  1. You had apparently done 2 visa exempt entries at a land border crossing this year when you were told that.
There is no limit if you have a valid visa for entry to the country.
Thanks Joe. The first crossing was on a METV 2 days before it expires. The second was visa exempt. I thought it was only visa exempt not METV but the IO said otherwise. My wife was with me and they talked about it in Thai.

  2. I was going to go to Savannaket and hopefully get a non O based on marriage next week. I left Thailand in late May when my metv ran out and returned in early July on a SETV. When that expired in late August I went to Cambodia and returned via Hat Lek on a visa exempt. When I went through the IO said I had used up my 2 land crossings for the year. If I go to Savannaket and get my Non O will I still be able to return to Thailand by land or will I need to fly in having done 2 land crossings already this year? Thanks.

  3. Right. Immigration could install a credit card reader, get an authorization for a 20,000 baht payment but don't capture it. This would allow them to verify that a credit card is valid and has the requisite funds available, without causing the visitor any trouble.
It was the Prime Minister who said it. In Australia only older people use cash. I have an app on my phone which shows all my account balances.

  4. A pity that there don't appear to be any direct flights between U-Tapao (as mentioned by the OP) and Trat, though - unless I've missed something in the Google search I've just conducted. But I suppose the OP could always go the pretty way from U-Tapao to Trat via BKK if he was desperate enough to minimise the perils of road travel on Highway 3!
Unfortunately Bangkok Air own Trat airport and only fly from BKK.

  5. Good advice. I have never done that border crossing as I'm on annual extensions. I suggested only as good excuse to spend time koh Chang. Can you add detail. What was the amount of extortion. Guess we can accept if suits end result. Never nice to get one up the ....
They ask for 1500 baht for Cambodian Visa instead of $30usd. If you are persistent you can usually get $30. Just politely keep saying $30 USD and they give in after a while. Evisa is $36 and doesn't take a page in your passport. Saves all the stress but make sure you get the proper government site. Koh Kong is ok. The Tavern has nice farung food as does Fat Sam's. Both run by friendly UK guys. Lots of friendly expats. Cheap entertainment area.
