  1. Hey folks, I just received word from one of my students' parents that there is a protest occurring on Bangna-Trad road today. Anybody know what this is about? Is affecting traffic going into Bkk or coming out of it?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

  2. Since this is subtitle 'Avatar Etiquette', I have to express my opinion that I HATE all of the overly animated or fast-moving avatars that are all over the place. It just seems so distracting. I realize that pressing ESC stops them from moving, but I just can't figure out why someone would want to use something like that in the first place.

I suppose it's just my own fault, but I just can't stand them!

  3. Hey folks, I have a burning question that needs some answering!

I'm picking up my father from Suvarnabhumi today at 4:00pm and then transporting him back to Nichada Thani. We have a pretty strict tradition that a pint must be had somewhere between the airport and the eventual sleeping destination. I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good, quiet pub that's suitable for a father-son chat on the way to Nonthaburi. I realize that there are literally thousands of pubs in Bangkok, but I'd like to avoid downtown so that we can get back to Nichada without having to go through the ridiculous traffic.

Basically, I'm just looking to see if anyone has discovered some wonderful gem between Suvarnabhumi and Nonthaburi that I can take advantage of at about 5:00 today....

    I realize it's a longshot, believe me.

    Thanks in advance,

  4. I've been keeping detailed records of my spending for the past few months, just to see what I can cut down on. I've been able to send home roughly 25000 baht per month to pay off that pesky student loan, but after that it roughly works out like this:

    Rent/Utils: 22000

    Food: 11500

    Drink: 16000

    Transport: 3500

    Misc (gifts): 10000

Obviously, there are some pretty clear ways to cut back on this stuff, but I'm much better off financially than I would be if I were back in Edmonton, Alberta. When I factor in the cultural and climate benefits, this place wins hands-down.

Anyone else have their breakdowns to compare?

  5. Chavalit is experienced enough in Thai politics to know that the end game is approaching and he has a better chance of sneaking his way into another high profile position when the current circus collapses and he can jump on the next merry-go-round.

Agree with that, and Somchai is going to be the scapegoat, for the puppetmaster.

But the question on your lips has to be ... is school gonna be open tomorrow????

That is MOST Definitely a question that's on my mind!

  6. it seems like many people dont know the meaning of the word virtual.

the word you simpletons are looking for is "imaginary", not virtual.

Did your imaginary friends tell you to post that? It seems that it would be difficult to get real ones, with that attitude. At least those 'simpletons' know how to capitalize. In addition, they haven't committed many apostrophe crimes.

To get back on topic, I think a coffee shop that had virtual conversation partners would make trillions. It'd be like a yuppie Nana Plaza.

  7. Phom mong hen bpanhaa! (I see problems.)

(In case anyone is wondering, Chuwit's posters are the ones that have him motoring around on the back of a motorcy sporting a pair of binoculars. This is his slogan. I REALLY want to take one of those down and put it in my apartment, but I feel that would be crossing some sort of line.)

  8. There's an Irish guy in some financial difficulty, and he's currently near the entrance to Sukhumvit Soi 25 most days
drink does a funny thing to your brain ,and hes been at it to long

the moment he starts yelling.. 'drink' 'arse' '<deleted>'

its probably time call the Vatican

I wonder if anyone else got the 'Father Ted' reference. I am now displaying my worldliness by advertising that I, indeed, got the joke.

As for the dude, I'll give him ten baht if I see him.

  9. Hi there, I'd like to get an idea of which schools have had days off due to the political situation in Bangkok. I know that 436 government schools were closed, but I'm specifically interested in the international ones.

Schools that I know had time off:

    RIS

    Ruamrudee

    NIST

    ICS

Schools that I know didn't have time off:

    ISB

    TCIS

    Concordian

I know location has a lot to do with this, but it's obviously not everything, with RIS closed and ISB open.

Anybody have information on any of the other schools? (ie Patana, etc)

    Cheers,

    BFD!

  10. Excuse my ignorance, but is this a standard facet of the EULA?

"11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. Just wondering, as I have no idea. It seems a bit over the top to me.

  11. Yeah I don't watch it too much, but it was funny when he went to a proctologist to get checked out, saying

"I have a tickle in my anus".

Well I thought it was amusing in any case.

    :o

He actually told the proctologist's assistant that he had a 'gerbil stuck in his anus'. As is always the case, the assistant blabbed and soon everyone in California knew of Larry's ailment.

Later, in the same episode, Larry goes to Jeff and Suzie's daughter's bat mitzvah. Under the guise of trying to wish Sammy a happy bat mitzvah, he addresses the audience and dispels the rumour. "There's been a vicious rumour circulating lately..."

Might the be best written TV show I've ever seen.

  12. ... biggest system of it's kind in the southern hemisphere. Had a special on the system on TV very impressive 48KM sewer pipe big enough to drive through. All goes into the treatment plant and is converted to pottable water and piped to your home for batjhing drinking etc.

Don't use ice cubes in your cocktails.

I'm a nitpicker today (too much time spent marking essays). Singapore is north of the equator by 137 km, according to Wikipedia.org.

Why do I care? I have no idea. I'm going to go eat some more feces, please ignore me.

  13. I guess, since this thread is about generalizing, I'll say that my experience has always been the complete opposite. I'm the furthest thing from a neat freak that you'll encounter, but I know where stuff is (whether I put it there, or my girlfriend puts it there). On the other hand, almost every girl that I've known has spent more than 7 hours of her lifetime trying to find her keys in her purse.

Just an alternative point of view, I guess.
