  1. Hi all I’ve seen posts before about people looking for sprinkler irrigation systems.

I’m just trying out a product from Netafim called gyro net, they also do a super net. Lots of different flow rates available and the sprinkler pops up and closes to keep insects out.

These sprinklers are fantastic and very well made and come at a great price.. Well worth a try.IMG_1051.jpeg.da60a7f9207341824baf7eb65ea99923.jpegIMG_1053.jpeg.8b1b1558d0e68d995bb5f6575eff5d7b.jpegIMG_1052.jpeg.4385caf7faa2c5e23651081f8ec922b4.jpeg

Please share what products you are using for abamectin and neem oil.

Abamectin would be a good choice for leaf miner control in an active infestation, because it is a "translaminar" and one of the few insecticides/miticides that can penetrate the leaf surfaces to get to the feeding  larvae without going full systemic and contaminating the fruit. Unless you spray the fruit.

Translaminar is a type of insecticide that travels only shorter distances in the plant. Translaminar insecticides penetrate into the plant tissue and move within a plant organ such as a leaf. After penetrating leaf tissues, they form a reservoir of active ingredients within the leaf. However, they do not travel to other parts of the plant. For example, these chemicals may move from the upper to the lower surface of a leaf.

Neem oil and wood vinegar, with the right timing, will have preventive action for the moth that lays the eggs that become the larvae that mine and feed inside leaf surfaces, but will not cure an active advanced infestation.

Commercial growers who are monocropping and using high salt index, high NPK chemical fertilizers and pesticides will have more challenges with this and other pests and diseases. They will need to have a vigilant monitoring and spray program.

I prefer not having to resort to the chemistry, even the botanicals, by using a purely preventive organic approach, cultivating good soil fertility, with good water management, enhancing plant nutrition and natural resistance to pests and diseases.

Abamdctin now we only use on rootstock if we get an influx in thrips but they have not been as bad this year. Neem I used to send over from the uk but now have so many trees it’s not practical so we use wood vinegar.. for spray we use T.P.I gold it’s for me much better than the other products around mixed in a spray mix with EM, molasses, seaweed extract and worm cast tea.. just trying Mr Hope worm cast tea last few months.. Also we do a soil drench every month but for that I use the cheaper wood vinegar that you can buy a 30L barrel for around 1200 baht I think.

Sure we try to be as organic as we possibly can but the thrips and miners once starts can make a mess of things.. spraying regular just helps to keep everything clean these pests love the new rootstock leaves and if not kept in check make a mess of young rootstock and trees.

  3. Now is good for grafting citrus also towards end of cool season as things start to warm up.. bit of a no no in hot season.. you will be better grafting the lemons.

    we are growing

    Troyer

    Swingle

    Benton

    Rusk

    Cox mandarin hybrid

    Carrizo

rough lemon ant Tri citrus rootstocks now. You can Google all of them and see what you think is good for your lemon. Should be ready in around 3 months so still ok to graft then.

  4. Hi as mentioned above Netafim do a great 8mm micro drip line and we used it for many years now both in our garden and now in our orchard.
the dripline goes around the tree so gives a really good deep watering way better than any sprinkler. But we only grow a small variety of tree not huge fruit trees.

Pumping water from a pond into a tank I’m unsure if the water would eventually clog the drip line up.

think maybe disc filters rather than mesh or a mix of both would be better.
you can contact Netafim direct on Facebook but I’ve found Plume also on Facebook have all the Netafim products and it’s all good quality gear much better than most you buy here… just on a note we water over 500 trees on our small orchard using the Netafim micro drip line.. it costs around 250 baht per month to water all.

    Grafting Ken,

Can you use any fertilizer such as manure with drip irrigation? If the fertilizer is on top of the dripline, it wouldn’t get into he ground easily as with microsprinklers, would it?

    Josef

Same as CLW says. We use a cut and mulch system so I’ll fertilise then cut and mulch over the trees. I’ve used rice straw on the new orchard as a first mulch but I won’t use it again as starting to get enough weeds and grass growing to keep building things up.

  6. We have 2 varieties of avocado in the ground. Booth7 and one we bought as Guatemala both big trees now.

both flowered last year but dropped most fruit, this year lots more flowers and looks like they may hold fruit this year.

trees are 4 years now but for first year we grew them in baskets/pots of a good size as we do with most trees we grow here. For us this way you don’t get so many dead young trees and can concentrate on growing a nice strong little tree ready to plant.2F1F9EB2-82CE-4FED-8C12-5D88D46265F0.thumb.jpeg.ba4f306a6a64e6691f0bf2a52a0476d8.jpeg2149C6C3-1492-4C41-AC55-9748281338EF.thumb.jpeg.3e7108b6ab76831f15fc2f7ae9ba85a1.jpeg5C02F9D5-78F5-483E-AACA-77122AB7454D.thumb.jpeg.2a70d8b93ec842e736b3e8e4c53214a0.jpeg

Is there a good market for them ?, I thought they were more a curiosity

    regards Worgeordie

So far so good, we sell all fruit in country with more customers waiting.
Customers from abroad also showing great interest and just waiting for us to produce enough fruit so we can start to supply them.

huge orders lined up further down the line that we can’t touch yet until we get around 3000 mature fruiting trees.

  8. Hey all just to let you know I had a really big upset earlier this week... The beast went down, I really thought that after 7 years loyal service she had finally packed in.

luckily after a full strip down and recon service with the local bodge it team she is back up and running purring like a content pussy????.

hopefully for another 7 years service.

I may give her a re spray and add some wider wheels.

    What does "Cooking" mean?

Just a method.. I cook them in bags... it’s taken 2 years of endless failures to find the best way to graft and get the best success rate in this hot climate.  I call it cooking like cooking a chicken, nice and slow over a long period of time to get best results... bbq trees won’t work????
