Hi. I am not disagreeing with your advice "...you should never start working without a work permit...", (you know a lot more than I do about visas and work permits), but in practice, almost all teachers begin their career without the correct visa and work permit until their employers have time to process all the paperwork. I believe that it is tacitly accepted by the authorities, but of course, strictly speaking, it is against the law.

Yes, most teachers start working without proper permits, but it is not accepted by Thai authorities.

Last year an American teacher named Rickey McDonald was killed in Immigration Detention Center by fellow inmates who did not like Americans.  None of the news stories said why he was in IDC, but most likely he did not have a work permit.

Thais are now encouraged to call and report foreigners working illegally.  Marc Ryan, a two-time Olympic bronze medalist cyclist from New Zealand spent four days in IDC and was deported from Thailand last year after someone reported him working as a cycling trainer without a work permit.

  2. "Currently, as of the start of October, the government only recognises certain visa types to re-enter the country. But, as the evidence shows, even if you are eligible in theory, there are limited entries of people allowed back into the country. For example, the holders of Thailand Elite visas have been ‘officially’ able to re-enter the country since the start of August. But in practice, according to a source at Thailand Elite, not more than 50 people have actually successfully returned up to date."

Now he has a choice whether to come in on Elite from Singapore or to try for an STV from Singapore.  Currently STV's are not available from 'unsafe' countries either.
    Hope this latest info helps.

The first STV flight scheduled to arrive in Thailand on October 8 has already been postponed.

The linked article does not say, but October 1-8 is a national holiday in China.  Schools, most businesses and government offices are closed, including foreign embassies and consulates.

Also, the first three STV flight were reported to be from China and Scandanavia.

No, not the only country in the world.  A few countries already have done it.  Thailand will however be the only country in SE asia to force people out.

People are gradually being forced out of the Philippines.  Tourists can stay in the Philippines for 36 months without exiting the country. Some single guys that chose to retire in the Philippines on tourist visa extensions are now having to leave the country as they reach their 36 month limit.

The American in the video left the Philippines after 36 months and chose to go Turkey.  He still has an apartment in the Philippines even though he doesn't know when he can return.

I can attest to the fact that many members of US, UK and Australian nationals have acquired extensions based on both marriage and retirement with proof of 2 x 40/65K transfers since the Embassies stopped issuing Income letters.

Some enter VE or TV and obtain the Non O with only 1 x 40/65K transfer, then the extension with 2 x 40/65K transfers before this amnesty.

You are deliberately ignoring the fact that local immigration offices were asked to show leniency to applicants from Australia, the UK, and the US in 2019 due to their loss of embassy income verification letters.  Leniency was only for 2019, not 2020.

I know a bunch of guys that don't have degrees, and yet they have full time jobs here as teachers making big money.  I would love to know what their visa status is.  One pothead described university as ''some strong sh*t'' and the other one is ''doing his degree online''.  Do they kidnap people or something.  How do they get away with this.  One muppet I knew started showing a traditional Thai culture booklet around the classroom and saying the women have nice breasts.  The same guy would randomly tell everyone to close the workbooks, say it is too boring and waste the lesson watching music videos.  What visa is that?

There is a foreigner teaching English in Thailand who openly admits on his YouTube channel that he is a former meth addict.

Does Taiwan make you do a 90 day report or similar (genuine question)...

Thailand is the only country I know that makes you do this but I've only lived for any period of time in Singapore where we had to report address changes within 1 week otherwise no need to inform them of anything.

Last year in Vietnam, a law was passed requiring tourists to get an extension from Immigration every 30 days via an agent. The law went into effect July 2020. So someone in Vietnam on a 90 day tourist visa would have to report to Immigration twice. (See video).  There is no retirement visa scheme in Vietnam so people had lived there for years on tourist visas.  I have second-hand information that under Covid, tourist visa costs that were once $300 to $400/year are now $1500/year.

The Philippines allows tourists to stay in country for 36 months without leaving. Tourists must go to Immigration every 1, 2, or 6 months for an extension.  The 6 month extension can only be done twice, so most report to Immigration every 2 months.

The Philippines has a retirement scheme, but most retire there under tourist visas.  Under Covid, those approaching 36 months of stay on tourist visas are leaving the Philippines, terrified to be on overstay with Duterte in power.

Have seen a few bus convoys going down beach road Jomtien. Usually have motorcycle escorts, so perhaps some government types (won't say 'workers') on a "fact finding" junket off to a resort for a few days.

    I could be wrong

The bus passengers have just arrived in Thailand and are being escorted to their hotel for a 14-day quarantine.

That is not a major change. Those with permanent residence status have been able to get COEs for months. The only change is to give them priority over most other categories of foreigners. Anyway, there are few of them outside Thailand, so the impact is minimal.

You are talking about legal permanent residents.  According to Richard Barrow on Twitter, Channel 7 said that the new proposal is for condo owners (owners of a permanent residence).

  10. Immigration offices are allowed to ask for any information, like an embassy proof of income letter, they deem necessary to support an application.

Last year, it was reported here that starting in 2020, Phetchabun Immigration would only accept the 65k baht monthly method for new retirement extensions from those with embassy income verification letters - and the income had to be from a pension.  Those without embassy letters would only have the 800k baht lump sum deposit as an option.

A large Thai travel agency closed its business with effect from 31st August 2020 because it doubts that tourism will return in 2021 and even in 2022 it will be minimal. They are laying off 300 staff.

Asia World travel agency closed July 23 with the same forecast.

“Asia World has had no business for the past four to five months and no income because of Covid-19,” said founder and managing director, Stephen McEvoy, in a note to staff. “It seems that tourists will not return to Thailand for a long time, which could be in 2021 or 2022, but nobody can be sure."

One possible motive (or at least result) for the now widespread refusal (of 2 months @ 40k deposits) is to force people into the agencies, increasing the income at the IOs. Other commentors above have mentioned as such.

Immigration's fear is that most people who normally use ME Non-O visas will stop transferring the monthly 40,000 baht into their Thai bank account as soon they receive their extension.

I presume from 27/09, he mentioned it in his latest video. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp3SQp-gytNc4cQ5iqrZv5Q

In that video he says that his student visa is good until March 3 of next year.

For anyone interested, here is video of him traveling from Vietnam to Thailand on March 3.  So his ED visa is only valid until his 1-year entry date.

Tastewise Texas is far superior but the bad news is they do not have many outlets outside BKK at present.

About 15 outlets in BKK all at PTT gas stations and 1 at a PTT in Khon kaen but the real business on Texas goes through grab and they have loads of promotions. Mexican wrap is very good.

There are five Texas Chicken locations from south of Pattaya to Rayong,  with two of the five in Rayong.  One of the Rayong locations is on mall property with entry from the street, not inside the actual mall.

I read through that, thanks, there's useful tidbits.

I just found this in Phuket News:

"The "automatic visa extension" continues until Sept 26. In order for short-term visa holders to remain in Thailand after that date, they must apply for an extension to stay before Sept 26.

For that, they must have a letter from their embassy or a letter from a doctor (in case illness is preventing travel). The 30-day extension, if granted, will become effective from Sept 27."

    So now I'm worried again.

I did receive a letter from the US embassy requesting an extension and this was included.

"we wish to refer to the Global Level 4 Health Advisory issued by the Department of State on March 19, 2020 which advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel."

But that was dated March 26, @ubonjoe said it's too old. I requested a new one on Monday, no response and I've seen in several places/posts they're not issuing those anymore.

My plan is to apply for the extension tomorrow.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,

    DS

I think you are fooling yourself if you think that you will always have the option to get a 1 year multiple entry from Savanaket or wherever - you used to be able to get them in the UK and other countries , now you can't.

As you can see I have used various different visas and am just calling it as I see it, not condemning those doing what I did, or wishing they would be locked out of Thailand so I could have it all to myself on my one year visa (like many on here)

I wouldn't be surprised if the multiple entry Non-O was just limited to citizens of ASEAN countries or eliminated altogether.
