  1. All ended well for us though as my daughters team got to the final for the girls secondary school team and did not have to play as the opposition school was kicked out of the competition for starting the fights (there was another fight the next day also) ...

good to see it was taken seriously and just a pity for the kids actually playing the football as it was not them that started the fights, but they are the ones that get punished also

  2. Was in Nathon at the "Koh Samui School" which is one of the biggest on Samui watching my 10 year old son play football / soccer in an interschool competition today. luckily 50 metres away from ....

In the next pitch were the big kids - 15 years up with lots of fans standing around cheering them on .. not bad football and very competitive. The fans from competing schools got a bit excited at one stage and started fighting next to the pitch (looked really funny as they were all wearing their scouts uniforms today - boys and girls getting involved, punches, kicks yelling etc .. but still at least one was taken away in an ambulance) ) ... and then one wasn't so happy so went to his motorbike, and pulled out a handgun and luckily one of the teachers grabbed it off him and held him down until the police turned up. Then the police sent all kids to classrooms while they sorted out the problems.

I left after my kid lost the game (not on the field but through a toss of the coin as it was a draw .. just devastating to my 10 year old but they don't do penalties at that age for some reason )

Its not just America where kids take guns to school, it happens in Samui as well.

    Another day in paradise.

  3. Go look at the Vivipos system distributed by Casio. It is in the Casio display at Makro. It is a western designed standalone restaurant system that allows the use of Thai language as well. If you have some understanding of computers it is relatively easy to set up, Casio set it up for you initially and you can email the Vivipos people in Australia or elsewhere and they are helpful. The cost is about 70,000 for the system including 2 printers (one for kitchen, one for cashier / bar), a cash drawer, touch screen and hard drive and software (cheaper with smaller screen or just using one printer). Being standalone, it means it cant be used for facebook, music systems, googling etc which can cause problems on a PC based system when staff are trying to fill in time... If you PM me, I can tell you where to go and have a look at one in operation.

Sounds good. Does this system allow for the hand held pads that waiters can input orders into?

Yes it can be used on ipad or iphone I think, .. more available if you search on it ....

it's the credit card machine that needs to be worked through the bank - but Vivipos deals with the 3% fee if you want to charge it and keeps record of what's paid in cash, visa or mastercard etc .... an International system designed specifically for restaurants

  4. I heard the latest one was actually a young woman that was tragically killed on 31st outside Rocky's, not a young man - unless there has been another one.

There were also 3 killed in Choengman a few days ago. A Thai adult and 2 kids on a motorbike, wiped out by a bad Thai driver ... near to the gas station.

I had wanted new sealed roads for many years, now I think we might be better off with the old pot-holed ones as there are too many innocent people being killed by fast drivers.

    RIP to all.

  5. Check with district office, if they have a permit. Just get enough people to sign a petition & approach , the district office with noise complaint.

I am sure you have enough home owners & hotels in the area to get this underway. Unlike another one that was in the hills ( Nalak's thread ) when at the time the complaint was only undertaken by a couple of residents willing to put their names on paper.

What I am telling you about a signed petition, is what I've been told by someone very well in the know, so started up & also give a copy to the Mayor.

Don't expect the normal process to work quickly, I understand it is the family of one of the mayors team who is doing this. They are very highly connected and I would expect they have passed out a lot of envelopes ...

  6. Even nicer to have the water heights per hour in stead of just the heighest and lowest of the day.

    See:

Tide table Samui - January 2010

going by the tide tabe for next week: November tide table

plus the weather predictions here: Samui weather

things are going to be unpleasant on the beach in Chaweng next week. Perhaps it would be best to get some sand bags ready and take the plastic furniture off the beach before it gets washed away or blown through the windows....

  7. While the plastic pier is certainly not pretty it is not the main issue along that stretch of beach. About 200 metres further down (toward Buddy Beer) the local Thais have dug out the coral and sand and built a small wooden pier where they bring in their fishing boats.

I have friends in the harbour board and they have taken these local people to court over the matter but the lamai locals refuse to demolish it and return it to the natural state. The harbourboard is trying to protect the beaches etc but the lack of legal clout to support their efforts and the time it takes through the system (especialy when it is locals) makes it very difficult for them. The plastic jetty is considered a smaller item of concern and while they may not want it to be there it is certainly better than the mess of a pier down the beach and is likely to be harder for them to fight.

We farangs on a forum are unlikely to be able to make much difference as long as the authorities continue to see Samui as its own little town to manage themselves, and continue to have long tedius court systems in place that mean people just give up after time.

  8. Checked that route already, no outstanding finance on it. Got all the documents from the bank that it was bought through.

The key document is the registration book which is similar to a house book. If you have that then it is unlikely to be repossessed by the finance company as they would still have the book if there was outstanding money on it. If you don’t have the book then repossession is a possibility.

If the previous owner had problems in court, then there might be chances the courts seized it for security. If the previous owner was a farang with a Thai partner (husband / wife etc) then maybe it was originally in the Thai partners name and they have taken it as they consider it theirs ... just never heard of a car being stolen on Samui so a bit unusual but could happen.

  9. Where’s Adam today? Still recovering from the all night rave? Why not explain the latest noise as it appears to be outside the bounds of your previous posts…

Chinese New Year.... TIME FOR CHINESE WHISPERS IS IT??

    Well Well Well..

It doesn't take long for people who know absolutely nothing about this project

    to start Knocking it !!!

You must have very boring lives to be waiting to laugh yourselves to sleep at someones demise!!

Who was told that this place is a new night club?????

Have they given you sleepless nights already???

It is in fact a sold Villa project with three 5 bedroom villas, Two 2 bed Villas and Four 1 bed Villas..

The restaurant, club house and bar will be the centre piece of this new Hillside Village which will not be finished

for at least another 2-3 years. The bar is open now while buiding continues to keep in touch with their customers

They are not promoting this place.. It is privately owned and built strictly for the owners, people renting the villas, friends

and regular customers of the old beach resort and nobody else.

They are not trying to pull people up the hill, the flags are there merely to show the people the way to get there!

Dreamfields was a one off party.. and just that!!!

YOU SHOULD GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT BEFORE YOU START SPREADING RUMOURS

If you have any quieres about this why not go and speak to the owners themselves??

Why don't you all go up there and have a drink... Nobody's stupid enough to make a nightclub there!

(though if you keep promoting it like one on here you may actually be attracting the wrong crowd!)

This is one of the most beautiful bar/restaurants on the island and will be surrounded by million dollar + villas (already sold)

Who would build a villa next to a nightclub..?????.

And this is to the poster that's got nothing better to do with his life than bore the pants off people with

this complete cock and bull story..

"Why don't you chill out dude.. because nobody has had or will have sleepless nights!!!"

Well SamuiJens, You should come and see me and we'll talk about getting what you pay for.

My name is Adam, I've built 6 villas in Thailand over the past 9 years.. lived here for 17 years and know a Lot of people.

Come and see me up at the Gecko I'll be there Friday and introduce you to all the owners

and our local friends and family (if you don't know them already)

.... Or is Roo still Hallucinating....

  10. theres one rule out here dont lend money to any one, to my cost I have learned the hard way, farangs and thai the same full of promises when you lend the money, but when it comes to paying back same old excuses,so the moral is DO NOT LEND TO ANYONE

I tend to agree with the general rule of thumb - Don’t lend to anyone.

But I have been on both sides of the fence on this one, and have borrowed from some farang mates to get through a certain blip, and then found that the blip took longer to work through and things did not fall into place as expected. Eventually the money was repaid but it took much longer than expected, and some of the reasons for the delays were bad luck, others were probably bad decisions on my part but many were also due to the unusual business environment in Thailand / Koh Samui. Luckily the mates were very patient and because they were living in Samui understood the reasons whereas if I was living back home and got some of my excuses, I would think I was a crooked liar.

So I would say, please consider helping a friend in need as business in Thailand is difficult at times, but obviously make sure you are not desperate for the money to be returned and if possible get a written agreement to repay or some other form of security. Even an English language loan agreement can be enforced in Thailand as long as it is structured properly and is witnessed (and is not at exorbitant rates of interest).

I am reluctant to lend but because of the graciousness of the person who lent to me once, feel it appropriate to consider doing it for others.

  11. Perhaps someone from Bangkok Hospital should reply to some of the issues raised on this thread ?

    I agree,

My good friend who is a reasonably large chap went to Bangkok Samui Hospital under approval from his Insurance company to have a small operation. Only to spend 3 days in there, 6 hours on the operating table under anaesthetic to be told that they could not do the operation because of what they called his “unusual anatomy” – I’m not a Doctor, but it only takes one look at the 140 kg 2 m guy to see he is a bit larger than normal.

Anyway, they had to end up flying him to Bumrungrad a month after to try and fix the initial problems and also fix the new problems caused by shoving things down his throat which did not quite fit. I have seen his letter to the Insurers who did pay the £900 bill as well as for Bumrungrad … here’s his letter to the Insurers:

    Dear <Insurers>,

I am less than impressed with Bangkok Samui Hospital, <Insurers> having been billed <£900 at a time when the baht exceeded 70 to £1> for what was effectively 3 days bed & breakfast. They were unable to conduct my operation because of what they called my ‘unusual anatomy’ but I’m baffled as to why they didn’t realize this until I was on the operating table.

    Please note:

    1. I suspect they didn’t have a long enough laryngeal tube for someone my size.

    2. I belched 6 times once I came round, my stomach being filled with air on the operating theatre.

    3. I was anethsatised @9am & was still ‘out’ @3PM when my wife arrived. She wasn’t told they hadn’t conducted the operation!

    4. I woke up briefly in ICU surrounded by some worried faces. I think something went drastically wrong but they got away with it.

    5. I was violently ill for 24 hrs with blood in my vomit.

    6. My throat has been badly injured on the inside & has yet to heal.

With Thai culture being the way it is they simply chose to discharge me in the belief that the problem will go away. My <initial problem> returned with a vengeance this morning (it had gone down due to no food) & continues to cause discomfort.

    ...

just another example to add to the list.....

  12. This money is available to all stranded tourists that have a eparture ticket dated to depart during an airport closure day. The money is for accommodation and food only.

Contact TAT or your embassy for details.

If anyone has further details im sure it would be benificial to many

Where did you hear this? I find it very hard to believe in a country with no social welfare.

B 2,000 per day X 100,000 stranded tourists...?? Are you sure?

Many threads on here concerning this, yes its true, I'm a guest myself of the TAT free upmarket hotel plus three meals a day

What about a local expat going out for a visa run, can we claim all the same benefits? When does the daily allowance stop (it might be worthwhile making the ticketing process difficult as B2,000 covers the overstay fine and some...)

  13. I was told it was Bill Gates, again...

No, no, you are quite incorrect ... it is the new company vehicle recently purchased by Millennium Utopia Group who have reached over 51% sold out on their special project, and felt it was appropriate to purchase such an extravagant item. Its main purpose is to take the executives on jaunts to Pattaya and Bangkok on a whim but is also kept fuelled up in case any investor turns nasty and the execs have to make a quick exit. I believe they affectionately call it “Ed” – same as the name of the talking horse which the execs often sound like after a night on the beers, but more appropriately fits their business when linked to the Company Logo – MUG-ED.

  14. Beachedwhale, I am an elderly gentleman here in the Land of Sly Smiles on a retirement visa. I too have thought about owning a little piece of this unspoiled island, but am apprehensive about the requirements to actually own land here. I'm confused about all this, "Starting a business with seven Thai employees or something and then having all the voting rights or rigging the votes so that I am always like Steve Jobs" so that as a foreign devil, I can own the land.

Or is it that I can only "own" one of your fantasy villas for 30 years? Or is it 30 plus 30?

I just can't part with that kind of money, bargain basement that your offer is, without knowing that I can will this little sliver of heaven to my heirs, should I make any friends between now and when I die.

    Dear Mark.

Thank you for your interest in Millenium Utopia Group - one of the oldest and most respected developers on Koh Samui.

You can own it for as long as you like - "up to you". As we have no titles or contracts it is best that you put the full details in your will as we will probably not be sober enough to find your heirs, and actually probably wont even notice your passing unless you happen to be in the bar at the time.

We should meet up to discuss the transfer of your savings into my beer account, but we have a policy of not making any appointments or handing out our mobile phone number. That way we can never be accused of missing an appointment, not answering calls or not returning calls. It is totally up to you to find me. If you make the deposit first, it will certainly make it easier for you to find me as I will be in a bar for a few days in a row and some of the time I might actually be having a quiet sleep in the corner - just ask the bar staff if they have seen a "foreign MUG, spending a lot on beer, making loud noises, abusing the staff and some other foreigners, possibly making a mess and then sleeping it off" - I am certain there are not many people like that in Samui.
