Thanks for the info, I need to get a one year type O multiple entry visa and the nearest place to get one is Penang, Contintal sounds a reasonable price, I've stayed at the Waldorf last time I was there and it was OK but 13 years is a long time so I wasn't sure what state it would be in. Worth checking out the air fare at that price as well.

  2. :o

Can anyone help me out here I need to go to Penang to renew my visa, whats the cost of the train fares one way and does anyone know of a decent cheap hotel, also are the agents who can proccess your visa reliable, been searching around the websites but can't find much on the fares and as it's been 13 years since I last went there for a visa it's probably a lot different now. I live in the wilds of Issan and travels agents don't seem to like answering e-mails.

  3. Hey guys,

has anybody worked with paid surveys or similar online jobs?

    Does it really pay off?

    Thanks :D

:o Registered with a few one lazy afternoon just out of curiosity, only one Globaltestmarket has ever sent me any surveys which is about five in the last six months and you need to complete about thirty to get your money out ,all the rest only ask you to keep your info updated. If your going to try it one suggestion have an interest on every topic on the enrolment form and give yourself a good job.

  4. Papa,

I think if you read the original post the doctor in Isan suggested to go to a better hospital in Bkk, maybe they didn't have a specialist for this kids problem and he only said maybe surgery, as for the 30bt scheme that's what you get 30bt worth. I'm sure you will forward a contribution

Excuse an outsider butting in but I live in Issan and have been to the local hospital quite a few times with the old man, your right in what you say pay 30 Baht and thats what you get. The wards are always full so the beds go into the corridors, if you want a bit of comfort it costs 400 Baht a night even my wife says if she ever gets sick take her to a city hospital. don't get me wrong they do there best but the facilities are just not there. :o

  5. CROSS-CULTURAL MARRIAGES

Foreign husbands pay off for Thais

She recalled that her daughter's marriage ceremony was a grand occasion admired by neighbours. Khamdee said she was not certain that if she had a Thai son-in-law, they would have had the chance to hold such a wedding ceremony in a five-star hotel.

I think she's got her phrases mixed up, it isn't 'not certain' the phrase is ' definitely not'

  6. Do you expats living in Isaan ever have any regrets.

I mean the people that have uprooted from thier native country and decided to live there permanently.

Do you ever feel homesick in a big way?

What about the food? How much do you miss the food from back home?

    The language?

    The Thai way?

If you have a Thai wife, has she forgotten any of the english ( or other ) that she used to be good at? Do you crave a chance to talk in your native tongue?

If you live in the sticks and miles away from other people or even a small village, what do you do?

I am only asking because I may be one of you in the future and probably a lot of others will have the same option.

:o I’m just a newcomer out here, been here for 18 months although I’ve been visiting our village from the U.K. with the wife for the last ten years to see her parents so I new what I was getting into. The only thing I used to hate was that it felt a bit like camping out no real place to put anything, when they cooked it used to be a balancing act where to put things, but now we have our own home with the leather 3 piece, 44inch TV, and a micro

feels just like home and it is home. The only thing I really miss is talking in English without having to think , only one who really speaks is my born again Geordie wife, weather takes a bit getting used to but you find if you just slow yourself down and stay in the shade it’s not so bad mind you after the initial 3000 baht electric bills for the air con you soon get used to fans. Food not a problem although very restricted on what farang food you can buy here thank God for 7/11s, but I just top up if I go to Bangkok. If you haven’t had much time out here I would definitely try before you buy as the man said, I think if you can get away with the heat, the lack of proper conversation ( oh how I miss a good manly natter now and again ) and having to watch Thai dramas with your wife every now and then and pretend to be interested ( they only have one script it seems between the whole Thai TV network) then go for it, I know it would take a lot to get me back to live amongst the scroungers and asylum seekers in the good old U.K. no thanks I think I'll stick with my beer, swingy seat, and the veranda on the evenings thats when you realise you've done the right thing.

  7. Hi there,

    rcm :o

:D Theres a site called thailandteacher.com got lots of stuff on there that may be of help to you.

  8. :o Can anyone give me a few pointers on what is needed to start teaching English, I live in the wilds of Issan country so theres no schools hear for diplomas would an on-line TEFL course be of any help and if so would it be good enough to secure a job. I've been teaching English at our local school for the experience for a few months and would like to try and make a few Baht, which would please the wife immensely.
