  1. In an about-face, the public prosecutors have decided not to pursue money laundering charges against the former secretary of Khunying Potjaman Na Pombejra, the ex-wife of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and her husband in connection with the 9 billion baht loan granted by the state-run Krung Thai Bank to the Krisda Mahanakorn real estate company. On July 30th last year, former secretary Kanchanapa Honghern and her husband lodged a complaint with the prosecutors seeking justice over the money laundering charges. Both are living in exile abroad. Spokesman for the Office of the Attorney-General, Itthiporn Kaewthip, told the media today that the Office of special prosecutors for special cases decided to consider their plea because it represents a “new fact,” adding that the prosecutors found no oral evidence or facts to prove their involvement in the loan scandal. 2. People eat food at a flooded restaurant, where patrons stand up from their tables every time the waves come in, on a river bank in Nonthaburi near Bangkok, Thailand, October 7, 2021. REUTERS/Soe Zeya Tun By Juarawee Kittisilpa NONTHABURI, Thailand (Reuters) - Riverside restaurant owner Titiporn Jutimanon was convinced a bout of flooding in Thailand could be the end of a business already struggling from the pandemic. But with the rising tide of the Chao Phraya river this week came an unexpected opportunity. Instead of closing for the floods, Titiporn's eatery is making waves in Thailand, staying open for customers who are revelling in shin-deep dining, and the thrill of avoiding the rush of water set off as boats go by. "Customers absolutely love the waves," said Titiporn, who runs the Chao Phraya Antique Cafe in Nonthaburi, north of Bangkok. "What I thought would be a crisis turned into an opportunity." Videos have gone viral on social media of customers sitting on drenched chairs, taking mouthfuls of food as long-tail boats buzz by, then moving out of the way as waves hit. About 30 northern and central provinces have been hit by flooding in recent weeks, raising levels of the famous river that flows through Bangkok. Titiporn's business was forced to close during COVID-19 lockdowns, but she's glad she decided to brave the floods. "Not only do they love the atmosphere and the barbecue pork and the view of the sunset ... the flood became an additional unique factor," she said. "I feel so lucky that the customers love it, the flood wasn't a challenge for them to come." Customers cheer and laugh as their wooden stools are knocked over by the water that breaches the restaurant. It holds two sittings each day for diners to enjoy the experience when the water levels are highest. "It's a fun challenge - you don't know if you'll get washed away somewhere while eating," joked customer Jetdanai Boonrod, 30. 7. BANGKOK, Oct 6 (TNA) – The management of Don Mueang airport is closely monitoring water situations and is ready to prevent flooding at the airport, said its general manager Thanee Chuangchoo. He said that the airport’s drainage system could handle up to 80 millimeters of rainwater in the first hour of rain and there were also three ponds that could additionally hold 1 million cubic meters of water. Besides, there were pumps to drain water from the airport compound directly to the Prem Prachakorn Canal. To block water from its vicinity, Don Mueang airport had embankments surrounding its perimeter and its gates on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road would be closed when flooding happened outside, Mr. Thanee said. Rumors that Chatchai Phromlert was poised to enter politics were circulating long before his mandatory retirement as Interior Ministry permanent secretary last week. New party in the making? On his final day in office last Thursday (September 30), Chatchai dismissed reports that he was involved in a party being formed to back General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s bid for another term as prime minister. 10. Picture: Sanook Sanook reporters went to a block of flats opposite Central Plaza in Chonburi in eastern Thailand after someone posted online about a woman leaving a flat in a dirty state owing three months rent. In the second floor room there was rotting food everywhere, plenty of sanitary napkins casually discarded and trash of all descriptions. There was even moss or lichen growing in the bathroom that had never been cleaner. Owner of the three story block of flats Kanjana Songphaiboon, 57, said she didn't know who had made the social media post but it was all true. She said that the renter was a very beautiful 22 year old Thai woman who dressed well and worked at a restaurant before the pandemic caused her to have to work in a factory. But she got into financial difficulty and left owing 3 months rent. The owner contacted her and she claimed she was looking after her sick mum, but she never came back. She had rented for 2 years. Kanjana said the 2,000 baht rent and 1,000 deposit was not enough. She had to pay 2,000 baht to have the place cleaned and now faces further bills to have it repaired. Sanook called the unnamed renter "suay tae sokmok" - beautiful but filthy. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2021-10-07 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

Police however doubt this because of the extent of the victim's injuries. She is being examined at the Police Hospital and the case is now being handled by the Klong Tan police. 16. By Nop Meechukhun National – The Medical Association of Thailand today, October 6th, has submitted an opposition letter to the Thai Prime Minister regarding the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister’s statement yesterday of planning to legalize e-cigarettes in Thailand. Dr. Amorn Leelarasamee, as the President of the Medical Association of Thailand, along with representatives from the Medical Royal Colleges, the National Alliance for Tabacco Free Thailand, and Thai Health Professionals Alliance Against Tobacco, has delivered an open letter to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha to oppose DES Minister Chaiwut Thanakhamanusorn’s proposal of the legalization of electronic cigarettes. The response followed yesterday’s public statement by Chaiwut himself that he wanted to make e-cigarettes and vaping legal as he believed it could reduce the health risk among smokers. Dr. Amorn told the Associated Press that the e-cigarette was originally produced to replace the traditional cigarettes’ market. Several international pieces of research have also mutually proved that e-cigs are clearly damaging individual health. 17. FILE PHOTO: A worker sanitises a sign at the International arrivals area of Terminal 5 in London's Heathrow Airport, Britain, August 2, 2021. REUTERS/Peter Nicholls LONDON (Reuters) - Britain dropped its advice against all but essential travel for 32 countries and territories on Wednesday as it continued to simplify its coronavirus travel regime after progress in fighting COVID-19 across the world. The change will allow people to travel more easily to destinations such as Algeria, Malaysia and Senegal as many travel insurance firms exclude cover for places where the government advises against travel, the foreign ministry said. Britain recently replaced its so-called traffic light system with a single red list and has reduced testing requirements for fully vaccinated travellers. The government is still advising against all but essential travel for scores of countries and territories on its red list which include Brazil, Mexico, South Africa and Thailand. "We're striking the right balance between keeping people safe which remains our priority and giving them the freedom to exercise personal responsibility, while supporting the travel sector," foreign minister Liz Truss said. The companies are seeking approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for emergency use. Citing information from the Rural Doctor Society, Dr. Rachada said the orally-administered drug was developed from medicine used to treat flu, after studies showed that it is efficacious in inhibiting several types of coronavirus, including COVID-19, adding that the medicine is Third Phase human trials in the United States. 19. Picture: Sanook Further lurid details have emerged in the case of Rudolf J.R. , 63, the Swiss pensioner who attacked and killed an intruder at his home who was armed with a gun. He fought with Sathian, 53, got the gun and knocked him unconscious then tied him up. But Sathian died in a kitchen behind the Swiss man's house. It was originally thought that the motive was robbery but this has now been dismissed as nonsense by relatives of the deceased. He had been having a sexual relationship with the Swiss man's wife for years and was in fact loaded with cash after she gave him money and he sold land. In earlier reports the wife had admitted to knowing Sathian and drinking with him but said they were just friends. Sanook went to Udon to get the latest and published two stories. In the first they reported that Lak Sariroop, 44, had gone to the local police to bail out Rudolf for 300,000 baht. He faces a charge of assault causing death. Conditions of bail are that he stays in the area and doesn't try to flee abroad. Lak told the media she had had the monks round to the house to hold a ceremony to assuage bad karma as a person had died there. She said she had apologized to Sathian's family but said that she was drunk and asleep when the incident happened. When she woke up she thought he was just unconscious. Reporters went to Phen where the cremation was being held and spoke to his mother Khan, 74, who said that all the locals and relatives knew that the "mia farang" (foreigner's wife) was carrying on with her son behind his back. It had been going on for 2 - 3 years. Three or four times he had brought her to her house to pay her respects and they had slept togther in a shack in the fields. She claimed he had already got 40,000 baht from her and didn't go to the house to rob the Swiss man but that she had phoned him up to get him to go over to see her. She wanted the news corrected denying that her departed son was a thief. An uncle of the victim called Thaworn, 65, said that Sathian had a wife and children and had split up with his wife because of the farang's wife. He described Sathian as a playboy. He bought the gun second hand a year ago and had just sold two rai of land for 500,000 baht and had no need of money. In the other article Sanook spoke to the ex wife of Sathian called Noothian who came from Chiang Rai to attend the cremation. She said she had been married to Sathian for 30 years and they had two children and had lived very happily. Until a few years ago when he struck up a relationship with the Swiss man's wife. She said that he had asked "Can I have you both? She said "no, you have to choose". He chose the "mia farang". She finally had enough in February of this year and moved away. She reiterated that there was no way this was an attempt to steal. She said that her ex had 290,000 baht in cash on his person after the sale of one rai of land to a relative. She claimed that money was now missing. Sanook then headed for the foreigner's house where he was walking outside. He waved the reporters away and scurried inside refusing to talk. On Monday suspecting that the latest revelations were in fact the case ASEAN NOW had attempted to contact the wife of the Swiss man online but had received no answer. What is believed to be her Facebook page has a happy picture of him and her in hammocks though posts are infrequent and there is no mention of him. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2021-10-06 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates
  20. Picture: INN INN reported that an online Twitter Space conference call was made between desperate mahouts nationwide and Pheu Thai party representatives yesterday. Deputy spokesman Chanin Rungthanakiat and Surin MP Khunnakorn Preechachanachai heard their grievances via a page called "unemployed elephants". Elephant camps nationwide have suffered greatly from the government's closure orders on tourism during the pandemic. Only skeleton staff remained at some camps to take care of the pachyderms over most of the last two years. But they and their charges are on their last legs and need help from the government with benefit payments to each elephant in order to survive. The elephants and their masters have tried all sorts to raise funds including online appearances on platforms like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. But donations are drying up as members of the public have little money left for their cause. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2021-10-06 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates
  21. Picture: Daily News A mother and father went to seek the help of Paveena Hongsakul at the foundation that bears her name yesterday, reported Daily News. Wirachai and Nataya's 2 year old daughter Nong Pleng had been attacked at a cement factory camp by a mongrel dog. Wirachai said that his wife was out at work and he was at the Bang Khen, Bangkok, camp with his daughter. While he was taking a shower he heard her scream and she was being attacked in the head. He managed to chase the dog away. She needed emergency surgery to repair tear ducts in her left eye with silicone implants and will be unable to open her eye. He said that other workers at the camp had had their children bitten many times and were afraid to let them out. The son of the owner of the dog - who appears to have left it there for years while he works at another of the companies camps - arrived to give the little girl a paltry 500 baht. The owner refused to accept any responsibility saying the dog was not his problem after leaving it there for 5-6 years. Paveena has contacted the local police and other officials to get the dog removed and relocated to somewhere more appropriate. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2021-10-06 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

  23. Senior minister wants to see E-cigarettes legalized in Thailand Picture: Thai Rath E-cigarettes could become legal in Thailand if a senior cabinet minster gets his way. Digital Economy and Society minister Chaiwut Thanakhamanusorn said Thais need to move with the times and modern technology. He said that 67 countries around the world had accepted electronic cigarettes. Some of them are big ones like the US and China. Even Malaysia allows them, reported Thai Rath. The minister said that the devices have far fewer harmful effects than regular cigarettes and can be a useful tool in getting people off them. He pointed out that campaigns in Thailand to get people to quit were having a limited effect - 10 million still lit up. E-cigarettes could help people who can't quit because they are less harmful. He plans to look at aspects of the law to see why Thailand forbids them. ASEAN NOW notes that the sale of E-cigarettes is quite open in Thailand even though they are illegal. However, from time to time there are crackdowns on vendors and jail terms await those who sell them Importers could be jailed for up to 5 years. Though it is unlikely individual users would be arrested many people have pointed to Thailand lagging behind the rest of the world on the matter. Countries like the UK have embraced the devices with vaping shops in many high streets now a common aspect of daily life. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2021-10-06 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates
