  1. :o

On my last trip to Thailand I was talking with this young man who was backpacking all over Thailand for his 3rd time. The subject of crimes against backpackers came up and he made the statement that he figured that most of the losses or thefts was commited by backpackers robbing other backpackers and very little of the stolen items were being snatched by the Thai employees.

I thought it was an interesting take on the problem.

Do any of you agree with him. Is it the backpackers stealing from their own or is it the Thai staff.

    Opinions please.

  2. You forgot to mention Telephone and cable t.v lines. ALso it is way easier and quicker to string out overland/overhead then to dig. As for figuring out what is live and not. Better ask someone with more know how and a meter. :o

  3. It all goes back to the dreaded word..They ASSUME.

They see a heay set(o.k maybe fat) Guy with a Thai lady hes a sexpat and the Thai female must always be a working girl. No way could it be a normal relationship. Who have been married for 8 years. Thats impossible. I never get the tourist frown here in Canada but when I go back to Thailand. They look and frown. That frown say it all. Sad little man could not find a girl from where every he is from and had to come to Thailand. And god forbid I say goodmorning. (Thats another story)

They ASSUME even when they do not know you from adam. Its very sad. :o

  4. What I find interesting is that in the Canadian Military when you go awol or take off you are reported to the police and the meatheads and such but no attempt is made to find you as the manpower and resources are not there. So after a certain amount of time they just release/discharge you out of the military with dishonourable conduct. So why the big hoppla? Most likely he will do a bit of time in military prison in edmonton and be RTM`ed. He will be back in Thailand in 2 years less a day at the worst.

  5. It is not UPS or fedex that names the duty on an item it is customs.

I have shipped with both and a number of times there was no duty and then out of the blue for a declared item of a value of 900 baht..Some photos and such I got a 700 baht duty. I would say that out of 20-22 times I have been shipped things I have been dinged 2 times. All with a similar value and not once opened. The duty was 700 baht on one and 720 baht on the other. Not really sure why its really up to the customs officer to impose a duty.
