I have a background in risk management as well and before moving here I researched Thailand for close to a decade. Strong points: language study, estimating cost of living, trying to understand the culture. Weak points: reading Thai behavior, detecting the difference between a diamond and cubic zirconia gleam in a girl's eye, and understanding the socio-economic composition of the expat community.  I'm just saying, no amount of preparation will prepare you 100% for taking the plunge and I wouldn't beat myself up too much in the 'what-I-know-now-but-didn't-know-then' department.

    Wow!

Just relax, trust your instincts and enjoy yourself...

At 54 do you really want to be having Children?

Don't go for the 'night in shining armor' and try and look after her family... you're 54, old enough to know better, old enough to know what you want, and young enough to just get on with things and enjoy life.... Don't fall into any traps you'll regret...

Great Great advice , full of wit and wisdom!

I sponsored some of my wife's siblings to come to the USA about 7-8 years ago.  Bro-in-law is a nice guy, but married wrong.  Their daughter was a little vixen when she was little, but a rather shy, pudgy kid when she cam here at about age 18.  Thought she liked girls more than boys.  She lost weight and discovered farang boy friends and is now a complete fluff-head.  Speaks great English, flaunts her looks and is pretty well worthless, though entertaining.

Do be careful out there.  There are gems and there are sparkly rocks and pieces of glass.

Good writing!!!! pleasure reading your thought . Completely conquer !

Live in Korat...but would meet them in Bangkok. Would be nice to do Bkk and somewhere nearby. Have done Kwai, Cha Am/Hua Hin, Prachuap, Ayuthaya many times ... and don't like Pattaya

Take them to NANA HOTEL  on Soi 4 Sukhamvit . Across from Nana Plaza complex. Room are inexpensive around $50  per night (included basic breakfast) Next to skyway they will like the time.     [email protected]   4 Nana Tai , Sukhumvit Road Bangkok 10110, TEL (66-2)255-2525 , (66-2)656-8111.

So endemic is the corruption here there exists the probability that those higher up the chain, if not equally corrupt, are moreso and have no wish to draw any unnecessary attention...

As such, any confrontational approach may well draw particular resistance. Playing the game the Western way, going up the chain and expecting ethics & the moral high ground to take precedence is flawed thinking.

Perhaps the best approach is to go local... Rather than asking someone to do their job, take a different approach....

....Bottles of whisky & ask for the favor...

It's not right, but it never is here. Don't get upset, just play the game.

    Bingo !

This is the smart approach . A little "Bakshish" goes a long way!

just today i was in Bangkok Bank and a 60 something year old Farang who was unshaven and looked like he had a serious drinking problem was opening an account with his 25 year old Thai girlfriend.

The two female bank employees were looking at her with real contempt. I heard him say "We really need to find where that other money went." "What account was that?" And joking asked a lot of questions about the new account he should already know the answer to. His girlfriend was doing the translation even though the woman spoke English at the bank. Finally the manager handed him a piece of paper to read so he would know the proper answers.

    anyway his girlfriend was hot.

    Sad ass drunk... Yaaaak!
