Back then the Baht was much higher than 65 to the Pound.

Talking to my regular taxi driver he was telling me that if it wasn't for us expats he would be out of a job. The local bars and cafes round here also rely on expat trade as few tourist hotels in the area and the ones that are here only have chinese who don't patronise any of the local businesses.

I live in Pattaya, There's no Chinese that's true but also there's no massive queue of tour buses, no streams of idiots walking across Beach Road, you can get into a 7/11 and Family Mart! All the previous was paid for (at a discount) in China. None of the bars, restaurants (not on the tour list) have noticed any non seasonal downturn. The millionaire Indians don't spend anything anyway so who's left to put money over the counter?

I am a millionaire £, $ and Baht, I wear shorts, short sleeved shirts and trainers.
Most of my assets are invested and this is my portfolio value, I never had money years ago so don't throw it about now.
In fact my habits haven't changed as far as I can see, I prefer a beer (Chang) or red wine to cocktails and I can't see how going to a bar that charges three for times the price for my beer is being smart, I'm over 70 and have never been a poser, too late to become one now.

I was told many, many years ago " the most dangerous component of a car is the loose nut on the steering wheel!"

False. It's only tour groups that have been stopped leaving; individual travellers can still travel abroad.

I tend to use taxis to get about here (Pattaya) and use the one same firm for years.
Yesterday coming back to my condo O joked with the driver about all his millionaire Chinese and Indian customers. His reply about both groups was less than polite, in fact he said if it wasn't for the expats he'd have no work, no income to pay for his car and licences etc. So all you miserable (add own title) out there stop knocking your own group of people, it shows a mental health problem at very least.

Many, many years ago (I told you I was old) when we used to do visa train runs to Penang I went 2nd. class fan which had opening windows which were only closed at night. A couple of times I went during the burning season, it was like riding through the blitzcrieg! We all arrived in Butterworth looking like the cast from the Black and White minstrel show (told you I was old.) This burning is done all over South East Asia, until all the countries involved can come up with an effective solution nothing will, or can, change.

The whole system in Thailand is based on money being handed out to get round rules. Out drinking with a Thai colleague he said "you know what Dave Thailand has the best police force money can buy." The punch line is he's a senior police officer himself!

When I was here first, over 33 years ago I had to go to Bangkok from Pattaya every other day, no highways only the Sukhumvit, saw a dead person every trip, normally motor bike users.
Things haven't changed much at all, still no helmets required unless you're a farang.

Instead of simply focusing on internal issues for the lag in Thai tourism, we should give credit to other countires in Asia who have improved infrastructure and now offer vacation alternatives to Thailand, a choice is nice. This competition will no doubt prompt Thailand to become creative and compete for the tourist trade. That is good; Thailand will respond.
Of course the typical Thai response will be to put the prices UP!!!!!???

I've never read such a load of feeble notions on one subject. The train looks 1/3 empty yet this Thai guy bumps into someone using a mobile, you never see Thai's using mobiles in public!
He probably thought he was being very clever knocking the mobile out of his hands, didn't expect a slap to improve his manners, yes, not all Thai's are little angels either.

I live in Central Pattaya, I'm 71, been a motorcyclist all my life ( from 16.) I watch elderly white people ride on bikes and my blood runs cold.
I just wonder when they are going to die.
Sorry but riding a bike in the West is risky, riding like a Thai in Thailand is suicidal.

It seems to this guy that only tourists rob his shop, as we're told that most tourists are from Indie and China why should farangs worry!

In order to put points on their licenses first they have to have a license, which many do not!

When I first came back after retiring to see if my feelings about Thailand were the same I made the same boo-boo and had a one day overstay (not a full day, just 14 hours.)
Went early to the airport, the check in said I had to go to the immigration desk. It was about 2 in the morning so found the desk there was only one officer present and she was a stunner, miles out of my league! Gave her my passport and asked if she was the only one on duty, in departures yes she was and was bored to tears as I was her first customer in three hours, poor girl. She then said "I'm not going fill out all this paperwork, here this will cover it" and handed my passport back with a one week extension, I put the 500 Baht back in my pocket, checked in and went to the bar.
You can get lucky sometimes.

A few of us here fully support the TM30 rules, now we have a great excuse not to visit far flung villages and pay for sick family, friends, buffaloes etc etc.

I made a boo-boo on my dates a couple of years ago, check in sent to immigration where the whole staff was one very pretty lady in a brown uniform. I approached told her of my plight and she said "I'm not doing all that at this time" (2am) so she just gave me an extension and off I went.

I can not guess why immigration would want you to use the various agents around town!

Renewed my retirement visa last week at Pattaya Immigration in Jomtien, had to have my pic taken (took half an hour) letter from bank and all done easy-peasy.
