  1. Going through the same thing now...the car is so important but the money it represents is more so. Just have to hit the sweet spot.

Th conniving little bitc**s just don't respect anything, it is all primitive asset building with no global logic. Pick up one day...no pick up the next...money one day...gone the next and this is after a 6 year marriage

  2. Don't understand this. You just take all the paperwork for your Australia marriage, get it translated to Thai, certify it at the Thai foreign ministry on Chaeng Wattana, walk into any ampur office, register the marriage, then walk over to the next window and get divorced.

What is the problem with this? Unless Australia is different than every other country in the world, they would recognize the divorce. The divorce process in Thailand allows both parties to agree on division of assets without going through a court.

This sounds like the most attractive solution if it can be done. Has anybody had this experience? I can understand the Thai marriage / Divorce with supporting Australian marriage certificates etc. Would the Amphur divorce be recognised in the Australian legel system though?

I also believe we could meet at the Australian Embassey and sign the necessary paperwork witnessed by an official then lodged by post. Any previous experiences relayed would be greatly appreciated

    Regards

  3. My wife and I were married in 2006 in Australia but have lived mostly in Thailand since then. The marriage has been rocky for the last year or so and it has now come to light that she was involved with a Thai guy when we were married and has remained involved with him to this day. She wants a divorce, as do I, but does anybody know how I can go about it from Australia?

I dont expect (please god) any complications and would like it to happen as fast as possible.

Thanks for any assistance or info in advance

As you are Australian just divorece in Australia. Court cost about $450 you will also need to arrange service of the documents.

Be warned she can then claim property rights,.

You can even lodge everthing online. See www.familycourt.gov.au

It would however be cheaper and easier to go directly to the amphur here with here and divorce free if she agrees. Instant and the settlement is what you have negotiated.

We have no Thai marriage, so nothing could be done here could it? Unless it could help me in my Australian application.

  5. I can only speak of my own observations after 5 years in rural Thailand. My inlaws and most of the village are small lot farmers, most of the rice is for self consumption and a few cash crops in between; tobacco, chilli, soy, corn.

From what I see year to year is when the time is ready for rice they go hard until the job is done, same for chilli, soy and tobacco...they are bloody hard working and very diligent when they need to be.

During the quiet times they take it easy and seem to be occupied by different festivals and cultural activities, some men drift off to building sites, some girls drift off to try and snatch a farang..whatever.

The family is lucky, they live in a nice valley, water all year and flood plain fertility to the soil, we had a visitor not long ago who lived there 30 years ago and said if you had land in this valley and were broke or hungry you were lazy. She meant that something could be grown all year. I mentioned this to my wife and she said it was true...some family land lay fallow and she said they were lazy this year and didnt want to put a soy crop down.

There are some very poor people in our valley as well, but I never see a kid in a scruffy school uniform or a girl with scraggly hair come out of their cinder block bathrooms. They have pride, they work hard and they help each other. I doubt they have much savings or all that many gadgets apart from the mobiles (1000 baht 2nd hand Nokias for anyone over 40 it seems :))

I thought it was very 3rd worldish when I first visited but I have come to appreciate the basic lifestyle they lead.

  6. I wear a helmet in Cm in the mornings to avoid the 200bht fine.

All other times I don't bother.

If Buddha wants me to die, wearing a helmet won't save me.

If Buddha wants you to be a brain damaged vegetable needing 24/7 care and draining your loved ones of finances and life.....I suppose you have the same point of view.

Its not black and white..life or death..there is a huge amount of people with head injuries in the middle.

Why do people only think of themselves???

  8. Rachawadee resort is the best choice for anyone who does not mind being out of town a little and has a car. Nice rooms, swimming pool and restaurant.

stayed there once and agree, nice friendly staff, also ate there several times, I usually arrive in KK on the last flight from BK and I always stop off at the Rachawadee for dinner before my drive home back to Phon, good food at a reasonable price

    Brian

They do a very good stay and drive deal. Car and accomodation for 1500 baht a day as I recollect.

  9. R.I.P Al,

Had a couple of beers with him a few days before. Funny little bloke :)

No security guards there, Al was the sort of guy who wouldn't show up for a few days at a time. Last seen celebrating his 60th birthday with a few buddies and apparently died that night after returning home as much as anyone can tell.

Hope you finish your book upstairs pal.

  10. check theres no play or noises in the front wheel assist as this is normally the first problem you will have.

    Farmerjo

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the advice, can you clue me up how i would check the front wheel assist mate? That would probably be engaging 4WD would it?

    Cheers

  11. A happy wife

    A happy life

    I like this one.

The Sin Sod is a Thai custom, as much as offering camels for a girl in Africa or the Middle East is :D

Without it, you're not supposed to get a Thai wife, whatever her social status.

Another old custom is that a woman must be able to weave silk before being considered wife material.

Do they stick with that old custom?

I mentioned this to a mate today and he said "They may not be able to weave silk but they can all spin a good yarn" :)

  12. Andy, that sounds like a good price especially with the implements that come with it. My tractor is a four wheel drive 31 HP Yanmar. I bought it several years ago and I think I paid about 550,000 baht. The 600 hours is not excessive at all.

I bought the Yanmar rather than the Kubota because Yanmar has synchroshift. That is a lever on the steering column that allows forward and backwards by just moving the lever up or down.

    Hi Gary,

Hope all is well in your part of the country, thanks for the input. I have looked at the syncroshift as well and it would make life easier for sure but i have set a budget of around 250.000 so it looks like the left leg will be getting a workout :)

  13. Hi Guys,

I have been quoted 270,000 Baht for a 2nd hand Kubota 4WD 20hp. It has 600 hrs and comes with rotary tiller, front blade, disc plough and canopy.

Can anybody tell me if this proce is in the ballpark or too high, I expect that it could go down to 250,000.

It will just be used for small market garden type work and needs to be small to work in the mae suk trees.

This price is from the second hand dealer in Chum Phae for those familiar with this part of Thailand but any other tips or leads from anyone in the Khon Kaen or Loei provinces appreciated.

    Cheers

    Andy

  14. I told my wife that since the kid has done such a terrific job, she should give him a good tip. She told me that she has already bought 500 baht worth of Lao Kao for him and his small crew.

You really would have had to seen it before he started to appreciate the work that has gone into the project. A total of 9,600 baht plus the 500 for the whiskey. She now has about 8 rai of land ready for planting and she never had to use my little Yanmar 31 HP tractor.

    Hi Gary,

Good to hear these stories of value for money. Off topic but I watched a neighbours house being lifted, moved 10 metres and reset on concrete posts last month...cost 6000 baht...probably a quantity of firewater at the end of each day as well.

When I have had sheds built and other work around the place the builders seem to respond to and give a better end product if there is a bit of sanook involved, I used to shout a few bottles at the end of the day and BBQ a bit of beef or fish.
