There IS some logic to it. Read on...

Common sense would suggest that the reason for banning the booze is to prevent Somchais from sitting in groups and drinking, then after killing some brain cells going off to do other inappropriate things which would spread the virus, such as returning to hug and kiss family members.

Without 'generalising' I think it's fair to say that the government mainly target low-income Thai males as the target group to control in this case. From experience, these guys are completely incapable of buying in advance and rationing the booze for even a few days, never mind a month. This is partly because they don't have the money, and mainly because they can't control themselves or trust their buddies not to cheat. They drink all they have until it's gone.

    Sounds like me, too.

I believe it's a fact, that there is no alcohol sales until further notice. We can't change that by talking here.

But what each of us can do, is to direct our eagerness to drink beer to something else. We have to do that, no matter what.

It would be nice to hear what kind of hobbies people have started or continued because of the current and continuing situation. Solutions.

I'm reading a book called "State the Bleeding Obvious." You have a mention.

  5. Any South Africans in this thread?

History shows what the Bantu Education Acts of 1953 led to (the Soweto riots, the uprising of a generation in the late '80's, and the overthrow of an abhorrent system).

Similarly, You can't give an entire generation open and unedited access to the wealth of information that's available (on demand), then expect them not question both inequality and lack of consistency in their own country (in comparison with others), and to suffer and accept a 'lower level of standards' because some guy who had an army at his back 5 years ago and has done little since says so (er, it's the status quo).

For those days, my friend, the end is nigh.

In the 20 years living here I have never completed nor been asked to complete a TM28 form. My wife has once completed a TM30 form (about 5 years ago).

We rarely had immigration visit our home, but they got a new boss at the imm place and he insisted that they visit every foreigner's home. That happened for 2 years and then neither hide nor hair for 2-years now.

    Things change.

English lessons in Thai schools are pathetic. I met a Thai "English" teacher up country and she could just barely hold an intelligible conversation.

Wow! You've been to every Thai school? Must be some traveller. Or, perhaps, it's just that you were absent on that day in your own school when the teacher told those who did actually bother to turn up that it makes you look like an idiot when you try and paint an entire nation with such a sweeping generalisation. Good on ya, sport.

    Sawadee Krup Yinn

Just to clarify, I am Aussie, born from Greek parents, I have been travelling to Thailand since 2005, moved here in 2015, never learned Thai, nit noi, nung, song, sum, see, ha ha ha, now, yen, catoh, tiruk, etc, etc.

I don't have the patience to learn another language, even though I live here, you know the older you get your brain slows, that said, it doesn't take much for a person to be polite when visiting another country, smile, sawadee, sabi dee, point at a bottle of water, run your finger down the list of a menu, pet pet, muk, muk, cop kun krup, I have always found Thai's to be willing to assist.

I have never had a problem, sign language/gestures with Thai's works most times, but at the bank the other day I asked the teller if she could photocopy the page on the bank book, I pointed to the page and with 1 finger, copy please, she came back with a copy of my name page, I said sorry, no, politely and asked again, she stood back and a colleague of hers came over and I point to the page and showed him 1 finger, copy please, no I didn't show him my middle one, and he did the copy for me, I said cop coon krup and to the girl who looked a little upset at me, but "up to her" as the Thai's say, I was polite and we can all try, it doesn't take much to live together, but as for farangs who get upset, well, that's just the bottom quality of impatient and uneducated tourists, and Budda help the Thai's if they intend on moving here, mai pen rai ????

    How's your English coming along?

  9. 4 hours ago, ParkerN said:

Yes. well. English is the default uniquitous language of the world. Thai isn't. It must surely be the responsibility of Thais to speak English, not for Europeans or Americans (both of whom come here mainly for cheap beaches, cheap food or cheap sex) to learn how to order Somtam in Thai or to engage a waiter whose IQ is likely less than 90 in conversation (quantum mechanics anyone?).

Seems reasonable for foreigners to boycott jingoistic little restaurants like this one. It probably isn't very clean anyway and it seems they need a few lessons in how not to <deleted> their customers off.

"It must surely be the responsibility of Thais to speak English..." Oh, give over!

    Sheez...  Why is it?

Then you write, "...to engage a waiter whose IQ is likely less than 90 in conversation..." Ah, right!

The thing is, you can say what you like, but you don't get to say whose responsibility it is. Anyone with an IQ of 90+ would know that.

    Judge. Jury. Executioner.

I have been a fan of the visa retirement changes.

With the visa changes I was hoping the ones that were on the down and out would leave Thailand, these people were always angry and negative, never polite. It makes my stomach turn to see them on the roads riding scooters, never giving way, always on the horn. Unfortunately some Thais now get on the horn as soon as they see a foreigner.

These horrible old people that steals telephones - Go back home you nasty old man

Though I kinda agree, I can't say I agree with "I was hoping the ones that were on the down and out would leave Thailand, these people were always angry and negative, never polite." Look, you never know what's going on in someone's life. Maybe they're like that because they are down and out and, having invested so much into Thailand and are fearful of having their lives turned upside down by being close to being forced to leave. Who knows? Just ignore them and let them get on with their lives.

Even the <deleted> in the video... maybe he's suffering or struggling too. It doesn't justify what he's done, not for 1 second, but hands-up if you've never, not once, done anything stupid in your life. Nah, me neither.

It must just be the translation. "Summoned for questioning" !

If he is the shooter/murderer/robber, summonsing would seem to be the equivalent of "notice to run".

Maybe this is a repeat of the Red Bull fiasco. Hope not !

Given the appalling nature of this crime, if summoned, an innocent person would go to clear their name. If this person doesn't go...
