  1. This is a world issue not an ethnicity/race/color/etc.

I have been in and around here (not a tourists) and while he speaks about eastern people the same can be said about their own people as I see many not wearing or taking concern about these issues. When me and the wife go out I notice many people look at us wearing masks outside like their is something wrong. So, the issue starts with awareness and educating the public. There has been countless mis-information on social media and main stream news mainly caused by the west. Kicking out people from a country solves nothing.

Whats wrong with using the Bangkok bank debit card and phone banking?

Well the issue is the way the account is set up as the bank does not allow that account access to a card or online as it makes you have to go to the bank in person which normally is not really an issue till now where we will start going back and forth to USA and need to be able to move the money to pay bills without going to the bank in person and need the online access as we can move money via the phones

I have the same account at Bangkok Bank. My planning for any trips would be to leave shortly after the 3rd of the month and return around the 3rd of the next month. But I doubt it would much more than a couple of weeks.

If your are regularly using the same bank branch you might be able to arrange with them to allow somebody to initiate the transfer to your other account. Just complete the forms sign them and attach a copy of your passport to them.

Was going to do that and talk to the manager of the branch by where we live and yes been with the bank for many years and have the 2 accounts described above one for depositing (no online or debit card) and the other for paying the bills here. So, what happens is money goes into the account and then i have to go to the bank and move money into my other account.

    Yes it does.

It seems you have a direct deposit set up and your SSA payments are being direct deposited via Bangkok Bank's  New York branch.

You could change to the relatively new International Direct Deposit (IDD) arrangement to a different account. No need to do all your transactions in person. Sign up form for it is here. https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ssa-1199-op107.pdf

If you are using your transfers to prove your income for an extension of stay at immigration there is one problem with IDD is that the transfers arrive as baht and transferred to the Bank of THailand (BOT) and are then transferred via BahtNet and will be shown as international transfers into your account.

Thank you for this information as yes it is SSA Payments as I do not work (disabled) and it goes threw the branch in New York I just need to change or alter it for a few months then back to normal but my account shows years of the same deposits from SSA in or around the 3rd of each month. I would assume that they have to know or understand that at points of our marriage here we have to go back and forth for visiting family and during that time we need to be able to pay the bills here while of Thailand. There is so much emphasis put on funds they neglect to understand people live their lives on that money it is not for just sitting in bank for Thailand but who am I.... lol

I will guess that you are using Bangkok Bank, as I am aware of that they are working that way with deposits of social security.

What you can do is to go in to the bank and make auto return of your deposits. With that said you must know how long time you will stay home.

Thank you as about a few months till we come back to Thailand now you mentioned auto return if it goes back to USA it goes back to social security?

  6. I will be leaving in a few months to visit family back home and have my reentry pass. Question: I have funds threw social security that go to my bank account here have account for one for deposits and the other for paying bills out of. Now, the US does not allow the deposit account to have online or a debit card for that account. So, what do you do to move money from one account to another if I am out of the country? Can it be set up by the bank to move funds even though i am not present? First time going back home to visit.

  7. I noticed that any and all political that pertains to Thailand are not allowed in this forums when it addresses matters of the current system. However, it is ok to post matters that have nothing to do with Thailand or visas, etc... If one wants to keep track of their home country via news etc. there are many ways of doing this. All matters are POLITICAL as they are all ideas or opinions of others or just one. I noticed and see on this forums more negative talk then anything that is remotely helpful to others but a very tiny few. The premises of this forums is to be informed of changes in regards to Immigration not to talk down on such laws or the people of Thailand. Whether I agree or not agree with them. Thailand is not the USA, UK, China etc. If you like it there or you feel it is better than Thailand then the door is behind you. Nobody asked anyone to come here neither any governmental officials. This forums is more negative then being helpful to most on here. And who is to blame on this forums for this? Thai visa? the Staff? the People? This is human the behaviors rinse and repeat people are the same no matter where you go and that is the biggest threat to "health" is ourselves not climate nor pollution issues.

George Carlin can recite the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and explain entropy?

I do not know if he does or not as it is irrelevant whether one does or not. People only know what they have been taught or learned. One can not speak on something not having any knowledge or first hand experience and even then its still up to interpretation from that individual(s) based on the persons environment. ????

I am ok with the requirement, as some said above I also keep 800-900K at all times in the account, unfortunately other, no idea how many, may have a problem.

Just come to realize, only rich retirees can retire in Thailand, some time ago all retirees, rich and not so rich could retire here and enjoy the left (long or short) years of life, all of a sudden it all changed

You hit the nail on the head it all comes down to money no matter your situation. Who would think that as a "retiree" would need to deal with all the bureaucratic politics. When you get old money should is not the probity for most. But, societies worldwide relying on possessing more and more money when we all die which we all do nothing goes with you not even the lint in your pockets. These guidelines and rules pertain to a very select few ie. : Elite Visa". These laws and policies were changed do to all the people that are or trying to buck the system. I am not "well off" nor do I care what happens with all these political bureaucratic nonsense. I will either fit into the "mold" or i will not and move else where. Houses, cars, etc. are nothing more things we think we need, own, etc. A life can be made anywhere. Life is NOT just about money even though we make it that way it is actually quite simple you only need to understand one thing MONEY the rest is pure entertainment till you die.

And I thought the 800,000 baht was for living expenses, not as an interest earner for the Thai banks!

That is quite funny you mention that since the money can not be touched for anything for 3 months and when you do it has to be maintained so It's nothing more than about MONEY and Interests for the banks same goes with marriage in any country these ideas are all MONEY makers and it is big business for many involved. There is nothing more to any of the laws cause it only ways to generate funds for thai government or governments not for living as I could live on far less as cost of living for me would not be a problem. Living now a days is all about money and if the person does not have it then that person or persons is s.o.l. no matter where you are at in the world.....

Thanks for the replies. Any pitfalls / things I should be aware of ?

In all only had 1 bad experience out of Samut Sakhon Immigration Office when I went to report and renew the visa where the officer accused us of a fake marriage and that I was lying about my income verification paper from the US Embassy. You will encounter people like this. My only suggestion is to research or talk with the embassy (Thai) when you want an answer and you are unsure. Mind you that the officer you speak with may not be the same with another and certain Providences or offices can deny you or may ask you for more than is required.

Eking out on 40k a single man. Me and three kids live very nicely on 30k a month, and we can even afford to go to Ramayana water park this weekend. Food, utilities just about everything except booze is cheap here.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing as 40k is a lot unless you want to live above your funds which a lot tend to do all over the world. I do not have children but me and wife take care of her sons kids (2) during the week to be able to go to school as his mother in law does not take the children to the one by his house. 2 kids plus 2 dogs (ours).

  13. "I am looking to do visa extension based on marriage for the first time. Looking at the 'agents' sites, they have you believe its difficult and want about 25,000 baht"

Typical fee from a lawyer when it costs no where near that to do one(s) self. Paid ฿30k Baht the first time and ฿15k to do the renewal process for me. Till my wife researched and talked with the embassy (Thai) on what we needed to do and bring. Total cost for us was about 5,000 baht. A few bit of running around which I'm sure is why people pay or because they rather not deal with it.

Recommend you do not wait until a month before as that will surely be too late to get things fixed with Uncle Sam before you payment date "if" your payment is not already being sent in IAT format.   You payment would be rejected to Uncle Sam.

Recommend you contact Bangkok Bank and have them look-up your "specific" payment to see which format it arrived in...IAT or PPD.  And do not accept an answer that all SSA payment arrive in IAT format because they do not....ensure the bank looks-up you specific payment.

Hopefully your payment is arriving in IAT format, but if it's not, I would want to have 6 months to work the problem (6 months till 1 Apr 19) and get it fixed before any rejection occurred compared to the payment being rejected and then starting to work the problem with Uncle Sam.

Bangkok Bank is definitely giving everyone plenty of time/notice to checkout/fix their payment if not already in IAT format...recommend you take advantage of the advance notification.

Thank you for the information I will call Monday/ go to the office
