  1. I made the trip from Union Mall/Central Lad Prao to Saphan Mai.

It was dry beyond Soi Sena.

There is some flooding (about curb level) at the Nam Wong Wan intersection.

There was still no visible flooding inside Kaset from Phaholyothin.

The flooded area reached as far as the Sena saphan. It was then clear to about Soi 47.

The road is flooded again (curb-ish on the main road), near Infantry 11 and the khlong. Soi 49 is in it.

Now the water reaches almost to Ramintra.

The traffic circle is open, but one side of the underpass is closed to traffic.

The bus I was on stopped while in Bang Khen and did not to to Saphan Mai.

I still won't make any predictions as to when/how much water will reach our 5-way intersection.

If anybody lives near Phaholythin32, and if Sena is still dry tomorrow, a "dry report" would actually make sense. Until Sena is a "wet report," it seems that the farther away the "dry reports" are, the less critical they are, eg. "It's dry on the surface of Mars." Of course, that's just me.

  2. IF this helps anyone, the

    thai rail ticket dot com

    site is up again.

As part of the reservation process, you can see what trains have seats. You can also pay for the ticket online and print it out at home. (I've done it. It can test your patience, but it can be done.) All that's left is reaching MRT and Bang Sue or Hua Lumphong.

  3. . . . the test of when a politician is lying is whether his lips are moving. Every department, party, authority and spokesperson for the opposition, the elected government, the BMA, FROC and now the water authority look like the Keystone Cops trying to operate a Cray supercomputer in zero gravity with their hands cuffed while telling knock-knock jokes to the press and passing it off as credible news.

Yes, but how do you really feel?

I thought I was old for remembering The Three Stooges and Abbott & Costello, but The Keystone Cops?

Anyway, how do people feel about reports from the south? It might help to know what cities still have hotel rooms and stocked supermarkets.

  4. There is a report this morning of flooding at Kasetsart University. Can anyone confirm/add detail?

    Funny you should ask.

I just finished shrinking my pix from this morning's recon of Phahon Yothin and Lad Prao.

I can't comment on the Viphadi-Rangsit or Nam Wong Wan sides of Kaset, but the only water I could see from the Phahon Yothin side was in the moat just inside the campus, and it didn't look like very much

The water is still in Saphan Mai. It has now passed Tesco and is lapping at the Ramintra traffic circle, which is just beginning to get wet. Is anybody else getting turned on?

There is also some minor flooding near Infantry 11 and the canal.

I took some pix, and the ones from the moving bus aren't that good. Still, they reflect the situation at about 10 this morning. The file name is the description.

Soi Sena had no traffic visible from Phahon Yothin.

I also explored Lad Prao as far as Big C (Imperial). No sign of water on the main road.

The water does not seem to be advancing at a regular rate. I don't see how anybody could predict when/if it will reach a given area.

  5. Central Lad Prao area all dry and I assume will stay that way now.

    Really?

Look at the post from johnlek a little while ago:

I found a good, probable quite updated flood map. It’s all in Thai, but it shouldn’t be difficult to imagine what is water.

    203.150.230.27/FloodMap/index.html?search=&locate=&xmin=11105110.04837066&ymin=1518928.8106264025&xmax=11303081.95162934&ymax=1639852.1893735975

You can zoom yourself around the map.

Do you see the exclamation point in the triangle at Ngam Won Wan, just above Rathayothin, which is just above Central?

Have you seen the flood barriers going up in front of businesses?

The water may be taking weeks, not days, to go shopping at Central, but I don't think it's going to remain as dry as a cigar without a humidor for much longer.

I'm heading back to Saphan Mai now, and then to Choke Chai. I'll try to post pix later this morning, and maybe a prediction.

    post-32175-0-11384700-1319935723_thumb.j

  6. 1 hour ago from Victoria Monument all the way to Emporium (Sukhumvit 24) all dry, a friend just went from Soi Cowboy and he did not see any flooding, traffic was low as well.

There won't be any flooding in that area until it passes Laksi/Don Muang airport. Can people stop giving redundant "it's dry" reports deep into bangkok?

No sh*t sherlock We know it's dry because the water hasn't passed certain levee points yet.

May I suggest that you ignore posts that don't apply to YOUR personal circumstances and let others decide what they want to do with the "it's dry" reports? I find it very helpful to know where it is still dry.

It's also very helpful to have a map handy when reading this thread.

It's also very helpful to be able to read a little Thai. If you don't, invest in a Thai map and an English map and start teaching yourself to recognize the names of places. It isn't that difficult.

Now, to get back on topic:

I'll make another trip up Phahon Yothin tomorrow, from the Lad Prao and Viphavadi-Rangist intersection to Ramintra. I'll photograph what water I see and note the time and place. I'll also try and visit Choke Chai 4. If there any special requests (eg, is Fruity open or does Tops have any cans of gas or is some soi flooded), PM me tonight. If I splurge for a cab, I might be able to investigate. (Tesco Lad Prao still had both water filters and gas this morning, if that helps anybody.)

And, while dry reports are as valid as wet reports, if someone reports that it's clear from the weekend market to Kasetsart, I see no reason to post "dry as a bone at Sena intersection" five minutes later.

  7. BTW, is it possible to use another simile aside from "dry as a bone"?

I tried "dry as a devout Muslim" though that might have been snipped.

    Dry as a devout Morman?

Dry as James Bond's vodka martini

As dry as Bangkok on election day.

As dry as frozen CO2 (dry ice, get it?)

As dry as a woman whose gynecologist looks like Nancy Pelosi/Pee Wee Herman (you get the idea).

As dry as an Egyptian mummy

As dry as an AA meeting

    As dry as powdered milk

As dry as Bob Newhart (other comedians will work, but Benny Hill is not one of them)

As dry as the Philippine National Treasury after one of Imelda's shopping sprees

I'm sure we can get creative.

Now, to keep this on topic, uh, um, er, got it!!

The zebra shrine (between Big C and Union Mall on Lad Prao) is as dry as Bacardi 151.

It is completely unprotected. I'll watch it to see how it fares during the coming week.

  9. Pub lic Health Advice:

re contaminated water, there are 2 options which can be employed singly or in combination:

    .....

Good advice. But store tap water now. Bath, bottles or if nothing else plastic bags (Thailand has plenty of those and you can practice that expert rubber band twist that stall holders use - it seems to keep liquids from leaking). A 15 minute boil of such water would still be appropriate prior to use unless your body is accustomed to local tap water already.

Speaking of bags of water, I still see stores that have run out of water but still have bags of ice in stock.

We used to have a 3-cylinder water filter, and the 3rd cylinder was black light.

Any idea as to which is more effective:

    A) Leaving the electric kettle on 24/7 filled with water

    OR

    B) Using the black light cylinder

    ALSO

I don't want to start a panic, but Tops at Central LP appeared to be out of canned beer.

A local 7-11 had four cans (until I bought them).

Shelves were a lot emptier than my last visit less than 40 hours ago.

  10. I just returned from my Saphan Mai recon mission.

Departing Central Lad Prao in a minivan, all is dry until after the Sena bridge and Kaset.

We crossed a canal which was very high and the homes there appeared to be partially submerged. A crowded minivan is not as accommodating as a taxi, and I don't have photos.

There is some minor sporadic flooding, notably at Rop 11 (Infantry Post 11). I taught at the school there a few years ago, and parts of that base become a lake. I'm not surprised to see flooding in front of the base.

Ramintra intersection/roundabout is still as dry as a devout Muslim.

The fun begins immediately after Tesco Lotus.

The van made its U-turn in between Tesco and Big C. I stood on the pedestrian overpass/flyover and took pictures looking both ways. One of them shows the water clearly, and the "C" on the "Big C" sign is visible. The water is not as visible in the pic looking towards Tesco, but is very much there. The "co" in the Tesco sign doesn't really show, either. Using a Nokia N73 instead of a dedicated camera was not the smartest thing I've ever done. I also snapped a shop opposite Central - look at the height of the barrier!! Maybe Dambusters was on cable recently. The remaining pic is of a cop shepherding his four-wheeled and biped flocks safely on their way to dry pavement.

  11. Near Union Mall and St. John

The tap water smells this morning. Now I'm concerned. I have no idea how effective our filter will be. I'm tempted to fill buckets from the swimming pool at night.

Now that the water supply has been contaminated, how many months is it expected to remain this way?

  12. In Pinklao, the situation is rapidly worsening. The floodwater levels are to around 1.3 metres and they are barely moving according to tides. There is noticeable panic among soldiers to repair the dykes.

My apartment's sandbagged, water-pumped and sealed barrier has been overrun. The breeze block wall-- just built-- is holding out at the entrances but every time the water level rises more leaks spring.

Any worse and the electricity must be switched off. Currently aiding the staff (9 people) with a desperate last stand.

The TV signal is knocked out, the water is compromised. The emergency chemical toilet has been destroyed by the flooding.

This might be the last time I can get on the internet, so I bid you good night and good luck. Situation hopeless, all is lost, we fight on. God Save the Queen.

Time to start playing " Nearer my God to Thee" ?? :-)

( Played as the Titantic was sinking)

Are you near Chao Phraya 3? If they flood as well, maybe you'll see the girls paddling around on their air mattresses.

Lad Prao near Central and Union Mall remains dry in spite of that little rain we just had. The Lad Prao Hotel (okay, it's a curtain hotel, but it's cheap and dry) is near Soi 8 if you're a refugee from tonight's rain. Maybe we should start another map, this one with markers for small hotels and guesthouses that you probably won't find with Google or Lonely Planet.

If I was abandoning my residence, I would head for Soi Ngam Duphli off of Rama IV Rd. Prior to Khao San Rd., Ngam Duphli was the world traveller ghetto. The Lumphini MRT is quite closeby. I think that ETC is the first guesthouse you come to, and eventually you reach the Malaysia Hotel and another soi with small guesthouses. They are spartan and under any other circumstances probably wouldn't be your first choice for a room.

  13. Still dry at Viphawadhi Hospital

Can anyone tell me if the water on Viphavadi has reached Ngam Wong Wan intersection or Kasetsart University yet?

The news on Ch 7 showed that the flood on Phahon Yothin has moved from Big C Saphan Mai to Soi 48 (about halfway to Tesco Lotus)

  14. Ch 3 just now had location reporting from Central Lad Prao and Big C Saphan Mai.

Central is closing an hour early. Merchants across the street are sealing doors, etc.

Even on Lad Prao Rd. I noticed activity today.

Another report from the river said people would watch the level very closely in another half hour.

Now the reports are from Don Muang (the inside of the airport is now flooding and electricity is being turned off) and the report is that the water is on the move and has reached Laksi.

They're now showing sports, so things can't be completely bad.

  15. I'm going to take a bus or taxi up Phaholyothin and see just where the water is and photograph it.

Once it finally reaches the triple intersection, I'm guessing that there won't be more than a few inches of water, if even that, once you move away from V-R and P Y roads.

With so many people living near Central Lad Prao, it seems that one of us could manage to be on the skybridge between Union Mall and Central to get a video of the water as it arrives and post it.

I'll try and post a pic by noon today.

A taxi agreed to take me to Saphan Mai, make a U-turn, and return. (He agreed after he understood that I just wanted to see where the water was and to photograph it. Should you try this for other areas, remember that some drivers don't understand the concept of a meter and will ask for double whatever the meter reads for going somewhere and then returning to the point of origin.)

The water has not budged from Big C. It was dry as a bone up to and past Tesco (coming from Sena). These floods remind me of earthquakes in California. No fun if you're affected, but not than many are affected. (And I do feel for those who have received evacuation orders.)

Tomorrow the water and electricity could go off, but today is just one more day of a month-long weekend.

  17. So far no flood water yet in the Central Ladprao area. This just as info for the ones living around this area.

This morning one of my colleagues went on his motorbike to check around and the first flood water was around 8km away from Central Ladprao.

Latest estimates what I just now heard on the new (hope we can believe them though) is that the first flood water will come in this area the day after tomorrow.

Speaking of Central Lad Prao, I visited Major Ratchayothin and The Avenue or whatever mall has the Villa.

It's dry there (no surprise), and the cab driver said that the flood water on Phahon Yothin is at Saphan Mai Market. (I wonder if he means Ying Choeren.) Villa had Perrier and some two-for-one packages of sliced ham.

Of more concern is a bulletin from our condo telling us to store water. They report that floodwater has been diverted into the "drinking water canal" and that the tap water is now very impure. (I've heard that the tap water in some areas is almost potable.) They also said that the water might be turned off. We are in between Union Mall and St. John U. on the even numbered sois side of Lad Prao Rd.

I'm living there too. Could you tell me which Condo thought the water might be turned off? How reliable to you think that is?

    Viphavadi Suite

I think it's reliable. Has there been a run on water filters? If not, why not? Concern about running water being cut off would be one reason.

Speaking of water, I was in one mini-mart today and the freezer was full of bags of ice. I guess people are so focused on bottled water that they don't even see the bags of ice.

For those thinking about getting the hell out of Dodge, the link to online Thai rail reservations is not working as of 7:30 pm. So much for being able to find out if trains have seats to Hua Hin or Hat Yai or whatever.

  19. Anyone go through asok / prom pong area this evening? They were sending only 1 sky train per 4/5 mins which resulted in a 'people' flood. Nightmarish

I'm planning on taking a taxi there from Union Mall about 4:00 a.m. tomorrow. The Villa Supermarket there is open 24 hours, and I'm hoping that Villa and other farang supermarkets won't be as hard hit by the panic buying. I can report back on Rachada-Pisek and Sukhumvit between Asoke & Phrom Pong then.

I left shortly before 6:00 a.m. from Union Mall to Villa Supermarket (Soi 33-ish) on Sukhumvit.

Traffic was fine. There was no sign of flooding.

The only clue that something was amiss was the sandbags in front of Villa.

Farang canned goods like Hormel chili were gone (or I couldn't find it). Local beans were in stock. Two liter bottles of milk were on hand, as were small bottles of drinking yoghurt and lots of cheese and the pricey sliced meats. And, of course, Villa sells alcohol at any time of day.

Skytrain seemed normal, and the subway seemed a little less crowded from Sukhumvit to Phaholyothin.

The ATM at the P H MRT still had cash.

Internet banking payments and transfers (with Siam Commercial Bank and Bangkok Bank) all have gone through as scheduled.

I'll check on Tesco Lad Prao and Tops (Central Lad Prao and Union Mall) and other Villas (Rachoyothin & Ari). Villa Soi 8 on Phahon Yothin might be better stocked because it's not near BTS and it just seems that most people would go to Ari now.

I was in Villa Ari yesterday at 2pm. Most of the usual stuff had sold out. There was no water (apart from small bottles of Perrier). I managed, however, to get sliced bread (the expensive French bakery brand). Cornflakes and Frosties none. I bought the last 10 cans of Schweppes tonic. Some types of Campbell's soups had completely gone. Generally, stocks were very low, and the place was busy with "panic-buying". Of course, there was plenty of wine.

Central Lad Prao has Krispy Kreme doughnuts (good for medicating spouses w/ PMS) and it's business as usual.

Tops had some water. Evian instead of Perrier. Oh, wow. But, they did have canned juices, lots of soy milk, even Hormel chile (pork, vegetarian, turkey) and the bakery is open.

A neighbor (if I understood her correctly) was returning from Tesco and said that there was water there but not much and was probably already gone.

My school has delayed it's opening a second time, and my boss is leaving Bangkok. Another sign? Where is Mel Gibson when you need him? Maybe we should start wearing hats made of tinfoil.

  22. Can you add your reports to the map?

Much easier to see the situation on a map,

    Thanks

(Green = OK, Red = Flooded)

    http://maps.google.c...178424,0.338173

I'm trying to do that. . . can't figure it out! Do you have to be invited as a collaborator?

    No - just edit it.

Sign in with a google ID. (If you don't have one, sign up for gmail and get one.)

    Click EDIT

At the top, on the left side, is a balloon and a jagged line and a hand.

Drag the balloon to mark the map.

    Fill in the info.

Click your entry on the list on the left of the screen.

Edit it again, if you click the balloon that appears, you will have a choice of colors.

I have no idea if I'm making any sense, but I'm an idiot, and I muddled through it, as have many non-idiots.

  23. This link is to site that has tide levels. (Not that I don't have full confidence in the local TV news.)

    http://www.myforecast.com/bin/tide.m?city=W48455&metric=true&tideLocationID=T0138

I apologize if it's been previously posted and I just missed it.

It shows that the high tides occurs shortly before dawn, and that it will increase by about 1/3 meter or 1 foot per day on Thursday and Friday.

So, it looks like Wednesday &/or Thursday will see the water from Saphan Mai reach Chatujak, and Thursday &/or Friday may see water from the river join the fun. The fun never stops. Has anybody peeked at the river level at Bang Sue lately?
