  1. I live next to the night safari , quite close to hang don road, Iv had IP-star sattelite for a year now. the download speed i get is around 10-15 kps :o

i pay around 2500 per month for it, but suffer from disconnections around 5 times a day ussusllay for around a 5 mins each time. Although the guy came out and did somehting, its been much better past few days. still crap download speeds mind, but after 11pm the speed goes up to around 40kbps.

on a good point, if i need the engineer to come out i just ring him, and he comes within 3 hours...

  2. "Ayy ooop, Ecky thump Whippet gone down pit" then the speaker would be right to expect her to understand, but if the same conversation was held down in civilisation then she would be correct to regard the speaker as some sort of retard.

haway jersey_uk ney need fa that lad :o thats not a very "civilised" thing to say, is it?

being from the lovely north of england, i find my accent is a great help to speaking thai. we pronounce vowels in a similar way as in thai and don't add r's where they shouldn't be, hearing people (soft southerners :D ) saying "bart" for บาท makes my skin crawl.

regarding tone mispronounciation, i agree a lot depends on the person you are talking to. i think some people don't like farangs speaking thai, if they don't speak any english they feel they lose face & so will not try to help you. others are impressed by your attempts & will correct tones & help as much as they can.

but then when i start talking about whippets no-one can understand me :D

  3. Hello, after taking my honda lawnmower to get a new blade on somewhere on hangdong road, they put the wrong one on and didnt put it back together properly, when i tried to use it the ###### thing broke :o

Anyone know a dealer i can take it to in chiangmai? or a place where they are very good ? need to get it done soon the grass is growing at an alarming rate :D

    Thankyou..

  4. My experience of Chiang Mai Uni Small Animal Hospital - took my Thai Ridgeback for castration (sorry boy!) and was pleased with the place overall.

The "ward" was a bit cattleshed-like but vets speak very good English & looked after him well. Hes very nervous around strangers, so we were worried about leaving him. When we picked him up the vet apologised that he was still a bit out of it, as it took a while to catch him! They were talking in Thai to him at first but then realised he was a falang dog & changed to English to make him feel at ease. I think this shows a compassionate service, as they could have cornered him & pinned him down, but they took the time to talk to him!

The op cost 600 & drugs 90, 200 for blood tests before hand to check he was healthy, 50 for next appointment to change bandage, nothing to take out stitches on the poor things 4th visit!! and then 200 for combined rabies, parvo etc shot.

We just walked in first time & had blood taken, then made appointment for op a few days later. Receptionists didn't speak much English, but sent out a vet to help with forms etc.

Its located on the Canal Road just next to the traffic lights between Suthep Road & Huay Kaew Road.

  5. Hi

I'm with the Halifax too & have had the same problems, my g/f is with HSBC & her card won't work either - all ATMs saying communication error or contact your bank. Both banks have confirmed money in account, cards not cancelled. We went to Siam Commercial today in CM & said we can't get money out of ATMs and they swiped it, took a copy of passport & gave us the cash, we got 20k out no probs.

Hope you get sorted, it was awful being poor for a day!!!

  6. i have TOT broadband sattelite which i pay 2600 baht a moth for. its bad, and i cant access my favourite sites at all, since the earthquake. :o

i really hope it will get better after the 20th jan, when they say it should be fixed then

  7. im having exactly the same problems you described, so its not just you. i can only get certain websites, google now and again. this started on boxing day and has got no better since. i had the guy who installed it come out yesterday. he coudnt help me at all, and said it was a problem with all ip-star at this time. he said it was caused by an earthquake in Taiwan and things should improove in a week or so.

i have had no real problems with my service, in the 3 months i have had it in. so finger crossed we should be ready to go soon

  8. i live right next door to the flower show, i went yesterday and thought it was very nice, they have done an amazing job landscaping it, very impressive. I havent noticed any power cuts, water shortages, i have had a few interuptions with my broad band, but that may not have anything to do with the show. The one thing getting on my nerver is this music being played constantly, some sort of african jibe , the same tune over and over again!! good job it finishes at 9pm :o

  9. hey! i fish bosang often, but havent been for 6 weeks or so, yuo will need powerful tackle, a heavy rod, and strong reel. loaded with 30 lb line, a fixed "method feeder" and lots of bread "sandwich"bait to mould around it, and a huge strong hook.

you will experience a hel_l of a fight when you catch one of these cat fish! maybe i will go next week sometime if you would like to come along mate your welcome. the fee is 100 baht if i remember correctly :o it is quite difficult to find if you havent bee before. tight lines :D

  10. Hi

I'm renting a house near Hang Dong Road from next month, with a large garden. Need to put up a fence, pref 6 foot. Can anyone suggest best materials/suppliers/labourers & give prices? Considering chain link, but looks a bit prison-like, although could remove & sell if/when we move.

    Any ideas/experiences welcomed.

    Thanks

  11. I agree, not all people who teach english are back packers, or go out and get drunk / whoring everynight during the week, if you have a genuine interest in teaching, and can offer a good service, then why not teach? im in the middle of my tefl right now, and if i dont do very well at it, i wont be teaching at all. As it turns out im really enjoying it, and i think il do ok. I dont have a degree and if i do get a teaching job, i will give it my all. im not the type of person who would go to school pissed, and if im sure i could do a better job than someone who did.

  12. thanks for replying, that looks nice and i like the idea of walls round. its a bit out of my price range though, was looking for something around 7000 per month. maybe my budget is to low for a walled moo bahn.

are break-ins common here? i havent seen any crime here so far.

  13. hello all, i have been renting a condo in chiang mai now for a month, and still have 2 months to go before i look for some-where else, as i have family coming to visit at the end of the year, i thought i would rent a 2/3 bedroom house, as some of them seem quite cheap.

we really like the security, and safety of the condo, and my girlfriend who is also from the uk, is a bit worried that we may get broken into or something. are the houses safe and are there many burgularys here?do some of them have security guards? or is it certain areas which have trouble, just looking for a little encouragment reallly.

she is also worried about the bugs :o

    thankyou

    paul

  14. thanks all for replying, i have friends who have an "education" degrees, i went in a different direction, and got a job in engineering straight after school, and ended up learning a lot in my job which i stayed in for 12 years. whos to say that they are brighter than me because they have a degree? in my opinion i would say not. infact they are quite dumb sometimes :o

anyway i have enrolled today for the talk and text course so i shall see how it goes, i will give it my best shot!

    thanks again

  15. thankyou for your reply peace blondie, you have helped me in my decision. i think im going to have a chat at the place wo does the tefl. i think il give it a go. if anyone on here has a wp without a batchelors degree it would be good to hear from you.

    thanks again!

  16. hi, hope i have posted this in the right section, im a 31 yr old male and have been living in chiang mai for a month now, on a 1 year non imm o visa.

Previously i have worked in manufacturing, quality control for 12 years. I have been interested in teaching for a while and have a genuine interest in this, and would like to do a job that would be helping people. i have been reading through the posts for quite a while now and have a couple of questions i hope someone will answer for me, i have no degree but im seriously thinking about taking a text and talk 6 week TEFL course here in changers soon.

My questions are if i take a job here, i assume i will not be offered a WP, what are the chances of me being caught without one, and what could happen to me?

also is it possible that i could get a WP, if i have no degree, it would be nice to hear from anyone in this position, or is this impossible!

    please go easy on me.

  17. hi , managed to find the shop you told me about, the owner was very helpful, and a great english speaker too, yesterday i went to bo-sang not far away to tohe fishing park, was great got my arm pulled off by huge catfish! was only 100 baht. if you fancy going fishing give me a shout. im going to try the dam sometime soon il let you know how it goes.
