on topic ..... have you tried the free property listings sites such as the ThaiVisa property pages?

If it is exposure that you want then a few hours spent listing your property on half a dozen or such sites may pay dividends.

An alternative method to select an agent is to do a Google search for what ever phrase fits for you (e.g. house for sale Chiang Mai!) and contact whoever appears on page 1 of the results. Of course this doesn't help with the quality of the agent but it would mean that your house is listed with the agents that are most likely to viewed by potential buyers.

  4. If a farang is involved then you will need a work permit, 4 Thai employees etc etc blah blah blah.

Politely suggest that you are not involved in anyway what so ever. At least not in any observable way biggrin.png

She then should be able to get the paperwork purely as a Thai doing a bit of business

  5. Why not list your requirements here? Price, location, number of bedrooms, big or small garden etc etc.

I'm sure you will get more than one PM with suggestions. I know of a few myself biggrin.png

Edit : there are good and bad stories about all of the real estate companies everywhere (I found raintree so rude I walked away from them). Often the seller will set a price and the agent will get 3% commission plus the difference between the sellers price and the actual price which encourages greed on the agents side.

  6. Our requirements are quite simple - we are looking for somewhere comfortable that sells a good selection of Thai food with one complication - the local election bans alcohol until midnight.

There will be about 10 of us and we are prepared to travel because we want to hold the party on Sunday and we want to have a drink or several.

So any suggestions for somewhere within easy travelling distance from Chiang Mai City would be gratefully received.

  7. CheckInn99 on Sukhumvit Road between Soi's 5 & 7. The house band do a good mix of stuff and take requests. They start about 8:30.

I'll also second the earlier suggestion of Aphoteka which is another venue I enjoy.

  8. 60 litres of beer, food, fancy dressed staff - all sounds very good indeed but there hasn't been any mention of orange whips yet so I thought I would throw it into the thread....

    Orange Whips

    ... done it laugh.png

P.S. For those who don't know they serve an excellent orange whip for when the beer runs out (or any time for that matter).

  9. Any local builders merchant should be able to order one for you. Assuming that you don't speak enough Thai to do it yourself I would suggest that you carefully explain exactly what you want to to a fluent Thai speaker who can then go with you and place the order. With luck it will be in a sales book with a picture for you to look at before parting with your cash.

  10. For extra protection why dont you buy a small insectecutor. lightsup with a blue light, cost less than 200bt from the supermarkets and especially at night it does its job well.

you can get some monster insectecutors the likes of "the black hole" I think they fry bigger flies, moths, flying ants.

Bought one at Tesco and was disappointed with it. I sat right beside it after dark and the mosquitos preferred to bite me rather than go to the blue light.

I found one a couple of years ago (I think it was in Tesco's) that had a fan in front of the blue light so that it sucked the mozzies to their death. A lot more effective than just a passive light.

On the subject of fans, if you have no screen then a fan blowing at the open doorway should keep most of the insects out (they are weak fliers and can't fly into the wind).

  11. Don't know what to make of your comment (O'37) about "there are no cherries" in CM. Back in the US, the loud, powerful crackers are called "cherry bombs". So you say there are none here. I've seen other people having them during the 4th Jul and New Year celebration, they must be somewhere around to purchase.

Just ignore orang37 - comments like his devalue the whole forum.

Visit Warorot market near the river and inside the main market building you will find a few stalls that sell fireworks. They may have what you want.

  12. The White Lotus on Loh Kroh just about opposite Cherry Bar (up near the moat end of the road). Don't be put off by the location - good and clean massage.

If required than I believe that there are plenty of "extras" available from staff in other near by establishments.

    "Banana buffing" fantastic phrase thumbsup.gif

  13. One of the bars you could visit is Check Inn 99 on Sukhumvit Road between Sois 5 and 7. Great atmosphere and music but no view of the fireworks whatsoever!

Never been in there amigo, I'm a big fan of live music&bands! What time do they come on&what type of music is it that they play?

    Life is good!

Sent from my iPhone using ThaiVisa app

A mix of music both old and new by a Philippine band. I guess that they will have some sort of special on for New Year's Eve.

  14. I'm looking for a general / annual health check up in Bangkok. Currently no known issues but being over 50 I like to keep an eye on things.

Living near to Asoke but willing to travel. All hospitals will do a check up but any suggestions based on experience gratefully received smile.png

  15. I'll be popping up to Sisaket to visit some friends for a few days and thought about catching the 10:05 train from Bangkok which is scheduled to arrive in Sisaket at 18:40 however, my past experience with the SRT suggests that the actual arrival time will be somewhat later than advertised.

Can anyone please give me an estimate of the real arrival time based on their own experience (my friends never use the train so they have no idea) ?

If the train regularly arrives a couple of hours late then I might as well spend the night in town and meet my friends the following day in which case are there any recommendations for accommodation close to the train station and/or one of the local bars (Livin' in the Past and the Cuckoo's nest seems to be the favourite bars) ?

    Thanks.

  16. Just to complete the return journey....I caught the 14:10 departure frm Hua Hin station at 14:20 which only had 3rd class fan carriages. Very busy because I made the mistake of travelling back to Bangkok on Sunday when a lot of weekend visitors to Hua Hin also return to Bangkok. The carriage I was in was full with a couple of people standing most of the 5 hour journey to Bangkok. Hot and humid but for 44 baht a good deal. Worth doing once just for the experience but I doubt if I would do it again. A couple of Thais sitting opposite struck up a friendly conversation in broken English (but still far better than my Thai) and offered me some of the food they had packed for the journey. Typical Thai generosity which makes it such a joy to be here.

IMHO the minivans are down right dangerous, the VIP airport bus is good but (for me) uncomfortable, the 3rd class train was a one off experience which leaves an expensive taxi at 1,500 - 2,000 baht one way or the air-con train mentioned by WPCOE above or the standard buses of which I have no knowledge but perhaps I will give them a try on my next visit in a couple of months.
