In reference to the dependent for a retirement extension of stay, Immigration will no longer issue the visa for a farang wife.
By the way, Sunbelt, is it really just foreign wives this applies to or should that read "spouses" ?
If yes to "spouses", the title of the thread is misleading.
-
If it is to be rigorously applied this really is a very stupid regulation.
Must agree with that. Looks like an attempt at money-spinning, pure and simple.
However, many of the older foreign couples I see are doing very useful stuff in their communities, in addition to feeding plenty of money (and employment) into local communities just by being there.
I don't see an overall gain for Thailand in this one.

But let me say this here..... on the east side of the river on Thanon Charoenrat, on this past Friday, some one from the electric company came by and actually told me that the power would be off on Monday from approx 9AM to about 3PM.
THIS IS A FIRST !!!! THANK YOU ELECTRIC COMPANY Maybe there is hope afterall...
Indeed, excellent.
.. living in Chiang Mai and/or Thailand and being worried about bacteria..????????I don't knowingly eat rotten food. (Nor were you planning to.)
Chiang Mai is positively sterile in comparison to other some places I have lived .

I would have thought this would have become a major topic on this board as again it begs the question of whether the Thai Government wants foreigners in their country. I spend on average 600,000 baht a year on living expenses which go directly to the Thai economy, I can asure them that this may be the last year that I am so generous.
Well said, dalmatian.

http://www.fsis.usda.gov says,
"Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. The refrigerator will keep food safely cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened. A full freezer will hold the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed. "
I prefer to err on the side of caution when it comes to ingesting bacteria.

Nobody was traumatised.
I guess nobody has an answer to the original question, about which I was simply curious.
-
Yes, we did make the mistake of opening the fridge, not expecting the power to be off for so long.
I found that some dips (baba ganoush, taziki) from Jerusalem Felafel had gone off. They don't contain preservatives. That told me to be cautious. I'd throw out milk, for example, just to be safe.
-
Are you a fridge salesperson ?
-
Don't throw away any foods...
We had to. You could smell the stuff that had gone off. As I said, the power was off for 7-8 hours.
-
Whoopee, a power outage in Chiang Mai.
I have not lived here very long.
An hour or so does not matter, but 7-8 hours means you need to throw out perishable foods. So, if you have lived here for a while, may I ask how often these lengthy outages tend to happen ?
-
We had no power from around 11 pm to 6 am. I could hear people working through the night.
We have had some brief outages before but nothing this long. How often does this tend to happen ?
*If you slept through it all, be cautious about what you eat from your frige !

Thanks for the reply.
Does anyone have suggestions for booking flights online ?
-
We will be setting up a business. There's no Thai wife involved.
We were advised we must leave Thailand to change the visa type.
Can anyone confirm or deny ?
-
Bumping and adding a question : recommended airlines ? Websites for online bookings ?
-
If like Krikrik you are here on a Tourist Visa you do not need to leave the country but instead go to the local immigration office and apply for change of visa. Fee 2,000 Baht.I'm interested in the answer to this as well. I'm a Brit, also based in Chiang Mai, looking to get a non-imm B on the basis of being married to a Thai national. For your situation I suggest you change to a non-O visa, not non-B, then apply for annual extension of stay for support of Thai wife (fee 1,900 Baht). Advantage of non-O with extension: if you get a work permit and later leave your job, your extension of stay remains valid and you can remain in Thailand.

Maestro
Wow.
I had read about B-Visas, O-Visas, and no end of other visas as well as Non-immigrant Visas, but have so far not heard of non O or non B visas ...
Come to think of it, I have never heard of Immmigrant visas; only Non-immigrant visas.
Maestro, are you playing evil games ?
-
What do you recommend as the best place to head to convert from Tourist to Non-Immigrant Business Visa, from Chiang Mai ?
Hoping to keep the time spent down to no more than a few days - is that possible ?

"Local bodies are not ineffective enough to run the city in line with the plan to develop Chiang Mai into a leading city of the region"
It must be a truly cunning plan that relies on the ineffectivity of officials.
The level of ineffectiveness required to fulfill the plan is beyond the capacity of CM ? What is the place coming to ?
Perhaps there are other contenders for the position of "leading city of the region" with the necessary capacity for ineffectiveness ?

Thanks for the info - might not know anything otherwise !
Watching this space ...

Well done and thanks, taxexile.

Is the story in the Thai news ?

Given the amount of saturating rain we have had in the last few days all over the north, had you considered the possibility that the embankment could have collapsed, causing the train to plunge into the river, and the poor driver washed away?
Indeed.
Driving conditions are hardly ideal.

Water in my area has vanished overnight. Where does it all go ? It's rather pleasant, in fact, if you ignore the mud, as the air's cool and fresh.
I hope there are ways of saving some of that beautiful rain. It would be such a waste not to.
However, it seems other places are currently underwater .
Hope everyone is OK and damage can be kept to a minimum.
Keep us posted if you can.

(
should read "sports", of course.)aquatic spots.dark black totally heavy raining in san kampheng. seems better here in the muang. wonder how high the water is at the ping.Perhaps some people will post photos. There sure has been a lot of rain. Easing off now, perhaps , at 12.30 p.m.
At Narawat bridge 2.56 Metres at midday, bank overflow at 3.7 MetreSorry, not clear on how to read that. Does it mean if the level reaches 3.7 it will overflow ?
The rain is interfering with the "quote" function . EDIT : better now .
