  1. I've been looking at the specs of the various contenders for a while now.

I need windows mobile office, excel in particular so that narrows it down

As you say, the full slide out qwertys make the phones thicker , heavier , and less pocket friendly, so that further narrows it down to the touch screens.

Samsung Omnia seems about the best available atm for my needs with HTC diamond second

Omnia has a bigger display but HTC has better resolution

Most of the reviews re the Omnia comment that the screen resolution could be better, ie, website text on the HTC is more legible than the Omnia even though its squeezed into a smaller display.

I guess the ultimate would be if HTC make a slightly larger diamond with a 3-3.5" display or Omnia improve theirs

I'm not aware of any new WM smartphones that will fit this bill

HTC is rumored to come out with a model called, Touch HD which will get a 3.5" 800 x 480 pixels display.

But as it is today the available phones all have their pros and cons.

For me i wanted a slim and pocket friendly WM phone so there where not that many alternatives.

I tried out the Touch Pro, but it was way to bulky for my taste. (Which also ruled out the X1 since they have about similar thickness)

So i was basically left with a choice between Diamond and Omnia.

I really liked the Diamond display and form factor, but its week battery life and its limited availability of the landscape keyboard (only available in browser) ruled it out for me in the end.

This left me with only one current contender, Omnia.

Having used it for awhile now, i must say i am quite happy with it

But if a version with a metallic back plate and higher screen resolution becomes available i would be tempted to change.

  2. I got to test it @ the new Samsung store @ Paragon, Im not that impressed with the display. It's light, but the case feels plasticky.

I'm waiting for the SE X1, HTC Touch Pro and the Android.

Those are totally different animals, since they all have slide-out Qwerty keyboards which make them ticker and less pocket friendly.

So it all depends on what kind of device you are looking for.....

HTC is coming with a new slim touch screen model with a soon though... (800 x 480 pixels) and Nokia Tube is just around the bend too....

  3. Hi

Will it be updated if i buy the phone Monday, or do you have to do it over the net??

    Thx

Hi, since the HH3 is not a public release yet, its just a service center update, the sold models will probably not have this ROM.

But you can ask the shop or the closest Samsung service center to do it for you.

Failing that you can do it yourself, providing you have access to a windows XP box. (There has been reported problems with flashing the ROM using Vista)

  4. New ROM update: DXHH3

Many changes which also includes haptic/vibrating feedback in close to all modes and improved finger navigation and usability.

OK, so haptic feedback now exists on all keyboard modes post the ROM update ?

yes on all the Samsung keyboard modes

  5. The Omni sold here in Thailand, Have the Rom version that have haptic/vibrating feedback. (Only on main navigation/icon, it does not extend to the keyboard)

The phone model is still quite new and Samsung will presumably publish more Rom updates sooner or later.

  6. I bought the OMNIA a few days ago and tried to set up a connection to my laptop to secure all the addresses (contacts) etc.

    My laptop runs on Vista.

I installed the synchronisation software from the CD in the OMNIA's package (Windows Mobile Device Center) and then tried to set it up properly. But the set-up insists on "Outlook not installed" and I cannot backup my Samsung.

Apparently Window's own synchronisation software does not know that under Vista, there is no Outlook anymore. It's called "Microsoft Mail" now. And this program is properly installed. There is no way to install and old version of Outlook under Vista.

So just a warning to all you potential OMNIA buyers: The accompanying software is seriously flawed. (Why am I not surprised, it's Microsoft, right?) Back-up are NOT possible.

But if any of you has an idea how to solve the problem, i would be more than happy.

Install Windows Office on your laptop. (Includes: Word, Excel, Outlook++)

  7. Mini Review: Samsung Omnia Sgh-i 900

    Things to like:

    • Slim form factor
    • Long battery life
    • Large display
    • Fully featured
    • Great web browsing with Opera 9.5
    • Good MP3 player
    • Good 5MP camera
    • Landscape QWERTY keyboard
    • MicroSD card slot
    • DivX video support
    • Tv-Out
    • Customizable front page sidebar
    • Microsoft Mobil Office Pack (Word, Excel ++)
    • Quad-band GSM and HSDPA
    • GPS
    • WI-FI
    • FM radio

Things which could have been better:

    • Only have a Samsung proprietary multi connector. (No miniUSB slot or mini-jack for headphones)
    • Low sunlight legibility

Things which would improve the phone.

    • Dedicated mini-jack headphone connector on top of phone.
    • Higher screen resolution
    • Higher sunlight legibility
    • Refined icon and UI Graphics
    • Extend the Touchwiz UI further levels into the windows mobile structure.

  8. In a lot of the cases its just "disappointment" that she can not hide her true feelings and personality in favor of the extended families interests...

On a more personal level, its not such a "big" surprise that inter-racial relation ships do not work out in all cases...(especially when age differences and preconceived expectations clash)

But how can you explain this to to a "traditional" Thai familly where they preach that personal convictions have to defer to filial "duty".

  9. Something I don't get, maybe I missed something, is why she wants a farang. I understand when you find a "special" someone, he/she may not be from the same country/culture but what's wrong in this case with Thais ? What they don't have that farangs have?

One difference is that many of the Thai's which is well off financially in many cases are just looking for a mia-noi and not a wife.

While a great many falangs with stable economy actually is looking for a wife/life partner.

Of course all the "urban legends" about the blessings of having a falang husband might also come into play. :o:D :D

  10. What a "good" Thai girl/woman usually mean when she say a "nice" falang, is nothing more sinister than that she want a life partner which is stable finacially, not a drunkard nor a womanizer. (and also in many cases someone who do not mind that she has a child already and/or has been married before)

What a"not-so-good" Thai girl/woman mean is that she want a walking atm which turns a blind eye to her "personal" activities. :o:D :D
