  1. In my opinion it's all about costs: AC hall, shop rent, lighting, fridges and coolers, employee. You have to sell a many bottled water bottles a day to cover that cost. Therefore 20-30 THB is reasonable. And it's a service and business. No profit = no shop = no service. 40THB is at least 25% to 40% too high agreed.

  2. No way that should have happened. The structures must have been grossly over loaded. And there was zero engineering. Hard to believe ...

Even in (developed) western countries, concrete poles alongside the roadway are not buried into the ground. The are set atop a platform base, from which the actual pole is bolted down onto. The base of course, is buried deep into the ground.

If a vehicle should strike the pole, it will not fully stop the vehicle, thus minimizing injury to the vehicle passenger(s), and the vehicle itself. The bolts holding the pole erect are specifically designed to break (at a certain force), so as to minimize the impact of any collision. As the pole falls, it may pull with it the cables between it and the next pole.

The tensile strength of the cable, and the fastener that binds it to the pole (and the next pole), determine whether the next pole will stand erect or also fall.

In life, dudu happens... in this accident, the cables could have broken away, but they did not; perhaps by intelligent design. Hence why all of the poles came down.

If the cables were power cables, then perhaps it was for the best that the cables did not snap and cause other damage (such as an electrical fire or an electrocution).

Amerasianex,, I do believe that you are referring to the US as a (developed) western country,, hahaha, don't make me laugh. In developed western countries like Europe we don't have this kind of power supply installation, so please give me a break.

  3. I'm having trouble imagining why anyone would be operating such a crane immediately next to power lines?

The flip flops should have protected him from being grounded, No?

Those top power lines are most likely the MV (medium voltage) distribution system operating at normally 22,000 volts, 33,000 volts at other grids. So flip flops will not be helpful if that is what they came in contact with.

the power lines above are 110,000 Volts and the ones below 33,000 Volts but you're right with this voltage flip flops really won't help

  4. PHUKET: -- The Immigration Police are applying more rigidly rules about notification of foreigners staying in hotels, villas or homes in Thailand.

And they also it in every single European country, at least as far as hotels are concerned.

At least on reader is not short minded and knows about the European registration obligation of hotels, guest houses.

    Thanks nicolas18

  5. It you are here on an extension of stay and the reason ends the extension ends and you must leave or apply for a new extension. You do not revert to anything. But if you have a valid multi entry visa you can use that for a new entry.

Ok, if this is true, then i take back what i said about some of the disadvantages of having extension of stay. If you can have BOTH

    1) 1 year Non imm multi entry visa, and

    2) 1 year extension of stay

concurrently without conflict, then it might not be a bad idea. A little redundant, but you save on the visa runs with extension, plus you have an additional safety net to remain in country in case things dont work out with your employer.

Previously, i thought it was only one or the other.

I'm used to people wanting only one or the other.

I do have q: can work permit be issued on an O, ED, or any other category visa besides B?

"...the 2nd best time to plant a tree is today." Sent from ThaiVisa app (Galaxy Note 2).

Don't know about ED visa type and work permit, but definitely you can have a work permit with a NON-O visa

  6. Ohh, again, all you folks came here a couple of months or years ago need to judge on Thai life!? If you don't like it go HOME NOW. They used to drive around with Salaengs before you're born and they still do. Most of them can't afford a car because 90% of you guys (so called Expats) complain everyday, all the time, how expensive this or that is. You are a poor bunch of Kee-Neeouws, actually not worth to talk about. You built or want to build your house, villa but you don't want to pay for it.. That's too expensive, that's not good enough etc. etc. Rural people here have to get on with their lives, send their children to school and sell their goods from their Salaeng (BBQ chicken, Som Tamm, Malako, Khai Thod, Guwee Thieaow, MaMuang etc etc) to make up their daily life. And of course they can't buy a car NOW for 500k+ THB when they make 300-500 THB a day. If you want to complain, set up a Fund to support all Salaeng Drivers to be able to get a car for the price of a Salaeng. But do not interfere in their own life in their own country! If you want to do so, you are at the wrong place and should go back where you come from. And please if you decide keep up staying here: SHUT UP and MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.. Thank you

  7. คอมพิวเตอร์

Computer. I just don't understand why they use the when the loanword has a t in it. Why don't they use one of the Thai consonants that actually sounds like a t ?

It would make much more sense.

Because this is a T (Tho Tauw) and I use it in my Name too when I write in Thai and all Thais pronounce my Name absolutely properly.

But then there is i.e. which is a T as well and I assume that it depends on the Location of the character which makes it more plausible to use ต or ท

  8. Yes, that's how it works. The re-entry permit is either for a single re-entry or for multiple (unlimited number of) re-entries, nothing in between.

Absolutely correct, but don't forget, it's valid only for 1 year, single or multiple and you have to use it once you've applied and got one, otherwise you have to cancel it before you apply for another one

  9. Why do you need your birth certificate for your move to Switzerland. A certified copy should be enough in most cases.

A assume you have a Canadian passport as proof of citizenship. You should also have a document proving your Canadian citizenship. Info here: http://www.cic.gc.ca...nship/proof.asp

I would think that the passport would be all that is needed for you move.

I agree with Ubonjoe, if you are a canadian citizen you need only your passport to move to Switzerland as a visitor.

You can check all the requirements for all kinds of Visas here: http://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/en/home/reps/nameri/vcan/ref_visinf/viscan.html

  10. What you have to do:

    1) go to your power meter look straight up and check if you have 3phase supply outside your house (4 wires on poles running, your meter is connected only to 2 lines)

    2) if yes go to the PEA with your old invoice and ask for an upgrade to 3phase for your house (PEA will install power cables to the new 3P-meter only and the meter of course)

    You have 2 choices for 3phase meters 15A(to45A) and 30A(to 100A)

Documents needed (depends on where you live and PEA): House register, Chanoote, ID card, old PEA invoice, House owners ID card, maybe Power calculation and/or electrical schema), but they will tell you when you apply for it.

    3) Before PEA will do the installation you have to upgrade your breaker panel to 3phase (you have to change the whole panel) and you have to bring out the main cables from the panel to the new meter position. If your main breaker is 45A or 50A/3P (should be enough for you) you need 16mm2 cable if it's up to 100A/3P it's 35mm2. There is nothing in between cable wise. Cable type in air is THW, if it runs underground it's NYY.

    4) Once your installation is done, contact PEA again and let them know, they will come and check it out and some time later change to 3Phase supply.

    5) Costs PEA approx. 30-45,000 THB for meter, connection, deposit, fees.

    Cheers

  11. I don't get it. If i add an appointment to Events say, a meeting in Bangkok while i'm in London. Of course it's local time. Why is there any need to change the time according to where i am? Just leave the time i enter alone!!

Now, when i check my calendar all my meeting times outside of Thailand have changed to Thai time. What is the point in that? Why do i need the time of a meeting in Riyadh to be displayed in Thai time while i'm Thailand? Why is that useful to anyone?

Obviously iOS change all events according to the place you are. It does store the time zone with the event but does not ignore the time change when switching the time zone. Probably a design fault in one way. Meaning an event should show the time zone when event is in another time zone and keep the original time.

  12. When you enter the time of your calendar event you can change the time zone for your entry, that's it.

And of course you will see the event in your calendar with a changed time (according where you are) but the stored event is still in the original time setting. see pictures
