  1. With the recent floral extravaganza in town, and the extra visitors, water pressure has been very low.

On the way to Doi Suthep, but still well within City bounds, 3 floors up, the head of the water was a trickle, or non-existant.

3 floors up sounds like you might be in a rental appartment or condo. If that is the case your choices are limited by what you can get others to agree to do. If you own or really control the property you have more choices. Which is it?

Do not go out and put filters in before all your taps as has been suggested. This would only effect the problem if if if it is caused by dirty water clogging the taps. You could check to see if this is the problem by cleaning one tap and seeing the change, if any. If it is a dirty water problem, one filter on the main line into the house usually fixes the problem and is much easier than a filter for each tap.

  2. Lawyer of Thaksin family asks AEC to postpone date of testimony

Mr. Weerapat Srichaiya, the lawyer representing the children of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Mr. Panthongtae and Ms. Pinthongta, as well as Khunying Potjaman’s secretary Kanchanapha Honghern submitted a letter to the Assets Examination Committee (AEC), asking for the committee to postpone the date for the siblings to testify in Shin Corp share transfer case from tomorrow to next month.

According to the letter, Mr. Panthongtae will be on a trip to Japan tomorrow while Ms. Pinthongta is currently taking an examination in London, England. Thus, Mr. Weerapat has asked the AEC to allow Mr. Panthongtae to testify on January 10th and Ms. Pinthongta on January 24th. As for Mrs. Kanchanapha, she will be on a business trip tomorrow, and the lawyer would like the AEC to reschedule the date for her to testify to January 12th.

Mr. Viroj Laohaphan, the head of the AEC subcommittee for probing the Shin Corp share case, said the reasons for postponement will have to be considered in detail tomorrow. If the reasons are justifiable, then the date will have to be delayed. In addition, the AEC will do it best to speed up the investigation process while maintaining the impartiality of the case.

Exam? Don't the schools in England close for Christmas/New Years?

Oh, shoot, they do not want to testify so why not take a trip instead.

Yeh, everybody just learned today that they can not make it to the meeting long scheduled for tomorrow.

Let's see what the AEC decides about the reasons and that will tell a lot about how serious they are.

  3. Sunset Asia will have good people, but they do not come cheap.

    Sunset Asia or Sunbelt Asia?

You have a problem big enough to want a lawyer but you want cheap? Difficult to find cheap and good anywhere in the world of lawyers.

  4. Thai Youth Glued to Their Cell Phones

    thailand_b.jpg

Nearly 96 percent of Thai teens spend up to three hours a day on their mobile phones according to a poll in Thailand.

A poll by Thailand’s Assumption University revealed that 95.7 percent of the Thai teens spend three hours a day on their mobile phones.

According to a survey conducted in the capital Bangkok, out of 1,262 teenage students, 88.3 percent spend three hours a day on their computers.

94.6 percent of respondents said they spend four hours in front of the television.

    Source: Zaman - 25 December 2006

3 hours cell phone plus 3 hours computer plus 4 hours television equals 10 hours each day. 10 plus 8 sleep plus 3 eat equals 21 hours per day. Great, that leaves 3 hours per day for real life, what a life. School on 3 hours per day????????? GFL

  5. Hi Phil

Very generous offer you're making, so here is a serious request.

You know those Magilite torches no bigger than a fat biro, that you can hold in your mouth, I need the bulb which is the size of pin head.

    I am serious seriously :o

Can't you get from that outdoor shop in Airport Plaza?

They have had a variety of mag light bulbs there in the past. Get two and put one under the spring in the cap that you remove to replace the batteries, since you have already used the one the factory put there for you, haven't you?

  6. I think I saw some in Kasems...

Thank you, DSK. Do you happen to know whether the Kasem Store has moved? I found it on Nancy Chandler's map and went to visit, but was unable to find it where she shows it as being, on Ratchawong near Chang Moi, near the Wororot Market.

It was still there a week ago just about 30 meters from the corner on the left, second or third shop from the corner. If you are looking for spirits, the Neimenhamen branch might, just might, have more.

  7. If I was to never carry my passport on me, the worst they would do to me would be a fine???

    Zach.

It goes like this. You get caught with an overstay and they put you in jail untill a court hearing. At court you are fined. If you can pay you go back to jail untill they transport you to the BKK Immigration Center or Jail. You pay for your transport there and for your police accompanyment air tickets too. Then you are in a Bkk jail where you sit untill you can arrange air transport out of Thailand and untill you can get the immigration police there to take you to the airport. Niether can be done fast.

  8. I would be interested too in simply hearing about what other farangs do.

As many posters have said, GIVE. Money in an envelope almost always is fine. Otherwise try to be sure that the gift fits the person or people. Once I gave booze but later realized that left out two in the group, who I subsequently learned, did not drink. No problem, it is the act of giving that is important.

  9. Overstay may be cheaper, but it is dangerous because if anyone from the 'official police' has eyed that you are overstaying, they are required to arrest you for being illegaly in Thailand. Something I would never risk.

Yes Ajan, you are correct, the downside of overstay is very large and not worth the risk even if the chances of getting caught are small. I should not have suggested otherwise.

  10. ask immigration, overstay might be cheaper than an extension. In some cases you can get the overstay at immigration before you are ready to go out, like pay in advance. you avoid the larger downsides of overstay but you still get that little overstay stamp in your pp but if anyone looks at it closely they would see that you paid before you really overstayed. it has been done this way when overstay was cheap, but you never know if it will be possible tomorrow.

  11. Govt may broaden transaction reporting to fight terrorism

However, the reporting requirement will be applied only to those with annual transactions of Bt100 million and more.

    -- The Nation 2006-12-14

yeh, terrorists always need a lot more than Bt 100 million to do anything so this will be very effective. they will all have to go to Singapore and pay a lot of extra money to have nomonies do the money transfers for them. Great idea from the new government.

DSI to probe four murders from 'war on drugs'

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) agreed Thursday to take charge of six cases, four involving people who were murdered or disappeared mysteriously during the Thaksin government's war on drugs three years ago.

Justice Minister Charnchai Likhitjittha said: "When request?d, DSI can provide a protection team for witnesses."

He was speaking after the DSI board convened a meeting and passed a resolution to investigate six cases under the Special Investigation Act.

The first case was the death of nine-year-old Chakraphan Srisaard during a police sting operation in Bangkok and the disappearance of his mother, Pornwipa Kerdrungruang, right after that.

On February 23, 2003, Pornwipa and Chakraphan were in a car when the boy's father got out to deliver illicit drugs to an undercover police officer. After seeing police at the scene, Pornwipa tried to flee in the car.

Police allegedly riddled the car with bullets, one of which killed her son Chakraphan instantly. Pornwipa fled the scene and has never been seen since.

The second case related to the deaths of Nikom Ounkaew and his wife Kanya. The couple from Nakhon Ratchasima won Bt6 million in a government lottery but did not tell anybody about their win. Neighbours were reportedly suspicious about their sudden wealth and suspected they dealt in drugs. On March 28, 2003, both were shot dead in Nakhon Ratchasima.

The third case relates to the death of Samarn Thongdee, who was gunned down on April 9, 2003 in Tak. Samarn's had no record of being involved in drugs or crime, but on his death some illicit drugs were suspiciously found in his pocket.

The fourth case was the fatal shooting of a woman in Tak on May 18, 2003. Ampaipan Rookongprasert also had a clean record, but illicit drugs were found in the sole of her high-heeled shoes at the scene of her death.

Justice Minister Charnchai said Thursday he would consult the Narcotics Control Board about returning the victims' assets to their relatives if it was proven that they had not come from illicit deals.

"Another case that DSI is going to investigate is the shooting of Fakruddin Boto," the minister said.

Caretaker senator Fakruddin was shot and seriously hurt in a driveby shooting in Narathiwat's Rangae district on August 6 this year.

"There has been no progress in this case after an investigation suggested that suspects were military officers," Charnchai said.

He said the sixth case that DSI would take on related to a com?plaint filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission against Power P Public Company Ltd for alleged stock manipulation.

Charnchai said DSI would look at accepting more cases related to people killed during the notorious "war on drugs", if victims came forward.

Is the problem Charnchai or the Nation reporter?

Most of the victims are dead so how can they come forward with their cases?

  13. i dont know why you all affrade now ? as there a new company who do computerzed car inspection and you can see in 30 min if the car is good or piss of shit.

The website identifies a location in BKK. Do they have a branch in Chiang Mai?

  14. Just think how much better value for money it would be if tourist weren't so blatantly ripped-off! :o

Not all tourists get regularly ripped off (yes, it happens once in a while to many). Some read a bit and learn how to avoid it. Others get the necessary information from talking to people who know more than they do. Others just know how to travel inexpensively. People get ripped off everywhere, don't they?

Headline: Thaksin's children to testify on tax case

Lawyer: Evidence will prove they did not lie :o

Mr Noppadol said the evidence - documents to prove there was a real transaction between the siblings and their own company Ample Rich - would be submitted to the tax agency this week.

    http://www.bangkokpost.com/topstories.php?id=114997

The Nation described the documents as "recently discovered". Perhaps recently created. Will the analysis of payments and receipts fit with the documents oor ?

  17. Seeking someone who sells or manufactures TOP quality sliding screen doors (we are tired of the flimsy ones)...

    Anyone?

    Aluminum or wood ?

Sorry. The brown aluminum ones. We had someone custom make these but the work was so-so and the front door which gets the most use is a real nuisance after only a year.

Big aluminum frame screens are a problem according to several contractors that I have spoken with recently. Light weight and wheels top and bottom do not make for smooth sliding. One guy said I should consider not putting them in.

Two things you might try before replacing what you have are getting the wheels re adjusted ( they adjust up and down at all corners) and if that is not satisfactory, replace the wheels with new ones which have ball bearings. These new wheels are just recently available here and not all contractors know/use them but I have seen them in one guy's shop and they are a very great improvement over the wobbely old ones. They fit onto the same adjustor unit so you only need to replace the wheels. PM me if you want contact info about the guy I know of who has them. He does the whole Aluminum window deal.

    good luck

  18. Why is Neeramit considered the best, when they make too tight fittings? I'd prefer someone who knows how do it right...

Let us know if you find one. Neramit can get it right but cutting things tight is in my experience, the norm for Thai tailors. Thus he and others need to be advised that you do not want skinfit policeman/soldier style. I am not sure he is the best because I have not looked about for tailors in recent years.

  19. I'm also interested. Could you give directions to Naramit tailors?

Down the street from the original Kasem Store, on the left side, about 3 shops before the first traffic light(where a left turn takes you to the Prince Hotel).

So, where is the original Kasem Store? Go down Chaing Moi from the moat. It swings left then goes over a small canal. Turn left at the first intersection after the canal bridge. Kasem is down about 30m on the left. Sorry to be so long, can't remember the street name.

If Naramit does not have the cloth you want, you can find a lot of cloth at the Warorot Market about 150 meters away.

Copy something that fits is best, otherwise the risk of a tight fit is high.
