  1. given their national philosophy, you might think Thais would be good to animals but they are – if anything – even worse than the Chinese.

Zoos anywhere are rarely good for livestock but here they are a disgrace – see pic above of three or more disparate species in a cage smaller than a BKK hole-in-the-wall bar.

Yes, I admit I have put the wife in with crocodiles – not for a photo but to get eaten*.

But the animals are so drugged/effed they don't notice her. I've seen kitchens in China taking more care of live menu items than zoos in Thailand.

*I mean for them to eat the wife, not the other way round.

The Thai Embassy in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam has also been issuing the 12 month, multi-entry non-O for marriage without financials with latest reports also being quite recent.

However, their website indicates that the O-A is the only option for a 1-year and requires financials. There's no listing of the non-O for marriage, 3-month single OR 1-year multi.

Not so (marriage) as of just now:

The validity of a visa is 3 months for Single Entry Visa and 1 year for Multiple Entries Visa.

  3. From recent observation (in BKK) I'd say the supermarkets are deserted compared to Before the Ban. In particular, drop in people shopping for fresh veg and fruit - bulky, needs bags.

And online grocery is simultaneously booming (I just got an order where the first available delivery slot was two days hence) - I'd say that's a result of the Ban. Yes it all arrives without a clutch of bags, but you only have to carry from your door, not all the way home.

If I'm right, and if the Ban stays, it could be the end of selecting your own onions or potatoes.

You can pay all bills with any banking app. Why make your life difficult ? One app...pay all

Not quite, all sorts of dumb exceptions. Eg: I can pay my phone bill from TOT with online/app via Bangkok Bank but not SCB. TIT.

What has conveniently been forgotten is the development of Gen IV nuclear reactors, because the greenies start farting blood by even the thought of it. "Greens" are the worst enemy of earth. The new reactors would solve the energy problems easily. Luckily at least Bill Gates is on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TerraPower

Yes, varying views on nuclear because when it goes wrong it goes very wrong. France depends on it, next door Germany is backing away. But if Bill Gates is anywhere near it, I'm against it. Try switching a nuclear power plant off and on again...

Anyway, hydrogen is a more easily sustainable power of the future, 'cept there's not enough profit margin in something that occurs naturally.

  6. ALL construction sites pollute. Cement/concrete is the world's third worst polluting industry even before you take account of cr@ppy working practices in places like LoS.

And electric vehicles are only as clean as the generation of the electricity to run them, which seems to have been conveniently forgotten almost eveywhere in the headless-chicken race to make Elon Musk richer.

People like you aren't wanted in Lumpini. Go to Soi Cowboy.

So where in Cowboy can one relax in peace, perhaps with a  modest brass band, and sip a beer all afternoon without being hustled?.........

Seriously, Lumpini was (a long time ago, admittedly) just idyllic for me, the wife (who could natter with the restaurant people AND eat non-stop) and my kids (who could terrorise the iguanas) for a quiet weekend afternoon. Farang guests thought it just perfect and a highlight of their visit.

It never once got rowdy, although one suspects that was the pretext for closing it. The owner, having spent 10+ years working in that environment, was last heard of behind a counter in a Pratunam department store. Poor woman.

  8. " I used to go running with the wife in Rama 9 Park when I lived in Bangkok. "

    Did she ever catch you?!

Rama 9 is interesting because early and late in the day it's free but for most daylight hours it's 20(?) baht to get in - which of course makes it relatively even more quiet. And despite my previous post, it does have a restaurant, although not serving beer which rather defeats the object.

  9. Once upon a time there were restaurants in parks (like Suan Lum) where those who don't like it too hot could relax and watch the view with a beer and some grub. But that was considered a bad idea and banned............ That's why I don't go there any more.

Lumpini, Suan Rot Fai and others are perfect places for German-style biergaerten - tourist attraction as well as for locals. It's not too warm under a sunshade with a litre of beer. Where's TAT when you need them?

  10. Some years ago I was involved with a survey carried out by farang medics (not MSF but similar) that went to a lot of hospitals in many provinces and looked at actual admissions and outcomes. The results then were far worse than anything being discussed here because (eg) multiple sub-teens without helmets, insurance or licences, on motosy or in cars, tended not to be recorded - especially further from the main cities. Why bother to make up a file for someone who won't survive and won't be treated? (still relevant in Thai facilities - if it's 'obvious' you won't survive, they won't bother to start trying).

The extrapolated 'actual' death figures if you included all those brought into A&Es in whatever state (as a direct result of RTAs) was around a barely-credible SEVENTY thousand per year.

Before you all shout, this was a statistically done private survey based on actual responses from actual medical staffs up and down the country.

Since then, there have (don't laugh) been some improvements in helmet use, but also more vehicles. I doubt the real stats have changed much - we're talking +/- 200 per day deaths.
