  1. To get into the city from my house in Doi Saket you cross the 2nd or outer ring road then the 1st ring road then the Super. I've been here for nearly 30 years and as far as I know the name of the Super Highway has never been changed.

  2. I’ve been living here for nearly 28 years and the smoke haze is an annual occurrence at this time of the year, some years worse than others. If you want to live here you have to learn to accept it as a fact of life.

Most expats living here are running away from something or other in their home country, to my mind it’s just a matter of fathoming out which is the worst of the two evils!!

  3. I’m 75 years old, been in Thailand since the days of Methuselah and still working, have business in Bkk & CM. Happy as a pig in sh’t. I am hoping that I can keep working till I kick the bucket.

I think it keeps me alert and ‘with it’. I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I retired. I suppose that we are all different – to each is own!

  4. I’ve been living in Thailand for over thirty years and never had trouble finding good honest Thai ladies – at least in the early years. I feel sorry for guys who are relatively new to this country (15 years or less) as unfortunately we (us farang) have developed a reputation for being uncouth drunken slobs more interested in associating with prostitutes and young boys to the extent that many decent Thai’s are too embarrassed to be seen associating with a farang. It’s the few misfits that make life difficult for the rest of us.

So Old Mike, I'm one of many farang happily married to a loving well adjusted Thai lady for the last 29 years, so it is possible!!

  5. For me the quality of massage is more important than the décor. Any menu you put outside should emphasise the quality and professionalism of the masseurs, have them dressed in nice light weight clothing with your logo and their name prominently displayed so that the customer can choose the same masseur next time if he/she is particularly happy with the massage, offer Chinese tea afterwards.

  6. Hey,

Don’t worry about the lack of positive responses to your post, most Thai Visa members think like you. It’s just that we get so tired of the repetitive negative winging stirrers that we have got into the habit of not responding for fear of attracting these ignorant minority trying to flame genuine posters like you.

If the farang wingers really believed what they say they would have all gone back to their home countries long ago. In truth they have nothing better to do other than flaming.

  7. Yes I can understand why you look like loosing your partner to beautiful Chiangmai, I did the same thing many years ago. Except for a few old Fugidudies - who like anywhere in the world today are always complaining – Chiangmai is a wonderful, charming, laid back, friendly place to live.

  8. There is an Australian Visa office here in Chiangmai Tel 053-202-225 up to 229. Application forms in both Thai and English are available at the visa office or can be down loaded at http://www.immi.gov.au/

In addition to all the other documents to support her application I strongly suggest that your GF get a letter from her employer confirming that she works there and that she expected to be back at work after her holiday in Australia. The fact that she has already travelled overseas and returned to Thailand is a strong plus.

Good luck to the two of you.

  9. The wonderful Thai people and their laid back attitude to life, always ready to help others in trouble especially the elderly. As every one says – there are so many fantastic things about Chiangmai and its people its difficult to pick the best. One thing for sure, the good and beautiful things about Chiangmai far outweigh the inconveniences, that’s why I have been living here for the last 20 years plus.

  10. ive got a couple of sensors. my nose and my mouth. the AIR IS HORRENDOUS EVERYONE IS SICK> NO ONE CAN BREATHE>BUT CERTAIN PEOPLE THINK THE AIR IS OK. IT IS NOT.

THE AIR AT THE MOMENT IS AWFUL BECAUSE YOU CANT BREATHE.

DO YOU FOR ONE MINUTE THINK THAT JUST MAYBE HERE IN THAILAND THAT ANY SORT OF POLLUTION MEASURING FACILITY MIGHT HAVE ITS FIGURES GERRyMANDERED, MANIPULATED, FIXED.

or should we just look at doi suthep and say its haze.

I take no pleasure in this air. My kids are sick, everyone nearly without exception i meet have a problem with breathing.

    THE AIR IS terrible

Here we go again. I think 'precinct' would have trouble breathing anywhere in the world, he must have damaged lungs.

I think the air here is perfect and I know of no-one not being able to breath because of it.

  11. So, no one knows where I can see Boy perform this weekend? Any help appreciated.

The last time I went to The Brasserie, about two months ago, he was playing there with his uncle (Took).

Yeah, that's the last time I saw him too. My girls think he's cool and want me to take them. Happy too, but can't run down where he's playing. I'm gonna try the Brasserie this weekend. Always happy to watch Kuhn Took play and maybe we'll catch Boy as well. Thanks.

Yes that’s the good/bad thing about CM – depending on your perspective – things are always in a continues state of flux as far as the music scene is concerned. Going to Took’s place on Saturday hoping to catch up with the wild Boy. Actually I think Took’s is the most stable and predictable place in town. Black Magic Women is the latest.

  13. The problem of the elderly expat population in Northern Thailand finding residential on site health and medical facilities for the aged and incapacitated is an ongoing and growing need here in Chiangmai. Over the years there have been several unsuccessful attempts made to set up such a facility by the expat community with the support of some of the local medical practitioners.

In my opinion the reason for the failure of these attempts was the inexperience of those interested in being able to come up with a professional feasibility study which is needed to raise funding for such a project and the fact that because it was to be a community project their was conflict with so many differing opinions on detail that it became impossible to come up with a coordinated and agreed approach to the planing, financial costing and implementation of the project which is so necessary in raising funding.

This is an interesting topic and I for one would be interested in discussing the matter with interested potential investors. The problem as usual is finance, you need finance even to enable a bankable feasibility study.

  14. John is recovering, that's good. Andrew's dead, that's sad.

Look out folks! Whatever you waffle on about here, ie. driving drunk, helmets, flashing lights (wow), etc., isn't going to stop the next TV member or friend of a TV member getting creamed through someone's stupidity. Life goes on for most....but not all.

Couldn’t agree with you more. We all know that motorbike riders have a 63% increased chance of shooting through to the other side compared to car drivers. It’s a calculated risk.

  15. I have been living in Thailand for over 30 years running my own successful business. I have lived and worked in many countries and ‘on balance’ Thailand is second to none.

I would recommend this country to any young working person who has the guts, fortitude, strength of character and ability to accept and adapt to a forever changing world.

I would not recommend this country to anybody who is conservative by nature, lives in the past (old fashioned?), is not self reliant and has a ‘welfare state’ attitude of mind.

The exception to the above are retirees who, very wisely, come to Thailand to pass their last few years in peaceful bliss before kicking the bucket and passing into their next life.

  16. At some point it can be a better investment to buy a house, thats if you are in a position to do that.

Though I have known farangs who successfuly sold their condo, I have NEVER even heard of a farang who sold their house. I think buying a house is not a good investmant if you can't sell it..

Not quite true. I have been buying and selling houses at the rate of about one every two years. Providing they are in the right location (up market) and renovated with quality finishing and landscaping I am usually able to sell quickly at a very good profit.
