Apparently I am, in the eyes of many expats and nearly all Thais.

I work hard and make pretty good money but their are still some who belive I actually am made of the stuff. How dare I complain about scams and petty thievery?

Maybe I'm not a quality expat? I bet a quality expat just like a quality tourist bends over and takes it up the *&^% without ever questioning why it is so painful.

I shall now endevour to never complain about:

Rediculous transportation prices.

If I hear, "Hey you go 5 meters 100 baht." I will gladley pay. Heck there are no taxis at the bottom of the ocean and if their were imagine the price and I bet they don't use meters either!

Bait and switch:

"Oh that price ummm that price is only for ginger lads on Tuesdays."

Far be it for me to argue just because it is listed or written down doesn't make it the gospal right?

Out right theivery:

"oh me solly 25 baht plus, 50 baht, plus 20 baht not equal 350 baht?" "So, solly misteak."

I really do like to live here some things about LOS are truely great but I need to get over the fact that there maybe some complaints. From now on if I don't like every filthy wart and pus oozing sore I vow to get a plane ticket and leave!

After all I checked again and lucky for me I'm made out of money. Phew I thought my skin was just dry.

JR Texas: This sort of petty theft bugs me.......it seems to be a well-established game in Thailand.

A Thai just came into my office and told me, "Thais think all farangs are rich."

Maybe it is a cultural thing.....they think we are all rich so cheating us is OK. Of course, to them it is not cheating and probably has something to do with perceived "fairness."

So farangs and Thais are on opposite sides of a cultural (ethical/moral) fence with regard to this issue.

For the record, I think the worst cheats are the tuk tuk and taxi drivers.

How dare you! Tuk Tuk's and Taxi drivers are the most wonderful people on Earth! Mother Theresa herself came to Thailand oh so many years ago just to learn about being charitable from theese gental souls.

If your lazy,fat,pasty white butt wasn't so stingy you would give and give some more until you bleed! Yes, I said bleed don't you know that Buddha declared Tuk Tuk drivers at a higher plane than Nirvanna(the place not the band). It is for them and only them to decide what you should pay and no matter how much they ask you should pay it happily!

To the OP. Come on. Get serious. What is your objection exactly. The price of a cinema ticket rises 10 baht and you're up in arms about it? It's been 120 baht since I've been in Thailand (nearly three years) so a small increase is more than justified.

As for it not being communicated in advance, what nonsense. Do bars send out fliers advising when a beer goes up? Do supermarkets put every single price rise on their website, so punters are fully informed?

Yeah I agree! Like in the Menu post prices that are listed are ONLY a suggestion the real price is at the whim of the establishment. They only post the prices to get you into the venue and then and only then can you be privy to the real information.

Come on what's wrong with you people you act like a few baht over the price that is listed is gonna kill you. This is Thailand for God's sake and you should be darn happy to be here now everyone say it,"One, two, three! "If you don't like it go home!"

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I don't believe a price on a menu, or even a price tag, advert or display, is any form of contract at all, implied or otherwise. It is merely an invitation to trade and the shop keeper or, in this case restauranteur, is free to ask any price they like for the goods at the point of sale.

I agree like Traffic laws and the illegality of prostitution it is only a suggestion and not the reality.

Why no exercise?

There are more then enough studies that say thin is great but without exercise your only halfway healthy. Don't forget we also lose muscle mass as we age so your metabolic rate drops because of the loose of lean tissue. You can be thin and still have a host of health problems.

It's my opinion that your dieting to be healthy and maybe look and feel better why not go the whole nine and exercise as well?

My Fiance wants a dog real bad. I say we should get a cat but she just doesn't like them and she says she will not live with them. We live in a one bedroom apartment that is quite large and has a nice little garden in the back.

I have a few concerns about getting a pet. Number one this is Thailand and I dont feel it is the most secure place. The last coup was non violent but maybe the next won't be and we need to vacate quick? Number two is we do have nieghbors and I don't want barking of any kind to annoy them.

What are the best small breeds that do not bark or are least prone to bark?

I spoke to Nov.rain and may be a foster "parent".

I have read all your posts and never have I agreed with so many posters, even the posters that disagreed with eachother.

I think one only has to look at the bigger picture of what has happened and is currently happening in Thailand right now to see the wisdom of the authors words.

There are a million examples of Thais being incredibly selfless and giving but look at current business and political situations. I think the author has a great point seems to me that Thais will cut of their noses to spite their faces no matter how bad it maybe for their country men. Thailand is very typical of a Third World Country there is incredible wealth here and enormous potential but as it is held by a very selfish few the country suffers.

I also think the everyday actions of the general populace support the authors point. How many times does a Thai hurry up to get in front of you on the sidewalk,in a store, or else where only to slow down as soon as they pass you? I hate that!

I hope for the OP there were other customers in this place. If I had witnessed what happened to you I would have told the guy he not only lost you as a cutomer but myself as well.

I am in the service business and NO the cutomer is not ALWAYS right but you have to have some level of diplomacy. What is one beer for repeat business? Why cause a scene in your own place of business?

Like others said he probley is a first timer and has no real clue how to treat people.

I don't go to Pattaya much nor do I eat Fish and Chips but my GF does and if she were to suggest that place I would have to say no.

My GF,who is Korean, says that the Korean people here say that the food is not very good nor authentic. The name is Pyung Yang Kwan they also have one in Pattaya. It is advertised in the Korean magazines.

How do making things more expensive increase the quality of the experience? If Khoa San becomes to expensive then the younger people go elsewhere say Goa.

If this happens they may be less likley to return(because they never came) so they will not asociate Thailand with a positive experiense. When theese people have more disposable income they may spend it else where.

Thailand should concern itself with being a quality tourist destination regardless of price.

People will spend more when they feel comfortable and safe.

I actually think that the current increase in violence, agression to outside investment, anti-western sentiment will only result in the type of tourist they don't want.

D you really think a hard core sex-tourist care two wits about economic stability, violence, or service. They(sex tourist) come for only one reason and Thailand has an abundance of this (uh hmm women)Thailand could do with a lot more improvement in the latter.

Thailand has every right to aim for better quality tourists.

I have the feeling Thailand has achieved a lot over the years.

Just look at the upgrading of Khao San Road. It's become more expensive to get a room there.

The guesthouses look much better and have better services. Even my old fooks loved it!

Ahhh yes, quality and money do go hand and hand.

I guess all those quality tourist I see at the Marriot screaming at the top of thier lungs to the frightend Thai girls are indeed quality. They did spend a lot of money they must be aces.

I would guess that poor young backpackers should look else where to start thier world escursions. None of them come back with fond memories and a larger bank account do they?

I will be the first on the forum to appologize to YOU. For someone to say that you might have been drunk is absolutly rediculous.

As often as I see Thai police or officials in uniform having a sit down to a few glasses of whiskey I would say that there would be a good case for the immigration guy being drunk.

PS I dont know Peter but I think it is really poor taste to accuse or harrass anyone who post a very typical story of offical abuse in a THIRD WORLD country.

Well in light of this information I think the answer to better serve "Quality Tourist" would be to build a lot more western style mega/luxury malls like Paragon.

Nothing sells exotic asia like BMW and Hogen Daz outlets.
