    I do....

What's the Latin American equivalent of 'Cheap Charlie' called ( in Spanish pls )?

    Thank you.

Per your request and since you are so polite, we dispatched a crack team of international investigators to Latin American and discovered none other than a Mexican shop Cheap Charlies El Baratero in Mazatlan,

Meanwhile a quick google forensics analysis shows that the word stingy can be said a few different ways depending on the country your in. In México "tacaño" or codo,  In Spain: Tacaño, cutre o agarrado, In Chile: apretado.  (tight), Others mezquino.

The bad news is that this may throw the OP's departure date back by another 2-3 years as he has a couple of extra words to master.  Most other people can learn Spanish in a few months. It's one of the world's easiest languages.

Cheap Charlies? Not sure such insults are necessary

Cheap Charlie is hardly an insult.  To the contrary it is a badge of accomplishment worn by many value shoppers who think they are beating the system, and many will proudly and self-deprecatingly refer to themselves by this.  There was even a very popular bar by this name for years in Bangkok.  So ease up on the fake news.

Now I think that I can so Mexico is one of the countries that makes sense to be on my consideration list if I leave Thailand.

LOL. On page 56 of this War and Peace length thread, you said you "rejected' Mexico for a variety of reasons, and now it is back on the "consideration list". So which is it?  Or did  you just type something and forget?

OK. I admit it. I find this guy hilarious. He's got a Medellin channel  and he's also on topic, so here's a taste.

Do YOU have anything to post on topic, which I will remind you is, "Expats in Thailand considering moving to Latin America prompted by Thai visa changes" and not, "Americans on Social Security Moving to Medellin".

You are welcome to your opinion of course.

I think there are some interesting thoughts/opinions and also some genuine contributors.

If you think the information here is of so poor quality why do you post?

I am truly interested in moving, using a variety of sources to learn more.

Where else would you suggest I look ?

Why don't you do a google search?  The search "retire latin america" yields 12 million hits and the first page alone has more useful and structured information than the 60+ pages here.

That's one reason why Queretaro seems to me to be worthy of serious consideration even if it lacks some of the excitement of a place like Guadalajara.

I don't see any reason yet to think Queretaro's safe Mexican city reputation will be threatened,

The Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel has been behind increasing violence in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato over the last year — amid a bitter clash with the Jalisco Cartel.

Are you just randomly naming places until you find one that nothing sticks to?  You are gonna be right sooner or later.....not!

Am guessing pin the tail on the donkey is not one of your strengths.

    That's rather dated info.

Afraid not.  The article is only a few months old.  Who to believe.... a major international news source, or your ongoing unsubstantiated hearsay?

Crime flows in waves in Mexico and with the economic turmoil caused by the new left wing socialist regime, expect another tsunami of crime, just like the early 2000s

    Now for something completely different.

    Xalapa Veracruz.

    Gulf coast side.

    Very few expats.

    Would need Spanish.

    But culturally rich.

    In a coffee growing region.

    LOL.  Keep trying.

Veracruz is one of Mexico's most dangerous areas for cartels.

I am not your research assistant so you can dig it out yourself, unless google is too hard for you.

You may be right or you may be wrong but the fact is you lost the argument in the very first sentence when you resorted to name-calling.

There is no argument to be lost here.  It is a case of, res ipsa loquitur, the facts speak for themselves.  Saying the victim attacked a machete is like saying a gun shot victim attacked a bullet.  The perp was also packing the weapon in his car, which shows premeditation.

As for that stupid karate crane move from a movie, it would never work because.

-it's a set piece choreographed scene from a movie

-the streets are not a hollywood set

-even technically throwing a straight line kick at a machete would likely result in getting your leg severed.

Note the video supplied in the post before mine has only a few seconds of actual footage, and the rest is unverified animation based on unsubstantiated claims, mostly made by the perp.

RIP to the victim of this heinous crime.

    Hi

    Argentina ?

I guess this is off most people s options list due to economic instability/inflation.

I have never been there, actually only ever been to Mexico within the Latin America area.

Putting economic instability aside ( not actually an issue for me ) what are the positives and negatives ?

On reading, it seems cheap, good quality food and wine.

    Accommodation seems cheap.

Climate, depends on area I suppose.

Is is safe ? As they are suffering economic hardship is there a fair chance they would welcome visitors ? Seems logical.

I am a fair way off my birth country s retirement age so no pension.

Have property rented out and stock investments as well as doing some trading online.

Residency is not of high priority to me.

Climate , food, public transport ( gave up driving   and would prefer not to start again ) and a solid internet connection are some of my priorities.

For anyone interested in economics related to Argentina a link to a fairly good quality reuters article, from late last year.

Nothing in the article for potential expats nor visitors, it is simply business/economics.

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-argentina-economy-crisis/how-a-year-of-endless-storms-battered-argentinas-economy-idUSKCN1OJ18G

LOL Mexico City is filled with Argentinians and Argentinian restaurants.  Maybe that is a clue.....

A short abd simple comparison between Bkk and CDMX.

    Interesting compare cities and counties.

    MC vs Bangkok

    Polution, better
    Traffic, better
    Cost worse, more expensive
    Population, same
    Metro, worse
    Weather, better, cooler
    Nature, trees, better
    Immigration,  better
Women, beautiful like Thai, but not date farrang much.
    Police, better.
Safety crime, better some place city. Worse other place city.
Safety nature, worse. MC have bad earthquakes and also active volcano close.
Medical care, same private hospital Bkk
Language,  more easy. English and Spanish have common origins.

That was for my old Thai girlfriend.  Kinda lame comparison, but I think you get it. Here is a link on the earthquake frequently.

Alot of misinformation in your post.

CDMX has some really bad air quality months, with smokey, ozone laden air.

Personal security is much worse in CDMX. Google "secuestro expres".  Forget it, I did it for you.

    https://www.publimetro.com.mx/mx/nacional/2018/10/14/se-actuar-ante-secuestro-express.html

The metro is one of the best in the world, and you can get almost anywhere for 5 pesos.

The women are a bit  stocky, and masculine looking. (not sure why you felt the need to provide a comparison for your ex-girlfriend though.)

Nature is fantastic with mountains, surfable beaches etc.  Unfortunately many of the remote places are too dangerous to visit.

That place you are renting looks like a dump in a dodgy hood.  Better move over to Polanco, but expect to pay $2500++ per month for a decent place.

English and spanish do not have common origins.  English is a germanic language, while spanish is one of the romance languages.

Stop calling yourself a farang.  You are a gringo now!

Geez, I guess I’ll spell it out for you - the price of mangosteen is representative of generally inflated prices, usually meant for farangs, and would indicate rents in that area would probably also be higher.  If you could read well you would have understand all that since I was asking about housing in that paragraph.

LOL, nice April fool's joke.  However, if you can prove a correlation between the price of mangosteen and local rents, you may be elgible for a nobel prize and PHD.  Here is the inflation cart for Thailand going back to the 1980s.

    https://tradingeconomics.com/thailand/inflation-cpi

So half the job is done,  Once you have collected your mangosteen and rental rate data for various locations, you can plot these on the chart and run a Monte carlo simulation to compute correlations.  You have a lot of homework here, so get to it.  We look forward to your findings.

I can eat a shit ton of mangosteen, so its a toss up.  Though hopefully the education is good enough for my kids to parse out the general idea behind a specific fact which seems to elude you

If you are the one educating, I am not optimistic.  After all, YOU are the one who conflated the price of mangosteen with educational requirements.  Maybe your school director has issues with your pretzel "logic"

In another thread I read someone mention that mangosteen had dropped to 65 baht which was the lowest it ever hits,

Will the price of mangosteen be a factor in the location you choose to locate to, or is the education more important?  How much mangosteen can you eat?

No doubt this was a tragic story and I remember it well as he lived in the same part of Bangna as me and I remember thinking at the time that the fare was about right.

I think 10 years is about right with all things considered.

I remember the CCTV footage and to be honest the American pretty much threw himself into the machete (I can understand his thinking ie: aggression is the best form of defence).

IF the taxi drivers account is true then then it seems more like manslaughter to me and 10 years seems right or even excessive. You probably wouldn’t get that in UK after good behaviors etc.

You are a dunce.  He was being attacked by a machete, and was trying to defend himself.  Unfortunately, not easy to defend against.  If you move a bit forward or a bit backwards in a straight line, you will likely get hit, similar to boxing.  Best defense is avoidance, run away, close the gap completely so the weapon cant be used, or use an advanced martial arts technique, like kotegaeshi.

  16. Are your fingers starting to twitch?  Do you scurry around and hide under furniture?  Are people constantly trying to swat you with a flipflop? You may be transforming zombie style, into a cockroach.  The only cure is to catch the exact one that bit you and eat it.  Unfortunately, since they are so hard to ID and all look the same, you have to eat several before getting to the culprit.  If the symptoms abate, then you are one the road to recovery.   If not, then you had better report to the local chapter of BugsRUs and whatever you do, do not watch Starship Troopers.
