No working visa , only a long term visa that allows a work permit to be issued once you have a job, a non immigrant 'O' visa for being married to a Thai national allows for a work permit to be issued, as does an extension of stay for one year for being married to a Thai national (financials required for this extension).

so staying here long term is one thing, working here is a completely different thing

Oh yeah, if I have a B-visa and working as a teacher I never have to border run, right? As for the o-visa based on marriage, would I ever have any trouble on my border runs getting back into thailand? I don't have the 400k baht so I wouldn't be getting the year extension, I'd be border running every 5 months as I'd be  using the 90 days + 60 day extension.

No problem to show a round trip ticket out to a nearby country within 90 days for arrival to apply for the visa.

If entering visa exempt the airline will want to see a ticket out within 30 days.

How often does the airline ask for the onward ticket? IF they did ask to see onward ticket, would it be the airline at US or the airline at Japan? Usually my ticket is US to japan to bangkok when I search flights going from my airport to bkk. Also, can the onward ticket be a round-trip back to bangkok, or does it have to be a one-way ticket out of thailand? Can the onward ticket be 60 days, so I can extend my stay, or does it have to be 30 days or less?

  3. I am american so will be using the DC embassy. Would the DC embassy accept this for my flight information they require: a one-way ticket from US to Thailand and also a ticket going from BKK airport to another nearby SEA country? For my ticket going from BKK to another country, can it be a round-trip, or would it have to be a one-way ticket? Can my ticket out of thailand be 90 days after my arrival date (for the 60 + 30 day extension), or does it have to be within 60 days of my arrival of thailand? Ideally, I'd like to have my ticket out of thailand be 90 days after my arrival.

The would deny your application if you did not send a ticket out of the country with your application.

A one way to ticket within 60 days would be accepted. Just check for a one way to ticket from Surat Thani, Hat Yai or Hua Hin to Kuala Lumpur on Air Asia.

Will do. would a ticket leavin thailand after 95 days work? or does it have a 60-day limit

    I would get tourist visa.

A ticket out of the country is on their list of requirements.

    https://thaiembdc.org/consular-services/tourist-visas/category-tr/

The embassy is not only place you can apply for the visa. You apply by main or in person at one of the official consulates in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles.

You can also apply in person at one of the honorary consulates. https://thaiembdc.org/royal-thai-honorary-consulates-general-in-the-u-s/

i'd apply for the visa by mail, not in person, wasnt aware theres other embassies in US other than in DC. I'm in virginia so DC is the closest one but still, i'd be applying by mail. do you know if i NEED to buy some random ticket as 'proof' that im leaving thailand? i.e if i applied for the visa by mail with a 1-way ticket, they'd send the application back to me denied? im looking to come to thailand and get a job, and will do visa runs if necessary if i don't get a job within the first 30-60days

A ticket out of the country within 30 days is required for a visa exempt entry. Immigration seldom asks but the airline is likely to want to see one before you can board your flight. A one way ticket out of the country within 30 days would take care of that.

ok which option would you personally do? buy a random ticket out of thailand and apply for the tourist visa, or just come on a visa exempt? also, would the DC embassy accept a tourist visa application without a ticket out? or would they return my application denied?

  7. 35 minutes ago, ubonjoe said:

You can buy a one way ticket to any nearby country from any airport here in Thailand. You can find tickets for a as little as 1000 baht on a low cost carrier such as Air Asia.

You could use it to meet the meet requirements for one to apply for a tourist visa that would allow a 60 day entry that can be extended for 30 days,

would buying a random 1 way ticket out of thailand as 'proof' for the visa be the best option in this case? or could i just buy a 1 way ticket to bangkok on a visa exempt entry just fine? what do you reckon most people do who are looking to teach?

  8. What would be the best way to do this, as in when I first come to thailand? I dont want to apply for a tourist visa because I would need to send the DC embassy a ticket out of thailand when I apply for it. Could I just come with no visa on a 1 way ticket, with a visa extension? I'd like to apply to jobs on ajarn when I get there. Let me know what is the best option, and if any teachers reading this, what did you personally do when you came to work?

No.  If they ask, they are looking for a way to reject your entry, so will not let you show the balance, nor fetch the money from the ATM a few meters away.    It's not really about "if you have access to the money" or not (immigration's procedures are often not "really" about, what they are "supposedly" about).

The alternative for those (like me) who do not like to carry unnecessary cash, is to purchase travelers checks to cover most of the needed "show" money.

so if im coming on a tourist visa i should bring USD to the equivalent of atleast 20k baht in cash incase a <deleted> asks me for proof i have money?

  10. 30 minutes ago, Tanoshi said:

For a Visa exempt entry (30 days) the requirement is to carry the equivalent of 10,000 baht cash/travellers cheques.

For a Tourist Visa entry (60 days) the requirement is to carry the equivalent of 20,000 baht cash/travellers cheques.

Rarely requested, but if asked and you can't show such funds then you could be denied entry.

i dont like to carry cash. can i just show my bank information from my bank app on my phone?

  11. 4 minutes ago, ubonjoe said:

Yes there is very good chance they will want to see a ticket out within 30 days if you do not have a visa.

If I recall correct the DC embassy has accepted a ticket out within 90 days.

About a week to 10 days is the normal time for a mailed in application.

The visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issue. No problem to do the application early.

does the money on your bank account matter if your trip is 3 months? i see that its a $700 requirement but im just wondering if your ticket is for 3 months that the requirement would be more? doesnt specify on the site

Many embassies and consulates will accept a ticket out of the country within 90 days of arrival.

If you don't get a visa you may need to show a ticket out of the country within 30 days of arrival to board you flight to here.

oh really, if i go on the visa exemption theres a high  chance they'll stop me and ask me for flight information with a 30 day out? do you know if the DC embassy i linked would accept a 90 day flight? how long should i expect to receive my passport back in the mail if i applied for the visa by mailing the application and my passport to them?

  13. 2 minutes ago, Crossy said:

You don't usually have to specify your flight dates for a Tourist Visa, it's valid for entry up to 90 days from issue and you'll get the full 60 days stay even if you enter on the last day of validity.

That said, each embassy / consulate has their own rules (try applying in India for a fun time, I actually spoke to the Chennai consul on the phone, got the visa), drop the consulate an email to see what their exact requirments are.

    4. A copy of flight confirmation/reservation , showing going from US to Thailand and leaving from Thailand (The name of the applicant must indicated clearly)

worried about this part when it comes to tourist visa, as i want 3 months and not 2, and dunno if they'd decline me based on having a ticket out in 2 months. what kind of hassles should i expect if i go on the visa exemption and do the cambodia visa run after 2 months?

  14. 1 minute ago, Crossy said:

With no previous visits you should have no issues whatever.

Your original plan would be less hassle at this end, any particular reason for changing?

From Rangsit you have all the usual border Bangkok points within range, someone will be along with latest news soon.

something came up and im not exactly sure what day i wanna go, and im not entirely sure how the application even works, for example on the form it says you need a flight out within 60 days which i wouldnt have, as it would be a 90 day round trip. would they decline the visa based on that? and also, why would it be less of a hassle with the visa? would they be asking me for proof of flight out?

  15. Planning a 3 month trip this summer in thailand, never been before. Original plan was to do a tourist visa + 30day extension but now I want  to do a 30 day visa exemption, with a 30 day extension at immigration, and then do a border run at cambodia for my last 30 days. Would I have trouble getting into thailand with no visa? I'm from USA. Also, where in cambodia would be best for me to do the border run, if ill be staying in Rangsit? I'm aware poipet is shit.

  16. 13 hours ago, ubonjoe said:

The is no need to get another entry after the 30 day visa exempt entry ends since a 30 day extension of it can be applied for at immigration for a fee of 1900 baht.

If another 30 day visa exempt entry is done at a land border crossing it would not be a problem but he would not be able to get another one this year since only 2 per calendar year are allowed.

how many visa exempt entries via flight are allowed per year?

  17. 50 minutes ago, ubonjoe said:

Immigration seldom asks to see the ticket out of the the country. It would be the airline that asks for it when you check in for your flight to here.

Flights to any neighboring country can be low if you choose a low cost carrier such as AirAsia or Lion Air. Check for flights on AirAsia to Kuala Lumpur

Immigration at border crossings like airports do not ask for tickets out of the country when you enter the country.

So what do people usually do if they're coming to thailand looking for a EFL job, who come with a one-way ticket to thailand on a tourist visa, or on a visa-exempt?

  18. 3 minutes ago, ubonjoe said:

After getting the 30 day extension of the 60 day entry from the visa you could apply for an extension, pay the 1900 fee and be granted 7 days to leave the country after it is denied. No overstay if you do that.

wow thanks! so i'd go to immigration office where i'd extended it the first time. and does it matter when you go to try to get the 2nd extension?

  19. 13 minutes ago, ubonjoe said:

He was asking about that since he was concerned about needing a return flight.

Without a valid visa the chances of needing a onward ticket out the country within 30 days when boarding his flight is high.

I dont understand. If I come using the visa-exemption, I'd need to show an officer in thailand that I'm leaving within 30 days? Which airports are the cheapest to fly to as 'proof' that you're leaving? What if i say that i am extending it..? Also, could you tell me what the typical tourist staying in thailand does, you know, the guys who do the border runs every 90 days? Do they need flights out?

  20. If I want to come to thailand and start living there for a while doing border runs, would I get approved for a tourist visa while I'm still here in USA? It says on the tourist visa application that you need a flight both ways but I wanna make sure. Would a tourist visa get approved with a one way flight, or would it be a better option to just come on a visa-exemption, and not apply for a tourist visa?

There is the stamp in the passport and likely in your record, but it should not affect future visits, unless you become a person seeking back to back entries on a regular basis and make an IO look upon you with suspicion.

People would worry more about being 'caught' in those couple of overstay days before getting to the airport, but that is unlikely.

Well i do plan on making future visits and doing border runs until I finish university and can get a work permit to stay without border runs. If I did indeed overstay 1-2 days would it effect me?
