Not insane - they just need a taxi.  In Bangkok, I've never been successful at negotiating a tuktuk below 200 even when I know for a fact a taxi or Uber is less than half (granted I gave up after a few tries, I just ignore them now).  The farang beach towns are all pretty well locked down by taxi mafia, so 200-500 baht (depending) is going to be the rate you get, again, I gave up on them past a few tries so perhaps it's possible to find someone who will negotiate a reasonable price, but I never did.  Same with Vientiane, a tuktuk is going to be 50k kip or more and I once got it down to 40k!  Facts of life in the tourist zones - legit tourists don't realize how absurd the prices are and set the floor for everyone else.

so much truth here....i took tuctucs first week in chiang mai ( before i started using grab and uber).....200 , 300 , 400 baht quotes for 50 -100 baht uber rides.....and they WILL let you walk off without giving you fair price . Pride and greed......thank god for uber and grabtaxi

So looks that is not only farangs who get dumped by their Thai beauties (when the piggy bank is empty)....it happens also to the locals !!!

Looks that globalisation and "modernisation" has finally caught up with Thailand !!!....very soon the Thai ladies dynamics, that did attract most of us, will be no better or worse,  then the dynamics of the average western female that made most of us initially avoid them !!...of course cannot generalize on either side, but looks like it's catching up here.

after wandering around asia the last several years , it looks to me things are heading that way . Facebook and social media 24/7 telling women to quit being victims , dont need a man , alone is wonderful , blah blah . Many asian women admire western women and culture from afar ( sadly enough) .....had another thai girl tell me how great anjolie jolie , is , looks , ect....the end is near !!

  3. Usa passport holder . Used 30 day exemption on arrival , and 30 day extension expires soon . Anyone had recent good experience making border run by land ( i dont care where to but must leave outta chiang mai ) ? Staying overnight or 2 , or same day either way....normally id fly but considering bus/car to see the countryside.....Thanks in advance !

Actually, there are quite a few  good rental options available in areas very accessible on foot and/or easily served by the red song thaews, like the Santitam area, along Huay Kaew Road and the Nimman area.

ya if he start bottom nimman and walks all of it a zillion places for rent , some way cheaper than advertised

The problem with guides is they can't resist the temptation to steer you to things, where they get a commission.  This is especially true in the home rental business.  Saw a guy end up paying 30,000 a month for a four bedroom house in Hang Dong, when I think he would have been a lot happier in a 10,000 per month condo closer in.  People have to make a living, but you would be better off just talking to some local expats, wherever.  Was at a dive bar the other night and there was a sign on the wall advertising a 2 bedroom house near the airport for 5000 per month.  If you know the MOAT, you are already way ahead of first timers.  Some will say you need a car, others say you must rent a scooter, while others do fine with neither.  Acting like you need someone to hold your hand is a good way to get taken for a ride.  Some look at 10 apartments, and still pay too much, and still have complaints.  Others spend an hour finding a place and stay ten years.  Having specific questions is much better than, "I am new, help me."

    That's a very perceptive post.

I doubt that the OP will get any better advice than that.

But hey, TITV... no telling what gems of wisdom may follow.

    Good luck, Tex.

and ill add get on the facebook groups here in chiang mai...several rental groups available.....many cheap deals....also use uber initially...u just cant beat it when your new or ever for somepeople.....but walking around going to front desk , bulletin boards of places look like youd want works too.....you can avoid agencies andworth doing so if u put in the effort

Do you think prisons are like hotels that have 3, 4 and 5 star accommodations? What crime did your friend commit that earned him over 6 years jail time? Maybe he deserves to be in there. For example, if it involves pedophilia or drug dealing I`d have no sympathy at all. It may be possible for your friend to serve the rest of his sentence in a Swedish jail, could be worth making inquires with the Swedish authorities.

priceless...of course some prisons are better than others , impossible to be completely identical and equal....as far as you not having 'no sympathy' im sure the guy in prison and the o.p. wont lose any sleep over it . After all , hes already been sentenced once , right ?  hats off to the op for making the effort to help his friend. Life changing stuff and could make all the difference

Sripat (the private service of the CMU hospital) will prescribe it---I know because I get it from there. They will probably require you to meet with a psychiatrist first, but that can be done while you wait, if you don't mind a long wait. This is presumably to check that you are not going to abuse it. My appointment was very cursory and short and refills have not required a further appointment. I find Zolpidem very effective, even in small doses, so I can appreciate why you are wanting it.

life changing stuff...gets a guys sleep schedule back ....beats whiskey !

I read this book after seeing it mentioned here ( 8 bucks on kindle ) ...the author made some bad decisions early on in thailand ( hookers , booze , business ) . One long party . When he ran out of money , alcoholism  (at the highest level ) led him to stay in thailand . He had offers for paid airfare home (eventually ) but kept the 'party' going . ...Sounds like the op guy here being deported had a one time productive existence in thailand , family , teacher , ect , but hit a rough patch as of late.....pretty different scenarios early on but same outcome i guess

  11. California is his best bet, they have social programs that beat all other states, people documented or not enjoy the same state social security bennies.........if he has a history of working, he will collect Social Security, however small, if he is a veteran, he can get 'some' benifits, unless service connected then he can get 'many'............I gave the guy a thousand baht about a year ago, a guy I was with knew him for years and said he used to write menu's in English for Thai Resturants, had a loooong history in Patts - but refused any and all assistancre to return to the USA   -  wish him luck.

im not surprised.....he had to have been solid working , liked guy at one time.....and those who remember have helped him since....for sure this guy worked long enough in usa to draw money when he returns.....i am starting to believe he might miss thailand indefinetly cuz its home now....sad story .....his kids would be eligible ( if they want) usa passport ? maybe theyll follow now someday

  13. Heard many stories on what a madhouse , long waits , and overall bad experiences at the local immigration office in chiangmai . I decided to use thaivisa agency for extra 1400 baht over doing it myself (american passport holder buying 30 day extension after using free 30 days on arrival ) . Great experience ! Walk in their office ( thai visa) give them passport ( 5 minutes total ) . Schedule next day appointment .Show up next day they drive you to immigration office ( nice perk saves a few hundred baht transpo fee both ways depending)....The immigration office looked like a funeral parlor , everyone miserable , completely overcrowded , Had to be a few hundred foreigners there ( 930 am).... thaivisa agent sits with you 5 minutes and you walk up give them your passport....10 minutes later , they call your name , pick up your passport and your outta there !  Money well spent and ill be using them again in the future
