  1. erm... not being directionally gifted... its 10 mins from the super. I think the route above goes around it, (hence 'borderlines').

On secnd thoughts, Ob Khan is rubbish, dont go there.. ooo very far, very Mai Soay.. stick to what you know.. :o

Last time i went there, there was a minibus full of students who decided to go swimming in their university blouses. Truly distasteful. I was shocked.

You must have a very fast bike :D I reckon it's near on an hour from the super - Anyway! It's a good spot..

  2. Where's the place 10 minutes outside the superhighway?

Yes, shitty photo of a san k lake, but it was a shitty weather day! - fireworks in the background.

so where are these "nice" lakes in san kampheng?... erm... you have to drive around... giving directions to a spot in the middle of a forest would be pretty difficult.

The place by the super highway..

Its about 30km South of Chiang Mai, and takes about 15 mins to reach by (big) motorbike. Not shown in the photos are pools/stretches where you can swim. Huay Teung Tao is OK, just commercialized, thats all. Family friendly, but... YAWWWNNN. Somewhere i have a photo of me skinny dipping here :o

    Ob Khan

You may take the routes around the area of the National Park, which are used as borderlines of the National Park, including Highway No. 1269 (Hangdong-Samoeng), Ror.Por.Chor. Road No. 12066 (Samoeng-Borkaew), Ror.Por.Chor. Road No. 12040 (Borkaew-Maehey), Ror.Por.Chor. Road No. 12039 (Maehe-Sobwin), Highway No. 1103 (Sobwin-Sanpatong).

So basically it's no where near the super highway!

  3. Hello

Recently, I have developed an interest in paintings. I am not that good as I am in the learning process. I started with water colors and now I have switched to oil paintings. Well, my first oil painting turned out to be really good. I painted an old lady sitting in a garden. Now I want to do some abstract work. Tell me, is it OK to do abstract painting on my own or do I need to take the help of an expert.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter can teach you everything you need to know about abstract painting. PM me if interested she's 300Baht per hour.. :o

  4. Hi, I want to produce a small plastic item. About five inches by three inches and about an eighth of an inch thick (13mmx6mm by 3mm). Black and chrome finish.

Are there any factories in Chiang Mai where this could be done in relatively small quantities - say a few thousand pieces?

    Just thought I'd ask, thanks.

Or (130mmx75mmx3mm) approx. Just to split hairs! :o

  5. Sledge....

Just returned from town and picked up 10 one inch baby 'blue lobster' crayfish [mixed sex] for 100THB ea and will try them in an unoccupied cement tank and see if I can multiply them...or at least keep them alive. The adult male was 4+inches [not counting the claws] and a beautiful irridecent blue color and if they are not good for food, they are beautiful in an aquarium

Still on the lookout for the 'giant reds' from OZ.....for food.

Good stuff! if they grow into edible monsters let me know please.. Sounds like quite a fun thing to do! Maybe I should get out more... :o

  6. Thanks.....but are you refering to a pet shop in Komthien market or the small soi with pet shops near airport plaza?? and the crayfish..were they the big red ones from OZ?? That's the kind that I want, if possible.......

the place near Airport Plaza.. If APP is behind you and you were going to the moat ( Mahidol road ? ) you would take a right turn at the first U turn, I think it's more or less parallel with the big electrical place next to Toyota. Go down there a few hundred meters and it's the last aquatic shop on the left. The pet market is behind this row of shops. To be honest I'm not sure they will have what you want, the ones we bought were cute little critters ( a blue / green colour and very small ) for my daughters amusement. However if you went there with pictures they might know where to get them..

  7. In an earlier thread there was mention of a seafood restaurant that had live crawfish in a tank for sale and i can't find the posting....so I'm putting it out there again.

Does any one know of any live crawfish [yabbies] in CM and where?? Or have there been any sightings in any of the markets?/would be a lot cheaper than paying the kilo price of a restaurant!

I want to try my hand at breeding them for home use and if successful, will share........

    Thanks in advance.

I've bought them from the pet shop ( Aquatic ) on the main road in front of the pet market before. They usually only have a few but might be able to get more if you ask them. The shop that had them was the last one ( fish shop ) on the left hand side..

  8. Recently back in CM and noticing how terribly slow my internet is with my laptop and AIS Edge service.

It seems to be just as slow as it was a few years ago before all of Thailand had been upgraded to Edge. I'm normally in Phuket, and speeds are much faster when I surf there.

Isn't 3G here? Have users noticed a slower GPRS/Edge connection speed too? Do I need to temporarily subscribe to 3G to benefit from the upgrade, and is it worth it? I seem to remember quite expensive price differences between GPRS and 3G.

Any comments or experience is appreciated.

As far as I know 3G is just within the moat area, it's not Chiang mai wide yet, from memory it's expensive and switches to edge when you out of range. Which will be most of the time. Perhaps it's improved - feel free to correct me.

Cat has a newish CDMA solution - you'll need to buy a USB attachment for your laptop circa 10K and pay approx 800THB per month. It's supposed to be pretty good, faster than the old CDMA solution via a PCMCIA card. I don't know the Nationwide coverage though, expensive if you can't use it when you get back to Phuket :o But good for Chiang Mai!

  9. place on the baan tawai rd - left hand side just before you turn into tawai proper.

copies of the student stuff on walking st - but much cheaper.

or take a copy of something you like to walking street and get someone to copy it.. I got a 2.5mx2.5m version of an abstract piece using different colours to the original for 12k! It's stunning, was duplicated from a small photo and done in a week. Sadly not an original but I didn't have the spare 500K GBP to get the original so it's worked out ok for me..

  10. Loads of guests last night in all hotels - judging by the lights on in the rooms, seen from a viewpoint in the new drinking complex next to Pantip...

Whats the new drinking complex like? Are there many tenants? I've not driven past it for a while but the last time it looked empty ( as in no bars or customers / people ) It would be good to find a new watering hole.

  11. At one corner of the upper floor at Index is a separate "shop within the shop" that displays high-end office furniture - a lot of it imported from Italy and the like. In a totally different league from the basic Index ranges - and with high prices to match. Excellent choice of chairs.

"Modern Form" on the super highway also has very nice ( expensive ) office furniture. It's the big building with blue flags maybe 2 or 3 KM's from the Amari lights.

  12. always thought strimmer was a brand name. maybe not then.

incidentally goats are cheaper and also provide you with lovely nourishing milk. they're perhaps not as precise at shaping your borders though.

"weed eater" and "weed whacker" are brand names for a strimmer, rather like "hoover" is a brand name for a vacuum cleaner.

    I like goats :o

  13. go to top of pornping hotel..open air restaurant. you may need to book.

main place is between taphae gate and all along the river... lots and lots of people. to be honest you will see it everywhere you go...

will tiny kids... if you want to avoid the crowds stay away from river... maybe try the night bazaar? close enough to the river, but not crazy like on nawarat bridge. (the main spot in town)

Where does one float ones boat in the night bazaar?

  14. My Son needs to source some iron troughs, the type that they have in temples that the small incense sticks and yellow candles are placed in once the troughs are filled with sand.

Does anyone have any idea where he can find a company that makes or could make them around these parts?

    Many thanks

    TP

"Borrow" one from a temple... :o

  15. Into which of your two types do you fit vehicles such as the Jeep Cherokee, Toyota Landcruser and Landrover? Or do you not consider them to be SUVs?

Well, first and foremost I don't consider them to be vehicles that are currently widely on sale and competitive in Thailand. I did think to include a 'dedicated 4WD' type category, in which would also fit the 'actual' Mitsubishi Pajero (not the 'Sport') and some of Suzuki's 4x4 vehicles. But none of those are assembled in Thailand and come with huge price tags, if you can find them at all.

But secondly, to answer your question: No, those I don't consider SUV's. :o SUV = Sports Utility Vehicle, a type of raised estate made to look like a rugged outdoorsy kind of rig but actually aimed squarely at soccer mums. No, I would not put a Land Cruiser, Classic Pajero or Land Rover in that category, though the Freelander came #$*(* close. :D

Chances are if you go to a Jeep or Land Rover enthusiast's gathering and refer to people's rigs as SUV's they'd smack you. :D

All 3 are SUV's - Wikipedia says that in it's opening description of them so it must be true ! :D lets face it - it's a stupid question! A Porsche Cayenne or Range Rover for circa 10mill or a second hand jeep for 200k - How long is a piece of string godammit! ( and yes, I know it's the distance between the two cut ends... )

I'd like a boat can you recommend one for me :D
