  1. Hi

over the past week or so, have not been able to connect VOIP calls to the US. Elsewhere in the world is fine. Am using the VOIPBUSTER program. Is anyone else having similar issues? Calls to the US giving normal ringing sound then apparently connect, but there is silence from the other end.

  2. Thanks for the useful information.

As it happens I do have a couple of Thai bank accounts, but I want a GBP currency account located here. Following up on some useful threads on this forum, it looks as if the Krungsri bank has the simplest requirement of merely supplying one's passport to open the currency account.

I didn't realise I could deposit the GBP cheque into my Thai Baht account, but I do now, though do not want the whole sum in Baht.

  3. I'm thinking the time is right to become fully "ex-pat" as far as UK authorities are concerned, but have not done this yet. I currently pay a small amount of UK tax on the pension I receive.

A UK pension will continue to be liable to UK tax regardless of where you live. The main benefit of being a UK non-resident is that UK savings interest and capital gains can be tax-free (if you do it the right way).

One cant be "fully expat" any more than one can be "partially dead". You either are or you aren't.

Would a start to "doing it the right way", be to deposit that cheque into an off shore account here in Thailand?

  4. HSBC closed last June (2012). There is no Barclays here. Curious why you want to open in Thailand, as you do not appear to live here. Try HSBC Jersey (HSBC International), although if you're a UK resident you are subject to UK tax.

I do live in Thailand, for 6 years now. The UK address is my correspondence address, owned by a close relative. I'm thinking the time is right to become fully "ex-pat" as far as UK authorities are concerned, but have not done this yet. I currently pay a small amount of UK tax on the pension I receive.

  5. Thanks to all for the useful info above.

Does anyone know at what point the original documents (passports, birth certs, marriage cert, thai id card) are sent back to me ? Is it soonest from Bangkok, or from Hong Kong, or with everything from London?

    Cheers.

  6. Hi

Around Trat and Chantaburi, I'll be looking for some reasonable quality wooden furniture - chairs, small tables and stools. I'm aware there are a few roadside outlets off highway 3, but none seem to have enough of the same - we need say 4 tables 16 chairs, 10 bar stools all in same style. Looking therefore for a factory outlet in the area. Any suggestions ?

    Thanks in advance.

  7. I had problems yes, and was unable to switch back.

Then thankfully one day, Yahoo mail said it was experiencing a problem and had to revert me - "Yes please" I replied.

Since, I've been tracking the beta issues, whilst staying on the old version. One guy mentioned if you switch your screen resolution way down to something like 640 x whatever, yahoo beta will be unable to display and ask you if you want to revert. Give that a try.

  8. great help mjn - I'd already verified that the mysql db content was trashed. I've now stuck some thai characters in there with edit in phpmyadmin and saw error message on save indicating the problem. I've changed the content collation to tis620_thai_ci and the content's now showing up in Thai.

So the question now, what collation should the entire DB be in to allow correct staorage of both Latin and Thai characters?

    Thanks for the help!

  9. Hi,

Trying to get Thai language content into wordpress posts and pages. Have installed th_TH.mo file into the wp-content/languages, yet my posts still come up with ?????. Have looked in the mysql db, and the same trashed content is there. I asked my web host if Thai language support is enabled in php - yes they say. Any advice please? Thanks!

Singapore, eh?  Did I miss a memo or something.  When did Singapore become part of Thailand?

A couple of years ago I bought a Shuttle computer from a shop on the third or fourth floor in Pantip.  I was looking for a replacement recently and that shop is no longer there, and I could find no one in Pantip that carries Shuttle.  Too bad really as I love the form factor.   I may have to wait until I make my next trip back to the USA and just buy a barebones unit and bring it back.

    Thanks for the ideas.

As it happens, I did email Ban Leong (SG) a few weeks ago. They weren't able to supply the barebones form, and the shipping cost was high too. I'm off to the UK sometime this summer and failing a purchase here (which I prefer for warranty) I'll get them from there.

Scanner (the supplier mentioned on the shuttle site) is on the 2nd floor, another place I found on the 4th floor also had the shuttle cube style only.

  11. Hi

I'd like to give you some encouragement. We have 2 cafe's. 1 is located on the beach on Koh Chang. Until 3 years ago we had desktops in there. The mobo's would corrode and die every year or so. Since 3 years we have used first generation eeePC's with 4gb SSD's and 512MB - upgraded 1 1GB of ram. We attach external monitors and usb keyboards, and we bring in a usb DVD writer whenever someone wants to burn a disk. The screens stay shut, and we have no heat issues. Have a stripped down windows XP which runs fast enough for your average holiday maker. All are still running fine, in fact are outliving some newer desktop machines in the other shop. When the time comes, we'll upgrade to similar.

Go for it, and good luck. Cheers.

  12. Thought I'd jump onto this thread, as some poster talked about vaccuum supply... maybe he can shed light and save me a trip to Bangkok... I have one of these systems on an Epson C90 - the yellow ink resevoir is obviously still 80% full, yet NO yellow ink comes out of the jet. The (hacked) sofware reports that the yellow tank is full. Is there anything I can usefully do in effort to fix this myself? ... cheers.

  13. The income does not have to be pension income. It can be any type of legit income. Any. Pattaya immigration has not been requiring money seasoning for subsequent extensions for some years now (800K method) but they changed their policy a few days ago. Now they require 3 months. As stated with an embassy letter using the combo method, there is no seasoning requirement.
My husband has been told by samui imm that although he is on his 4th retirement ext and has proof of income embassy letter for about 600,00 baht pa he still needs three months seasoning for the balance of around 200,000.......in spite of this not being written in the law. The official

said his big boss said it was easier to think that any cash requires 3 months seasoning!

Interesting, but confusing and contradictory, reading as I am due to renew (second time) my retirement extension in Laem Ngop in 7 weeks.

I have the equivalent of 500,000 in income and will get the certification from the embassy. I dont have the 300,000 in my account today, but it's ready to be moved at any time. Is the 3 month or 2 month seasoning relevant, can anyone confirm? Thanks.
