  1. I just renewed my passport in Bangkok it came in 17 days. (17th Feb to 4th March). Staff were polite and efficient.
It cost 106.01 Pounds and was sent by DHL not the Thai PO !
With the new pp they gave me the blank form to certify to Immigration that my pp was genuine.
I took it the Embassy and waited 12 minutes while they stamped and signed it....no Charge.

  2. My wife and I have recieved a joint cheque for several thousand pounds from a UK insurance co. They would not do a transfer because we do not have a joint bank a/c.

I am coming over next week on a 1 year non imm family (O) visa so should have no problem setting up a joint a/c but will we be able to pay this cheque in to it ?

    Any help gratefully recieved.

  3. I have been married to my Thai wife since 1998. We got married in the UK and all her Thai documents ID, driving licence, passport and bank account are all in her married name (as required by law). Now I have retired and wish to get a retirement visa.

I can be in the UK if it is easier to apply from there but she is in Thailand waiting for me.

I was interested to see a post that said that if we both travelled to Singapore or Bali we could get a visa from there ?

Any advice, given my particular circumstances, gratefully recieved.

  4. Hi gregb

Thank you very much for your in-depth reply. What I can tell you is that sometimes my wifes phone shows “private number calling” when I call her and sometimes it shows a Thai number.

There is an amusing side to this in that the first time it happened I could tell something was wrong in her voice and then she finally said “why are you in Pattaya and you not tell me you come to Thailand?”

Anyway I am trying to contact the cards hotline but without success at the moment.

I was hoping to hear if anyone else has this problem (or not).

I will post any progress and hopefully an explanation.

  5. For years I have been using a calling card to call to my wife in Bangkok from Europe. For the last 4 days when I call her she hears the phone ring but there is only silence on the line. For me I do not hear the phone ringing at all just silence. Using the same card I can call the house phone and speak to her no problem.

So is anyone else having this problem ?? By the way I bought another calling card and have the same problem.

  6. Over the last 5 years I have had 3 suits, 3 pairs of dress pants and about 10 shirts made at Michelles on Beach road near to Mike Shopping Mall. Good materials, fittings service etc.

    :o

  7. Working for the airlines I hear this all the time. People who booked in advance and paid extremely high fares versus the guy who booked 1 week before and got exactly what he wanted. Several factors here. Yield management...the airlines are trying to sell the seats at the highest possible fare and then releasing the seats at the discounted price as the flight day gets nearer. Remember once the flight leaves no revenue is earned at all. Also of course are the consolidators and travel agencies who are blocking seats and when they don't sell just release them back into the system. On Thai you don't have to purchase cheap economy class tickets till 2 weeks before you fly. Some people have multiple bookings weeks/months in advance and simply don't buy the tickets. The day of the deadline the seats are released back. Two options that generally work are to book the tickets directly with the airline (TG in this case) as they can convert the higher price seat in economy to the lower price seat within 24hours and in some cases right away. An other is to wait 2 weeks before your flight time and see what is released back into the system.

But of course I understand you are trying to make plans far in advance and these options may not work for you but many take advantage of this.

Thanks Flightcrew1 that is useful advice. Unfortunately I just panicked in case I could not get a flight. I guess it is an emotive thing for me to travel with Thai. I have made so many trips, going back 28 years and in the last 20 years (probably about 65/70 trips) always with Thai.

  8. Every day for about a 6 week period during October/ November I tried to book with my favourite Airline (Gold Card for 5 years) I travel over 4/5 times a year but in the past always booked my New Year ticket (28th Dec to 14th Jan) in late July. Well this year I left it too late and during that 6 week period, afore mentioned, I kept coming up with 3500/4000 Euros. Finally about 3 weeks ago I grabbed at an offer on Opodo for Swiss for 1272 Euros (860 pounds).

This morning out of curiosity I ran a check on Opodo for my dates and the CHEAPEST flights of all it came up with were with THAI AIRWAYS for 1144 Euros (772 pounds)

I checked on THAI website and its true they have economy seats available on most flights now. Thai price was 1272 Euros but you always pay a bit more booking direct.

To say the least I am very dissapointed but one saving grace is that Swiss are part of Star Alliance.

  9. I don't know about you, but I will be very happy if TG cancel their A380 order. In fact, I will be very happy to never set foot in one. A full 747-400 is bad enough, but imagine as many as 800 passengers passengers boarding the plane, finding overhead space and getting seated. Then it's 800 passengers deplaning, huge queues at immigration and probably the most fun: pushing and crowding around while waiting for literally thousands of bags to hit the baggage carousel. And of course after that, it's the 800 passengers plus hundreds of meeters, greeters, and taxi touts in that wonderful exit area in arrivals at Suvarnabhumi.

But then there is Boeing's 787. Fewer than 300 passengers (some configs with only 220), cabin air from electric compressors with higher humidity (instead of from engine bleed air), cabin pressurisation at 5000 feet (rather than 8000 feet in other aircraft, incuding the A380), a quieter cabin due to advanced insulation and engine ducting design, large (18.5") cabin windows using electrochromic window shading (no window shades), soft "mood lighting" using all LED cabin lighting. It even comes with an Active Gust Elimination System to improve ride quality and smooth out chop.

And there are less than one third as many passengers and bags as the A380!

I am wondering whether Airbus might have a PR backlash after the A380 begins flying and passengers begin moaning about the hordes of people and massive queues. I know already I will avoid any flights using A380 equipment for that simple reason.

    :o:D

    Typical no nothing <deleted> !!

Very few Airlines are opting for the 800 seat config this is only for prospective future budget airlines.

Most customers (Thai included) will have a mix of economy, business and economy totalling around

    540 passengers.

The 787 is not a competitor in any shape or form except to the A350 !!

By "no nothing" presumably you mean "know nothing." It is true that the A380 will hold "as many as 800", and it is also true that most airlines will opt for a mixed confirguration of classes with as few as 555 passengers (with a typical three class config). Actually, depending on configuration, the aircraft will hold anywhere from 555 up to 853 people. No matter how you count it, that is a lot of passengers - anywhere from double to more than triple the number of passengers in a B787.

Now if you could kindly point out the "no [sic] nothing <deleted>" contained in the post above, I shall stand corrected.

It is uncharacteristic of me to write No nothing when I meant Know nothing and I would have responded in the same way as you have. But the negativity you were and still are invoking about the 800 passengers is biased and irritating. I know of only one airline who is considering a full economy seating configuration and it is highly unlikey that you or I will be travelling on it.

  11. Last year , when I was last in LOS , I read of a new procedure

    where :

    1) ID would have to be produced when purchasing a SIM card.

    2) Ditto for existing numbers or service would be suspended.

The procedure wa obviously never implemented because I

bought a SIM in a 7/11 without amy ID.

Today , again , I read of bombs being detonated in the south

    using mobile phones.

    What happened ?

    :D

I registered mine in Carrefour in Pattaya and saw a thread later where someone, who works there, was saying they had a big stack of forms just collecting dust. Not being collected
