  1. DOES IT HAVE A PRESSURE TANK AT THE BOTTOM? This is the key question. A pressure tank is a must for domestic pumps. It introduces elasticity to the hydraulic system. the pressure tank acts like a spring and smoothens out any pressure variations arising from opening or closing a faucet. There may be one (pressure tank) but may be defective (diaphragm ruptured). Water is incompressible so the opening of a faucet makes the pressure to drop rapidly. The pressure sensor sees that and gives command to the pump to start. After closing the faucet, almost instantaneously, the pump cuts in again and so on. My strong suspicion is due the pressure vessel. Make sure to choose the right diameter should you decide to replace it.

Previously, the pump would engage about every two seconds for about a second, IIRC, and now it gallops away 2x per second.

Firstly, is this something to be worried about, other than the annoying noise it makes?

    Worry!

The thing won't live too long in such extraordinary state.

What kind of pump is it? Best specify exact model nr.

Does it have pressure tank attached at the bottom?

If yes then so called "water clogging" could be the problem.

If you want to buy a new one:

for two story townhouse a 255 Watt Mitsubishi with pressure tank would do a good job.

  2. who goes on a Baht bus trip with £3,000 in his pocket?

Anyone who doesn't trust what is held out as a hotel safe, or hotel security. Myself included.

This thing troubles me everytime I stay in not so expensive hotels or serviced aqpartments. The problem is even worse with Airbnb or Flipkey accomodation. How can I secure my cash? Difficult question. My answer, carry half of it with me and the rest stashed somewhere in the apartment hoping for the best for either case. Expensive hotels can be trusted either in the room safe or the hotel reception safety boxes. This is truly a problem.

  3. How does/can it work ?---OP

it's something like ----------------How do women defy the laws of physics?

The heavier they are, the easier to pick up!.................................coffee1.gif

Here is also the aerodynamics paradox: 'The more streamlined the girl the more resistance she offers'.. Seriously now, if two reasonably intelligent people cannot communicate fully then the breakup is inevitable. Fortunately many contributors to this forum shared with us their success stories where they started with zero linguistic common ground and then one, or both converged and bridged the gap. Verbal communication is a fundamental need. Lack of it cannot sustain a mutually gratifying coexistence.

  4. A 20% reduction is the expected response. Maybe next year 50%? Every other day supply? This has happened in the past in my country, Cyprus. It was fairly easy to cope with because every house or apartment block is supplied with domestic water indirectly. That is, the town water goes to a tank first and then from the tank to the various consumption points in the house. this is good because you expect the tank, 1-2 ton capacity, to fill up during the day of supply. I advise all those who live in houses to make provision for such a facility, a tank. Things are more likely to become worse and the 'direct on line' water may leave many a toilet unflushed.

    This is my opinion.

Of course very high skyscrapers have a pumping station anyway but 4-5 storey or single houses normally served by the town water pressure direct, might need to consider the next step.

  5. I am married to a Filipina. That means I am married to the whole clan. It is true that they are cute and pleasant and outward. Wonderful music and dance and that is the end of the fairy tale. I never felt safe in Manila. My wife does not want us to live there because she is afraid for my safety and from the begging attitute of her impoverished relatives who live in Manila. Ok, no Manila, but where can one go? The infrastructure in the countryside is non-existent. The wonderful scenery is good but one needs reasonable medical facilities and signs of 'civilization' so life can be bearable. You also need to socialize with someone on equal terms. The few affluent people are not to be found.

You cannot go alone on a deserted beach. It is dangerous even in the countryside. Unfortunately the people are not keen in serious work. It is a common practice to hire a maid even if your home is a 30 sqm shack. I do not want to belittle my wife's country but, sadly, my verdict on the Phil is a no, if I can avoid it.

  6. I visit frequently Bangkok and I always live in condos one month or two at a time. Last time I asked one of the cleaning ladies of the corridors if she had time for me and she said at 5 o'clock when she finishes work. For a two bedroom two bathroom apartment 65 sqm, she said she and her colleague will do it for 800. I had to agree because I was leaving the same evening.

I think, for regular employment (once a week for example) she would have made a less extravagant demand. My advise, approach the condo cleaners and negotiate.

2 bedroom 2 bathroom living room balcony in 65M2 how fid you turn around

You can find 50 sqm with 2 bedroom/bathrooms. Just look at any realtor agency in Thailand. DDproperty, for example.

One room 9, second 15, kitchen living room 30, two bathrooms 8-10 sqm. This or similar is a frequent occurrence in Thailand. You obviously are just an occasional visitor staying in hotels..

  8. Waiting on the cause....no reports yet of reasons for the crash.

I would not rule out an attack....seems too sureal.

If it was...then I suspect it is only the beginning.

If some terrorists moderate rebels shot down the airplane with some anti airplane weapon supplied by the USA, than we can start digging bunkers......

Lets hope it was technical problem or the pilots fault.....

Extremely possible to be a retaliatory act. As the commentator above says 'Lets hope it was a technical problem or the pilots fault.

  9. I do believe the govt now recognises the need for actual strategy not just talk but action. Trouble is that the masses will ignore all advice to conserve water. How many mom & pops do you see washing the street on their soi u charoens with a hose pipe everyday?... So wasteful, habitual and ultimately pointless

Very well said. Remember, drought is not an easy thing to deal with. Advanced countries like the US cannot find a solution for the western coast. Thailand is still a third World country with all the limitations associated with this status. Thailand has achieved a lot on many fronts. Thailand deserves some respect. There is no magic wand to solve the water problem. Thais are trying their best. Respect and encourage them.

  10. 30% of the energy needs must come from fat. That is food intake must include enough fat in order to satisfy the needs of the body, the brain mainly. If the fat intake is less than demanded by your constitution then this must be taken from the reserve fat you store on your body.

Normal cooking oil is fatty food, cheeses, butter fat on meat and other , all contribute to fat intake. The body needs a certain amount of fat and it utilizes the stored fat if not provided through eating. From what I read this is the commonest way the body loses fat.

  11. Everyone is allowed to proclaim and campaign for his religion. The Muslims do that, the Jewish do that, when it comes to the Christians, however, they must'nt do.Yes, Europe and the US have been traditionally Christian and trying to preserve this is not bigotry. If other faiths are so vocal in defending their identity and rights so the Christians must be able tro do so also. I cannot accept that Christians must be apologetic to be large in number, powerful and successful. Having said that this power must not be used to oppress or subdjugate. US during WWII has shown bravery, generosity and maganimity. US at that time (the greatest moment) was not shy to seek the help of the religion of the Nation without the uneasiness or guilt that would accompany such a display today.

Bottom line: Christians must have an equal right to be vocal in support of their religion like all others. Given the fact now, as it was in the middle ages, religion carries a political agenda. The US, in my opinion is more capable to protect the majority of the Americans if a Christian President is elected.

  12. Electricity in Thailand is dangerous at the best of times. First thing to check is the EARTH. There is a good chance there is no earth.

Then check the power coming into the property, see how great the supply is.

Then throw away the regular oven and go and buy a good size and quality halogen oven. They draw low power and if you get one with a rotisserie, cook

joints of meat really well. There is one that has a kebab attachment.

I know people will say " oh but the air con draws lots of power " and they are right however that unit is outside the house.

One should indeed check the earth. It very possible that the insulation of an unused oven to fail and result int an earth fault. If there is an earth fault relay on the main board or on the power point used then the trip would be instantaneous. If there is no earth fault relay a leakage to earth may be such to create the overcurrnt condition which will trip the circuit.

In my opinion overcurrent can be caused due to 'normal' overload or by leakage to earth. (if suitable earth leakage protection not present) Both cases are dangerous with the latter being deadly.

  13. All those wonderful expensive hotels offer, no doubt, an excellent brunch. Now for peop[le of lower stature can one recommend a reletively good place for one to have a decent brunch? I would like to expand the topic a little bit by requesting info about good buffet lunches, again not in top notch places.

    Thanks

  14. Bangkok has some of the cheapest taxi fares, for a major city, in the World. http://www.priceoftravel.com/555/world-taxi-prices-what-a-3-kilometer-ride-costs-in-72-big-cities/

You get what you pay for so I'm very satisfied with the taxi service in Bangkok.

    .

In addition, one can, on most occasions, find a taxi at the speed of thought. They are everywhwre and in abundance. They are inexpensive too.

There were instances where I was met with drivers trying to take advantage of the situation. Bad weather, rush hour etc, but overall they take you where you want to go and you pay the meter. Provided they understand what you are telling them then one will expect to be taken to his destination. .

Bottom line: Bangkok taxi drivers get the thumbs up as far as I am concerned and I have been using them since 1986.

  15. The pump cuts-in and out continuously. This means that the pressure switch turns on and off the pump. Water is not compressible and the pump discharge reaches cut-out setting as soon as the flow stops. When the fawcet is turned on a rapid drop in pressure ensues and the pressure switch turns the pump on.When the tap shuts rapid build-up of pressure shuts the pump down

Remedy: Introduce elasticity in the system by incorporating a pressure vessel at the pump outlet. This vessel consists of two chaambers separated by a membrane. On one side is nitrogen gas and the other side is the water.Nitrogen, being a gas is compressible. These c an be bought at any store selling pumps. In fact, the picture of a pump arrangement in a post above, depicts such a vessel. A final point, it is my advise, to use a centrifugal pump, which can operate with closed discharge. That is, in case the pressure switch fails to shut down if thwere is no flow, the head built up by the centrifugal pump will be manageable as opposed to a positive displacement pump which will maintain high pressure with zero flow resulting in possible damage In case such a vessel is incorporated the explanation of the on-off behaviour is that the separating membrane has ruptured..

Bottom line go to the pump store where you purchased the pump and ask advise about the pressure vessel. i live in a five storey block of flats and our arrangementt is that I had just described.

  16. What rubbish. I moved 4 times in the past 8 years and on each occasion the landlord has returned the deposit in full. In fact with my latest move the landlord suggested I shouldn't pay the last 2 months rent in lieu of returning the deposit. Don't condemn all Thais with your accusation.

For the OP I would expect that if the building is returned to its original condition then there would be no recourse to retain deposit or insist on leaving the AC unit. But the contract might say different.

I think, the behaviour of the landlord is determined mainly by the class of the apartment. An owner of a classy place in an expensive building, I would think, would act appropriately. He has more to lose if he gets a bad reputation.

I have always feared the prospect of losing my deposit should I decide to rent. I prefere serviced apartments for the six month periods I normally spend in Bangkok.

  17. Check the meter if it is running wild. This may signify undetected leakage to earth. Is earth fault relay compulsory in Thailand? This is a sinister case, if so, which may endanger life.

If you can access your meter do what others have suggested, switch on your appliances one after the other and check meter behaviour. If nothing suspect arises then it has to be some bleeding off to other consumption points outside your household. Since ac usage has not been noted to have increased then the notion that low gas maybe responsible, is not the case, I think.

  18. Yes Thais have a sense of humor if they see an old lady slipping on a banana peel

and fall over and break her back they laugh tongue.png

I think this is very unfair. Some stupid farang may laugh also. The colour of the skin is a major issue since the antiquity. In pluralistic America, I think, it is still a very sensitive and uncomfotable issue even today . You just can't joke wth someones colour if the person has the 'wrong' colour. racism is everywhere and it wont be eradicated. It is not so much a cultural rather than an internal issue inherent in everybody. The way it is manifested depends on the personality which means strengths and insecurities of the individual. Self control and proper behaviour, if not inherent, they must be taught.

  19. You do not move because you do not want to leave an issue outstanding and not settled. All you need is closure but at your own terms. You feel sorry for her and maybe you would really feel happy if she goes back to the protection and safety of her folks. Now, this divorce does not burden you financially. Try to give her some money, this will alleviate some guilt which may exist and also give her the satisfaction that a 'fair deal' was struck.

Give her what you can afford and I think things will come to closure.

This what I would do if in the same predicament.

  20. First time I saw the 'bum gun' was in the toilets in various airports at the UAE. Then I saw them in Thailand. I know that Muslim people are supposed to wash after toilet,a very good tradition/custom of course, hence the gun. I am not sure if it is a Thai custom as well or they install them in order to serve the all important and loaded people from the petroleum states of the arab world. I do not remember seeing them in Europe, though.

my question really is, is this implement a necessary part of the average Thai household bathroom?

  21. The first thing we learn about Thailand is to respect HM the King, the Monks and anything related to their religion. Thais are very sensitive on the above issues. Remember, people kill if you offend their Prophet. The Thai reaction to apprehend and caution this person is like a picnic in the park compared to what Salman Rushdie could suffer if caught.

I can understand the Thai sensitivities and I wish they catch that person. He seemed to be a youth so he might have acted stupidly rather than disrespectfully.

Do you really want us to give you an answer back to this post

    Yes, enlighten me.

  23. Migrant workers from outside the EU are being invited to become self employed on a tourist visa. The big question is why is this being allowed within the EU?

The question is valid. Why Asian people from so far who are not accustomed to cold climates? Why not 'poorer' Europeans like Bulgarians or Romanians, for example, who are familiar with the foliage of temperate climates?

-No direspect to the above mentioned Nationalities was intended- They are poorer by a sizeable margin compared to Finns therefore the payment would be lower. The terms of employment of the Thais, I suspect, are not going to be very enviable.

  24. He must be sick of being ripped off, so out to get his own back and make the driver sweat for a little while

I think this is the most likely explanation. I canot imagine that it was a calculated move just to save the taxi fare. The fact that he declined the use of the meter may show intend, but, I think, only for revenge and not to actually save money.
