It depends on your nationality.
Some only get a 7 days extension.
If your handle is any indication, as a German you will get 30 days
extension at Immigration after having used land border

I have read many posts from people who make non bank investments at higher rates and will no longer be able to do so. I am stating that they will not be the person in the long run who will be suffering from loss of investment.
I would say many seasoned investors save income tax on their other investments by living in Thailand, not to mention the lower living costs here.
so it's a trade off, you win a few, you lose a few.

I have a Hongkong passport, and since last year we can use the echannel
at BKK and DMK, have not yet tried it.
I guess that means I can avoid all the potential trouble with immigration officers.

Will go to Immigration tomorrow and was wondering
Whether it's better to go there straight at 08:30 or after their lunch break ?
when would that be again ?
Last time I did this was 2 years ago at Promenada.
Now they moved back to the airport do they still have the English speaking girls around who can assist with everything?
And pictures and passport copy can be done there as well ?
thanks so much

You do not have too. Many choose TH also because of tax free heaven. You are not the first/only one.
Never heared of anyone checked by thai Tax Autority. This is not germany or USA.
If you are in need of a tax id you have to open a fixed deposit account in TH and then ask for TIN next year or you find an employment at a company then you cam ask for it this year.
From my personal experience i can tell you SG banks/broker asked me for TIN but i infirmed them i no have and it was ok for all of them.
Hong Kong stock broker like Saxo HK are also very easy concerning TIN i heared.
Your posts are very valuable, thanks for your input here

My understanding is that capital gains from stock trading abroad
are classified as worldwide income under Thai tax law.
just read through Deloitte and other consultancies'
country tax guidance, it's freely available online.
however, from the discussions I have had here it seems
the taxman does not collect it, the people on retirement
Visa here told me Thai IRS never asked them to file a return.
so it seems nobody cares, just like in other less developed countries.

I a man an investor from Hongkong and I appreciate you have raised this important issue here.
from what I have read before here on this forum it is not a problem to obtain a tax ID when on a retirement visa.
I know you are talking about ThaiElite, but I think you should try again with Thai IRS.
perhaps the people you have met so far were all incompetent or plain lazy.
For example, you could say you need a Thai Tax ID for filing with US bank/brokerage, e.g. W8-BEN, to claim the tax treaty rate for dividend
withholding tax that is in place for Thai tax residents who hold US stocks.
That is a real problem for dividend income investors, without Tax ID
the withholding rate is a whopping 30%, the treaty rate is only 10%, if I remember correctly.
so good luck with that.
And please note that your problem extends beyond paying tax !
Increasingly, you will also need your visa AND a local Tax ID to be accepted by your financial institution as a client from overseas, unless you are also a national of your country of tax residence.
I had one of my accounts temporarily suspended from trading because the documentation was not up to date and lacked a tax id.
lastly, I strongly advise you to check whether your bank/brokerage accepts clients from Thailand at all.
I have heard about some US guys who got their accounts terminated back home when they provided a Thai address because their institution did not accept Thai clients.
btw, in HK there is no tax on capital gains from trading stocks, zero.
you don't even need to file an annual tax return if that's your only source of income

Can I extend 30 days at Immigration after Border Run?
in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Posted · Edited by Krupps
That's what I was trying to convey.
For certain nationalities it does matter how you entered Thailand visa exempt
when you apply for an extension of stay.
I used HK passport at a land border and only got 7 days extension of stay at Immigration within the country.
I think they told me if I had flown in I could have got 30 days.
Did another border run and got 30 days there.....
