  1. I've attempted several times to replicate mango sticky rice which I was buying in Bangkok when I was there, all of which tasted consistently the same when bought from either Carefour, or my local street vendor on Sukhumvit Soi 55 right round the corner from Thong Lo BTS.

I've been using imported Thai Coconut Milk, and Imported Thai Palm Sugar. I would like confirmation as to exactly what is used in Thailand because with these ingredients my sticky rice tastes absolutely nothing like the sticky rice in Bangkok nor does the coconut creme. I suspect this is due to to the Palm sugar. Do the Thai's use Coconut Palm Sugar or just plain old white sugar?

Making the rice itself is pretty simple and has no effect on the overall taste of the finished product. I don't even think the local vendor used specifically glutinous sticky rice, it just seemed to be normally cooked jasmine rice or sometimes black rice. sure it is sticky but this is because of the sauce mixed with the rice.

Anyone have any suggestions? I've searched this forum with no results.

  2. What I find quite irritating about Bangkok is often all the stores I visit carry the exact same lines of products. Today I was shopping for a Cast Iron 10" square grill pan. No shortage of the same cheap n nasty aluminium/telfon coated rubbish (which warp after a month use) products. After visiting, Central Chitlom, Central World/Zen, Robinson Asoke,Carrefour/Tesco Rama 4 and Emporium, only the latter had a Cast Iron range in addition to all the other aluminium/teflon Tefal, Meyer etc found everywhere. However the Cast Iron range at Emporium was pathetic, only 1 single display product available to choose from. Sadly this item was beat up and scratched this happened to be a Le Creuset. When it was mentioned earlier this range at Emporium was overinflated I thought I was prepared for this, however i think Hyper Inflated would be more accurate. For this trashed display piece the price tag was 8000 Baht equivalent to 231.014 USD !! The store personal were not prepared to let it go for a Baht less !!! Considering the same product can be found in the US for $110 I couldn't help but to laugh and find the closest exit. Caveat Emptor.

  3. I'm looking for a hand Lime Squeezer in Bangkok, but only seem to find the same product available at every store, Emporium, Carrefour, Central Chitlom level 5 homewares, BigC etc

This is what I see at the stores :

    Im looking for this design:

    Any ideas?

  4. im growing increasing alarmed at what im reading about google politically [news/info/email] (and im all to aware that it reads and records every email sent) and ive never like the yahoo.com domain - although i have accounts at both.

is anyone aware of a stable/established free web based email other than above?

    https://www.fastmail.fm/ FTW BO!

  5. Looks like some significant routing changes have occurred in the last hour @ True. Connection went offline for about 30 mins, my packets are no longer routing thru CAT routers. As can be seen in malcolmswaine trace hops 7-8 there is a huge latency of around 200ms. I was also seeing this anomaly. Now packets are going thru trueinternetgateway.com which has sliced off approx 180ms. I'm now routing to HK then to JP and back to Australia, which is much nicer than going to the US an back to Australia. Hopefully Internode is close to commissioning a path thru the Sea-Me-We-3 cable down to Perth, which should be even better.

  6. securemail.internode.on.net is alive and well but your icmp packets (traceroute) are all being blocked by their box at 150.101.134.54

    A small scan shows;

    Scanning securemail.internode.on.net (203.16.214.172)

Discovered open port 25/tcp on 203.16.214.172

    all other ports deleted

So your email port (inbound) is open if this is what you are after?

    But as the name suggests it is secure mail and does not like un-registered domains and IP's by the looks of it;

    Connected to securemail.internode.on.net (203.16.214.172).

    Escape character is '^]'.

    220-ipmail01.adl6.internode.on.net ESMTP

220 ESMTP; my.ip.address.changed.here [124.xxx.xxx.xxx] in MTA's None; drivin' into the sunset

    Big thanks to every participant.

joncl-> I can confirm ICMP packets and UDP packets are getting blocked by 150.101.134.54 (perhaps a layer 4 server load-balancing switch) TCP trace rolls out to the host without issue. As you noted the host is secure using SSL ports. Still this leaves holes in any explanation as to why I'm experiencing significantly degraded performance access this mail server ie: approx 5 mins from connection establishment to final connection tear down. This process should take 10 seconds as is the case with my other IMAP accounts (based in the US). My ISP is looking into it.

My ISP Internode is currently commissioning and alternative path from Asia to Perth via the 'Sea-Me-We-3 ' cable, hopefully this is not to far off completion.

Far to excursive going from Bangkok to San Jose and back across the Pacific to Australia ;-)

  7. Unless it's a double entry visa, you aren't losing anything.

The date they gave you in your passport is a 'use by' date.

When you enter Thailand, prior to the 'use by' date, you'll get the full 60 days permission to stay from that date.

You can choose to enter Thailand the day before the expiration (use by) of the visa and still not lose anything.

I think I understand your concern. If I'm off base, please post again.

Have a good time in Thailand.

It says it's a Multiple 3 entry. Oh I see, they did actually stamp it as of the 8th on entry and Valid to stay 60 days. I stand corrected "Pattaya46", (your name have a connection to VR46 by any chance?) having read the stamp it does indeed state the visa is valid on the 25th May and must be used in this time.

Ok so on the 4th of Feb I must leave the country on a border run to get another 60 days? Is this the procedure?

  8. I arranged my Visa in my home country before I arrived in Thailand. Oddly, I filled out the paper work on the 25th Nov at the consulate and provided my flight itinerary which was for the arrival in Thailand on the 28th. Obviously I expected the Visa to commence on the 28th but she created it for the 25th for some stupid reason considering It would not have been ready to pick up until the 27th. Then the PAD protests begun the day I picked up my Visa and later that evening I was informed that my flight had been cancelled and the airport shutdown. When the airport was re-opened I managed to get the earliest re-scheduled flight which had me arrive on the 8th Dec. This is a deficit of 13 days!!

I'd like to know if there is a special clause for which make concessions for this situation and provide my visa date beginning when I actually arrived in the country?

Anyone else been in a similar situation?

  9. ATT: don't type the tØ®®3N† word with correct spelling, else i wont have access to this page to read the replies.

Not sure if this is a filter blanketing thailand or isp based. I cannot load any url using the word , tØ®®3N†, can't do a google search with this word and can't load any page containing this word 'access denied'. kiddy prØn yeah but this is ridiculous.

im using a paid wireless service, which apparently is kkthai.com (also very poor dns name server lookups) what's up anyone?

  10. Any idea's on where to look for shopping trolleys/grocery carts similar to this:

    5304946229162870889vb.png

I've looked in Makro Sathorn, and Carrefour/Tesco Rama IV. I certainly couldn't find anything, perhaps looking in the wrong area.

same place as the rice cookers mate :o

funny your last advice lead me all over the show, none of the retailers suggested had the brands I enquired about. meh

  11. drop the following in order into the blender (don't put the frozen fruit in first)

    1 fresh mango (namdokmai-preferably)

fresh papaya (2inch wide slice the length of the fruit-slightly less than amount of mango)

    handful of fresh pineapple

1/2 frozen banana (freezing concentrates sugar for sweeter taste)

handful of frozen mixed berries (eg: ras, blue, black, boysen, cran)

handful of frozen strawberries (buy fresh strawberries cut them up and freeze them-not store purchased frozen strawberries)

mixture should be thick and icy, very refreshing and cooling on a hot day. Don't spoil with yogurt, cream, milk or any other dairy product.

  12. bought a new one the other day from HOMEPRO....had quiet a few on display....this one has a little basket in the top you can steam veggies too, even cook a cake if you want....some department stores have whole levels of rice cookers :o ...skys the limit!

Ah yes, I'd like to be able to steam veggies, this should negate the need to buy a steamer. I wonder if a rice cooker can also be used to steam noodles?

    Thanks for the idea's btw.

Hey funny you mention noodles...I might just give that a try and let you know...do you have any preference to the type of noodles we should be eating????

I believe it is well worth buying one of the good ones, by that I mean, not top of the range 5,000 baht jobbies with vibrating whatevers, but I think mine was about 1700 baht, something like that, has a tefel coating, dead easy to clean. About 18 years ago, I bought a Sunbeam rice cooker in Australia, it was upmarket one and it still works today....last year I had it in my 4x4 & it travelled around Australia with me on a 40,000km trip & guess what....its still cooking rice, it also had a tefel coating, but it wore that out a few years ago.

Avoid the ones with the retractable cords, the retracting thing always buggers up & ur cords either jammed in or out.

--> neverdie I love fresh rice noodles and soba noodles, both of which have low-med glycaemic index.

thanks for the tip about the retractable cord. Hopefully I can find one with a detachable cord, the chief advantage being able to suit locally pinned power sockets (if the device will be taken to other countries) via using a local cord.

thanks again. post back on your noodle experiment. curious, would you put the noodles in the bowl the rice normally resides in or in the top steamer bowl the veggies are placed?

  13. Besides Tesco/Carrefour, is there any other places in Bangkok with a good varied range of rice cookers worth recommending?

I browsed Tesco/Carrefour today, the range was limited, basically just the cheapo large 10 cup cookers. I cook for myself so a 3-5 cup cooker is more practical. Maybe Zojirushi or Tiger rice cookers are available in Bangkok?

    Thanks in-advance

After reading your post and subsequent follow-ups, I am wondering if you are serious. Just because its a 10 cup rice cooker, doesnt mean it can't cook 2 cups.

I read the manual of several 10 cup Tiger rice cookers, the manual does not recommend using them for small quantities of less than 3 cups. So actually I am serious and have done a lot of research. BTW Tiger and Zojirushi are the most common & widely known cookers in Japan. If you were a foremost authority on rice cookers then you must have known, but since you have never heard of them I must ask myself how serious I really am. :sigh:

Thanks anyway for the sliver of useful info you did actually post.

Special thanks to yogi, neverdie, dotcom for the suggestions.

Its a bit like looking for ice at the North pole dude. They're everywhere. Far more important is how you cook the rice.

Where is everywhere? Provide examples of stores. Im not familiar with retail outlets other than the two I've mentioned and visited. If Tesco/Carrefour don't have them where else may I visit? small 3-5 cup cookers, eg Zojirushi or Tiger.
