We want to take a bus to Surat Thani (not interested in driving). Can someone please advise whether it is possible to leave the car in the car park at the Phuket Bus Terminal for a few days, and is it safe to do so?
Thanks - Ping

Congrats to the OP for finding a novel way of placing a blatant ad in the forum

I would think it's a private soi, hence no government funded lighting. Our situation is somewhat similar to the OP's. For some reason, most Thais in the estate refuse to pay the lighting and rubbish collection fee (B700/month). Fortunately, there are sufficient farang residents (who all pay), but of course the fee would be lower if the Thais paid too - they are, in effect, being subsidised. The situation was identical in the previous estate in which I resided - in most cases, Thais simply refused to pay. Unless such payment forms part of the contract for the house owner's purchase of the property (which is highly unlikely), these payments are unenforceable.

Well, I've read it and I'm none the wiser. Nothing to do with Phuket/Thailand.

cant u do the registration at any time?
not just when u do ur extension.
MY extension is up in June and my 5 year DL is up in March so will get certificate for dl an register at the same time.
do it all in Patong
Yes - I think you are supposed to do it within 24 hours of address change, but clearly that is no real issue.
When I moved (early this year), I made a point of going to Phuket Town Immig with the TM28 and TM30 and other relevant docs. They took the docs, but did not place the receipt in my passport. The next time I did my 90 days (Patong) I had my new address on the TM7 (which form was then still required), and they asked me about my change of address. I told them I had done above at Phuket Town, but they (Patong) said Phuket Town had not registered the change. They then updated the system on the spot without further documentation. So, last time I was due for the 90 days, I did all the TM28, TM30 and other documentation again - provided to Patong Immig and again they provided no receipt for the back of my passport. I am quite certain all the docs will be required again when I do my next extension.
Bottom line - I think you are wasting time trying to do the registration prior to your next extension. However, if you still want to try, make sure you ask for the receipt for your passport.

The routes are (for Thailand) well signposted and the roads are quite good. There is the occasional random military checkpoint.

^The RSS feeds were my preferred option too, using MS Outlook. The problem is that since PG revamped their site five or six months ago, those feeds now (1) do not incorporate the story within the feed (so, headlines only), so they have to be opened back to the internet PG site; and (2) for some reason, the feeds sometimes include only the link and even the headline is missing. (Whereas, the unmentionable site continues to provide both the headline and the linked story in its feeds, so that all can be read conveniently - without having to refer back to the internet site.)

MY wife's CMOS battery in her HP notebook also failed some time ago - also at around the 3 years of age mark. Will take it to Amorn (basement, Big C on Bypass) for replacement battery when I get sufficiently motivated.

Well, for the umpteenth time, Bangla is not Patong - it is one street in Patong. And contrary to the advice of a previous poster, plenty of expats live in Patong and actually like the place. Let the OP make his own judgment - plenty of tourist families prefer to stay in Patong, over multiple visits.

OP - yes, as post #2 states, the service timing schedule is critical. I had a page folded over for missing a service date due to low Ks on my Mitsu PJS. All brands of new car dealers are the same.

You can not be taught in a week a month or a year.
You could have experience in riding super bikes for 30 years and have the muscle memory and reactions to act in almost all situations and still die in a road traffic accident in Thailand.
Do yourself a favour and get the baht bus, your 5000 baht will get you about safely, just beware of people falling onto your lap with a handbag.
Phuket......baht bus???
That's an oxymoron if ever there was one.
Exactly - there is no baht bus in Phuket.
What's the 20thb bus thing called here?
A songthaew.

I think a number of us would appreciate knowing the outcome - quality of work, cost, and the type of equipment you're using - when you get the work completed. I'm coming to the view that this type of equipment could be very handy in the event of an accident.

Yes, they transfer the visa (although the stamp they use bears no resemblance to the original visa stamp). I had mine done last year. After providing the relevant forms and passports (old and new), the immigration guy gave me a smug look and said that I needed a letter from the embassy (as per post #4). I had indeed needed to request this letter when attending my embassy - they had not said anything about it prior to my asking. So I then handed the letter to the immigration guy and he seemed not so happy that I actually had it (gawd knows why). Take no chances - be sure to get that letter.

It's on the corner of a lane about 20 meters west of Esso. Fair prices and a good range (unlike the other suggested place).

Thanks Steve. Invade IT will certainly ship you a computer (I got my last notebook from them). They are very good. As to whether they will build to your specs, it would be worthwhile sending them an email. (The boss' name is Thomas Skyum - very helpful guy.)

^I'm after one too - Extreme 3D Pro. Can order through Invade IT but if I can source it on the island, all the better. Was it this particular model? If so, which shop?
Thanks - Ping

^I take it you are 'pinging' Iceman and not referring to Ping (I'm on a retirement visa)...

My contract includes the half width of road in front, with a stipulation that I must provide right of access. So I can stop people parking out the front of my place (not that it's a problem) but cannot put a structure there. Soi San Sabai is not the same arrangement, because it night-time, bikes will be parked up to three deep in front of businesses without those businesses having any redress. Access to the entries of those businesses is kept clear. As others have said, the soi itself remains in private hands. As to the building jutting out onto Soi Banzaan, I am told that this is currently the subject of litigation and has been for many years (hence non-completion of the hotel), but I cannot guarantee that is true.

This thread proves the point that people have different priorities and desires. For example, the very first reply to the OP had the expected 'avoid Patong' advice. I doubt that this would be because the OP doesn't like cities (mentions BKK); but Patong is nothing like BKK (which I cannot stand). As I've said before Bangla is not Patong - just a small part of it, which I avoid. Patong has too many other advantages. For example, I am surrounded by great restaurants, have a two minute walk to Jungceylon (shopping, cinemas, restaurants) and Banzaan market and am a mere stumble to a number of bars. Yet my house could be in the country because it is away from any noise. (No traffic noise, no mosques, no pedestrian traffic, nothing.) It's like anything else about location (eg some say Rawai, some say never Rawai). For me, I am in the best location on the island - but that is just me.
Similarly, some say don't buy a house, others say do. From a singularly investment point of view, it is debatable - you are probably better off to rent. But with ownership comes securety. I can stay as long as I want with no fear of having to move out, I can redesign to my own liking and I can furnish to my desires. When I fall off the perch, my wife will have a valuable asset which no-one can challenge for ownership. One thing is for sure in my case, I would have been far better off from a merely financial perspective to continue renting as I have for many years in the past - but the financial aspect was not the priority for me.
In the final analysis, the OP really hasn't provided sufficient information for us to know his priorities and desires. Someone mentioned that there have been many threads on this in the past. Too true, with most of them ending up being slanging matches between members living in different areas. All the same, it is worth his while seeking them out (search function) for the background information. Probably the best suggestion to date has been for the OP to get short term rental accommodation somewhere central and then rent a car and drive around. He and his wife can then find their own mutually agreed priorities for location. Then, unless you are 100% happy with the area you ultimately choose, rent for a year before you decide to buy. Moving rentals is easy, just as buying a house is easy. But selling can be a very difficult and long term proposition.
Good luck.

Had the same problem with the wife's Nouvo. Lack of use, fuel deposits gum up the carb (it is actually mentioned in the user manual, which you can D/L in English online). The first time I took it to a mech, he charged B1500 (!) and only changed the air filter and spark plug. Wife didn't use it for a few days and then again couldn't start it. Took it to a different mechanic, he cleaned the carb and it hasn't missed a beat since (B200). Make sure you ask the mechanic to clean the carb - otherwise you may be paying more than one visit. (Tried to attach the manual, but it wouldn't upload.)

Re the screen problem, we use PA Cable (Patong), which I believe may be sourced from KPP Cable (did they ever catch him?). Many of the channels on PA are now being broadcast in a squeeze format as a poor man's method of creating properly proportioned wide screen, so TVs have to be set to 6x9/widescreen for these channels, as opposed to magnify or other non-standard settings, in order to provide the correct picture.

Thanks for all the tips folks - very helpful indeed.
(^Ken - yes, green & furry is the hiso look I'm after!)

Update (in case others are having the same problem). After the replacement spark plug and air filter, it refused to start again a few days later. Ultimately took it to a different shop and asked them to clean the carby. Bingo. Problem solved - now starts first time even after a week of not having been started.

Specifically, I'm after a large (leather) modular lounge suite. So far, I've only found one place that does them, but I have concerns about that particular business. (Not far from Heroine's, but I'd rather not mention the name in case I'm wrong.) So there must be others - any information would be greatly appreciated. Anywhere in Phuket (only).
Thanks - Ping

^Okay, thanks to phuketandsee for your helpful reply - last time I was there, there was a car park (unpaved) at the front southern side. Obviously we'll need to cab it there.
