  1. I'll try to sum up my background as quickly and as clearly as possible.

I have been teaching under a temporary license for 2 years and just started my third year.

I recently got married and want to move to the USA with my wife. I believe it will take a year to get her a CR-1.

I am almost finished studying a computer science bachelors online. I plan to work in the US next year and eventually return to Thailand, but I don't know what visa to pursue when I come back. I think my current school would give me a visa again if I worked part time again, we always help each other out.

My question is, if my wife's CR-1 visa doesn't finish by next November and my visa runs out, do I need to get another 1-year teaching visa? Will that affect my 6 year teaching limit or are the 3rd and 4th teaching years combined?

I'm just worried if I come back to Thailand and can't get a temporary teaching license and be unable to stay long term in Thailand.

How do you know that it's wrong? Often there are different ways to spell a foreign word with Thai script.

@OP: What's your last name, in case it's not an English name, how is it pronounced, and how is it currently written in Thai script?

For now it's แมคกราซ but my wife would really like แมคกราธ. It's McGrath and has a "th" sound. She would prefer แมคกราธ. I didn't catch this last year when my work did taxes, as I cannot read Thai.

Stick with the Thai spelling you've been given, use it for all your documents.

There are no easy equivalents for many western names.

I see. Thanks! I might keep it the same if it's the only way, but my wife hates the "wrong spelling".

If it's possible to change the name in my taxes before declaring a name on the marriage certificate and on my baby's birth certificate it would be preferable, if anyone knows if that's possible.

According to my boss, my taxes use my English name but they also use the work permit documents which have the Thai name that I don't want.

  4. I'm working in Thailand and my work permit spelled my last name wrong in Thai. The last letter should ธ but it's ซ.

I'm renewing my work permit in November. I'm also signing the papers to get married and having a baby next month. You can see how urgent this is.

My agent is translating documents so I can get married, but he needs to know by the end of today if I'm using the ธ or ซ. I know I can change my work permit spelling at the labor office, but will my taxes be ok after that? I'd really like to change the spelling so my kid can have his name properly spelled!

    Thanks in advance.

  5. Hello, I have a unique situation.

I have been trying to get a work visa the past couple of months at Chaengwattana in Bangkok and finally got everything approved. I was then told to come back on the 17th to get the work visa. Simple, right?

The problem is, after being forced to get back to back tourist visas during this process, my passport (USA) is nearly full. There is one empty page that says "Visas" at the top, then three empty pages that DO NOT say "visas". I'm under the assumption that the one empty visa page and the 3 empty pages are enough to get the work visa and a re-entry permit. If not, I have a problem, as I plan to go to Bali for new years, which will would cancel the tourist visa that I am on now and also require me to have a passport with me (I cannot mail it somewhere during that time).

No matter what, I will need a new passport in the very near future as I want to continue traveling. I was wondering how I should approach this. For example, if I got a new passport, would that invalidate my old one including my tourist visa that I am trying to convert into a work visa on the 17th? Should I wait until I get the three month work visa, then change passports, then get the 12 month work visa? First I would need to set an appointment with the USA embassy, I feel like I don't even know where or when to begin! Whenever I get a new passport, I think it needs to have the work visa, but if the visa is on the old passport would that be vaild for working here and re-entering?

I hope someone can shed some light on this process as I really don't want to spend my holidays messing everything up and having to start this process over.

  6. Hello, I have been trying to get employed in Bangkok for about two months now. Before I was staying as a tourist and over the course of a year I been on two visa exemptions and a 60 day tourist visa. A little over a year ago I was on two visa exemptions as well. At this point I really don't want to do another visa run but might have to.

I am trying to become a teacher. I got the criminal background check, letter from the ministry of education, and affidavit stating my diploma is real and belongs to me. Last week I tried to get the non b visa and was told I need my affidavit to get a stamp from the consulate  which takes two days and that I would have to leave the country as I would only have 14 days and need at least 15. Later I found out I could have gotten an express stamp, which is really frustrating as I was 30 minutes too late to get the express stamp..

Anyway, I was thinking of trying to get a second extension which would be rejected, but I supposedly get 7 additional days. Could this work? Would I have the 15 days I need? The IO had told me she didn't know any option other than a visa run... Which I'm scared wouldn't work as my last attempt to get a travel visa in Vientiane  was denied.

Also, if I get the 7 day extension, my boss thinks the letter from the ministry of education wouldn't be valid because it says something about going to immigration last week. Has anyone else heard of this having such a short window? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. My last resort would be leaving until January and doing a border run which would be awful... I have all my stuff and pay rent here.
